I live in West Virginia and I can't wait for it to be available here. As of a test taken right now, I am getting 0.8 mb/s download and 0.2 mb/s upload. So as you can see, the, under expectation, speeds for Starlink, are over 200x my internet. Also we are currently paying $250 / month for our internet (Viasat). Its the best plan we can get in our area. I'm so exited for the opportunity of Starlink and have been, and will continue to watch every one of your videos. Thanks for all the information!
I'm in West Virginia too, and running an online digital business has been unreal with satnet, can't wait for this.

Another "beta-tester-in-waiting" following the Canadian regulatory process from here in rural BC. I'll note that Starlink pricing and speeds really hit the sweet spot for us! A number of us here in the community are doing what we can to advocate for Starlink's spectