My Goodwill informed me that not only everything donated gets sent for processing to see if it is a high value item to be put up for auction but also starting JANUARY 7th there will be no more discounts on any items . They will now only give $5.00 off of every $30.00 you spend but you will have to spend $30.00 in one pop to get the discount. So now I do not think I will find any deals at the Goodwill in the near future.

at the Goodwill at my area, one of the manager has been asking the customers if they are resellers and where do they sell and what platforms. Some kids are very proud and tell her where they sell but I don't. She doesn't need to know what I do. She even ask if she can see thier profile. So i know that they check comps on different platforms and base their price there. She even told me I dressed like a reseller. I was like how do resellers dressed???!!

I’ve been a reseller for 20 years. Years ago I was getting ridiculously cheap prices for high end items. Now pretty much all thrift stores look up prices and charge way too much for these items. Many times using listed prices and not solds! 🤦‍♂️

I volunteer at a thrift store where I live and sells our stuff very cheap. Shirts are like 2 bucks. A lot of stuff is only 1 dollar and what furniture we do have is like 5 bucks. We are non profit and all workers are volunteers. Money taken in goes to local high schools for scholarships. We are a very small thrift store and I love working there and seeing the happy faces when we tell them the price at checkout.

Pretty much everything you guys stated about why prices at thrift stores are higher are correct. People now know how to look things up. Just about everyone. So whether they resell at at thrift shop or sell at a garage sale people are always trying to make money. Just like eBayers. Prices go up and unfortunately this era we live in is outrageous in inflation. I worked for goodwill for 4 years. And they were constantly on us about pricing and getting more product out. The managers had to meet a budget and quota each month or quarter and they applied pressure to us just like corporate did to them. It’s ran like any other business. More money!!! So I get it. Some prices are outrageous.

Someone I know is married to a higher up at GW. The managers get to set their own prices and policies; I have about 7 GW's I visit on rotation and they have wildly different prices on brands that are 'popular'. Some I go to will price at the register whatever they feel like if there isn't a price tag, some will go to the back and create a tag, some will give it to me because they can't be bothered. I think prices have gone up for all the reasons you mentioned.

Upper management said to keep testing the price point things sell ,meaning keep raising it as long as sales are not dropping because it is all about profits for each store. But since the average store manager complained about having to price all the donations and how it is time consuming for the employees. Upper management came up with the idea to send all items to the main store to be priced and they will send back even amounts of merchandise to each store to be fair. Ya right fair is bologna, what I think they are doing is to see which stores can sell all junk and make a profit. Or they want to see which stores have the lowest sales with what they send to maybe close down some of the less profitable stores.

I think it is important to remember that not all thrift store shoppers are resellers. Many, especially teens and college kids, would consider $9 bucks for a shirt is still better than paying full price for something they want. I often look at an item and think that's a great deal/fair price if I were not trying to flip it for profit. Sure there is greed and testing price tolerance is a fact (my favorite thrift just raised all long sleeve women's tops from 7 to 9 bucks and the rack is no less empty so they might be onto something). Yes, thrift stores have gotten more savvy about the resale market (betting that Coogi sweater is priced that way because there was a recent RUclips clip by someone who sold one for about that price). And, the fact that Goodwill's online site this year will be reporting record profits (they will have brought in more than 2BN USD in just under ten years) encourages them to see how elastic the market really is. While resellers who make and market content certainly do give them helpful insights, the resale market is expected to reach $258.8 billion by 2027. I think a few dozen RUclips stars don't really have that much influence. My guess is this will level off at some point. (My biggest complaint is how Goodwill pulls everything that is any good and puts it online. So annoying.)

    • @dolfinwriter5389
      @dolfinwriter5389 Год назад +6

@gritandglam1815 - For that matter, once upon a time NO thrift store shoppers were resellers! I would point out though, that most resellers who shop thrift stores also do not resell everything that they BUY at thrift stores. We moved halfway across the country and shopped thrift stores to replace many things that we left in California rather than move them. I am a very hetero man, very pro 2nd Amendment and career Navy veteran, now married 27 years (I think most people will understand why I belabor this!) Over the years I've gotten many compliments on shirts that I bought for myself at thrift stores--more so than NEW shirts bought retail. I find clothes for my wife and over the years for our two boys as they have grown. Most of the Corelle dishes we use ourselves I bought at thrift stores.
I understand that the influence of RUclipsrs who are resellers may cause them to boost prices, and especially in an economy of rising inflation where EVERYTHING is going up we should expect to see prices go up. But only to a point!
Why do they call themselves "Thrift" stores if they are going to price things at full retail? Many times I even see things priced HIGHER than new full retail. That's completely ridiculous, and they won't even discuss it "That's done at HQ and that's just our policy." Good luck selling that!

I am always so envious when I watch these videos to find the brands and the prices that those of you in other states pay. I live in central California on the coast and a Patagonia jacket would be about 50 or $60 at Goodwill. Each garment and each pair of shoes is marked separately. Shoes basically don’t even start until 25 or $30 and up. The jeans if they’re anything decent usually start over 20 etc. I think you get my drift. It’s just frustrating seeing that in some states it’s so easy.

What I don't like is when I go to garage and yard sales, is if and when the sellers gets wind that I buy and sell on eBay the charge me more(not all the time but on many occasions). I was at one and asked the price and I just couldn't buy and make a profit so put it down. As I am walking away another lady asked how much and was told way under what I was asked to pay. I turned and confronted the seller about what she did and her excuse was " because you sell on eBay and are going to make money off of it and not buying for yourself" WOW

And it’s impossible for them to research everything that gets donated.
You simply have to know more than they do. I know a lot of obscure Woman’s brands/designers…boutique clothing.
These items slips through and get priced under $10 (usually).
It’s way more challenging and more work (to find good stuff that’s not priced up) compared to 10+ years ago.

At the end of the day- it also depends who is pricing at the time it comes on the floor. Everyone thinks they know what something is going to sell for. They forget (or don’t know how) to look at the sell through rate. None of us are experts, but I feel like, at least where we are, thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales are beyond crazy priced. I’m not buying something for double or triple what I can get for it selling online. I always want to say are you going to do the work, in research, cleaning, storing, testing, taxes, possible returns, shipping supplies, etc- if not, then don’t ask the stupid price you’re asking. Until they do what we do, they will literally never understand just how hard we actually work.

We ha be some goodwills that had started pricing stuff up and their sales tanked to the point that their stores were empty more often than not. I had not visited either store for a few years because the prices were insanely high. I went back a week ago and the prices had come down to a more normal level, they started sizing the clothing racks instead of the useless rainbow effect many stores have and there were actually some decent items to buy. Not spectacular, but good bread and butter pieces. They got their financial a$$ handed to them because the shoppers took their dollars elsewhere.

Good will always mentions labor costs for raising their prices, think about how much labor it takes to research and individually tag every item of clothing, make let’s say all t shirts $1 each, you’ll sell through all of them pretty much at 100%, they then cut labor, materials, storage and shipping costs easily in half….
I’d rather sell 100 $1 shirts than 3 $15 shirts, especially if my cog is free

I think its fair to say thrift stores have more of a right to price accordingly since they do have employees, over head cost, other cost and usual donate to a cause. Some items are priced pretty crazy.

Goodwill has a lot of community assistance programs that cost more to operate for the same reason, but are good programs that are needed. As a society, we're just going to have to make adjustments according to our income for our households and deal with it. Sad, but true.

I actually just had a conversation yesterday with the store manager of a Goodwill Boutique about why the prices have skyrocketed and he said that they are required to put a certain amount of value on the floor each week and the amount was just raised so they had to raise the prices per item they put out because they only have room to put so many new items out. He never once mentioned they needed to meet a quota of sales in all the conversations I have had with him which I have found to be very odd because clearly if you are strapped for space to put new items out the old ones are selling... When I say they raised their prices men's dress shirts went from $9.99 ish to $16.99 and up for a USED walmart brand shirt... A Robert Graham for instance would be anywhere from $29.99 to $49.99. I have been shopping this particular store for over a year and it is very small in the Orlando area so I have become friendly with the staff.

The only gripe I have at both yard sales (estate sales), and thrift stores are the EBay print outs of listed , not sold price comps .
I think the high prices are really no different than a reseller buying it and asking top dollar . The only difference is thrift stores and yard sales do not understand sometimes that their biggest buyers are resellers and they can’t get that price from them. Maybe somebody would pay that but not in the thrift store ,they’ll pay it on eBay and so the stores are getting smarter and starting to do that more now too.
I don’t see it ever reversing, just getting worse. I know the Goodwill jewelry boxes I’ve been buying for a few years are a hit and miss right now. They can be total junk or you can get a couple things they missed and make back your box and up to $100 maybe even 200. But that is getting rarer and rarer . Used to be when we bought a mystery box of jewelry or watches we would find a lot of wonderful things to sell anywhere from 20 to 40 each and occasionally 100 or more. Now it’s getting harder as they are cherry picking out the better stuff now and we only get lucky if they miss something. I used to buy every single week now I buy occasionally. I don’t even even going to Goodwill’s because where we live they are tiny and there’s nothing good.

It's gotten so expensive for those wanting to spend under $20. People were shocked I bought one of the $5 chairs instead of waiting for price to lower. They brought out tons of single shoes. No matter how much we complain, we all have saved a lot of money on personal items even though some monitors and stereos didn't work, clothes that didn't fit or survive the wash had to be gotten rid of.

It pissed me off because the manager said resellers are living off goodwills and thrift store selling their items 10x more so that’s why the prices skyrocketed and I told him if that is the case sell it on line and I told him all these is donated instead of selling it cheap to make room for more free stuff you rather still have the items and not sell it because of the ridiculous prices. He said he didn’t care.

Hi. Here in the UK we are experiencing the same thing. Ours here are called "charity shops" its like part of what they earn goes to a charity. But the problem is these past years they have increased their prices, and some are based on ebay prices. we have to be picky about what we buy.

Hello Guys, re: price hikes, in the UK as you probably know we have smaller thrift stores (charity shops) prices have increased tremendously as they are checking their prices against ebay prices most have their own ebay store but some price like ebay asking prices not sold comps, plus now there are so many resellers including many young teenage high school kids who have the gamer knowledge .

    @amyadkins5380 Год назад +6

I think prices have gone up BECAUSE THEY CAN. Everyone has been effected by inflation so any thrift that is business minded (whether non profit or for profit) will find ways to maximize their revenue despite the rising costs of EVERYTHING. Also the general and increasing popularity of reselling is common knowledge. Employees of thrifts are just trying to do their best to keep up with it and get their piece of the pie. I don't think it's any one single factor that's caused this.

Here in the UK we have, mostly, smaller charity shops. The prices there have really risen over the past year or so. We do have resellers but I wouldn’t have thought enough to affect prices! I find Primark items priced at more than the retail price. I think that here it is greed. Items are donated! There are areas in the country where charity shops are well priced and their turnover is way higher!!!

I think the reason for higher prices is the true local charity stores have greater demand and need to generate more $$ to meet their programs and services. I never stop at Goodwill, crazy is the understatement.

My biggest gripe is the stuff they keep behind the register desk. Goodwill and arc. It’s hard to shop for those things and they tend to be good stuff. Seems like the employees keep it back there because they want it but it “needs” to be on the floor first. Oh they are expensive they have said. Gimme a break lol

yes the thrift stores have gotten greedy and are pushing to see what a threshold is for many items. another factor not considered, is wages keep going up. minimum wage in new york is 14.20 and due to go up again.

Goodwills are definitely not passing on any goodwill. They are getting too greedy and pocketing the profits whilst not paying for any of their merchandise like a regular retail store. Goodwill needs to come back down to earth. Goodwill is supposed to be a non profit who helps employ people needing work like the disabled. I think they need to get investigated and audited. 75% roughly is supposed to go to social causes to be exempt from taxes and to be non-profit. 🤔

My honey hole is a for profit. They give out coupons for 75% on Sundays and have great sales during the week. My average cost of goods is $3-$4. They know that a lot of resellers shop there and they are very kind to all of us. There is so much merchandise cycling through that there are always cool finds. If they ever close, we'll be sooooo sad!! Also I don't begrudge when prices go up. Every business, for profit or not, is in it to make money. Just means we have to find deals that work for us. No one is beholden to me nor I to them. Like you guys, I still shop at those places, too, just have to be more choosy about what I buy. Great discussion!

I wouldn’t think good will or any other thrift stores have time to check RUclips videos. I mean really, that would be a lot of money wasted paying someone to watch RUclips!
My guess would be inflation has taken a hold of everything, but I know good will are making more money than any other thrift store. They are very greedy and know how to keep things unusually high.
Good luck with whatever you and Ali decide. I kind of think good will needs a great awakening! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜

Better research tools for the stores on how to find high value items. They’re just doing the same research resellers are. Still finding the better deals at the bigger stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army. Mom and pop thrift stores are always priced much higher and I assume it’s because they are able to do research items more thoroughly than a bigger operation could

  • @neoanderson726

I think that is a complicated question and mutiple reasons: yt rellers might have let the cat out of the bag by sharing their knowledge and saying they can make a living out of reselling thrift stores finds ( I am skeptical about that personally) , so yeah thrift stores might think they should get more of the pie ( iMHO they get the best part they got the item f or free so anything they make is profit ..if they priced like a thrift store they would sell more and poor people will actually shop their stores again). Then you have people like myself who saw teh vids and went wait what my old stuff is worth money so instead of donating I am now selling my stuff myself therefore thrifts might not be getting as much stuff like they use to so they feel the need to up the prices on the items they do get. Gas is expensive do I really want to spend gas to go to the thrift store to donate my item and lose more money or do I sell teh item and make some money back. Then you have resellers who do not charge a lot for their items undervaluving it then everyone starts to think lily pulitizer is only worth 20 dollars ( no wonder why brands hate to see their items on teh secondary market) . Then you have flooding the market with items because a YT reseller it is worth money ... then before when you had maybe 5 come on teh market for sale per year now you have 100's and well supply and demand ... more items available lowers the value of an item ... see long and complicated answer . If I ever opened a thrift store I would just let everything go for a dollar and get things in and out ,,, no need for pricing things, no pricing guns, no tags, no sale promotions, no bins stores, less trash ... I got it for free let it go a dollar no matter what it was ...
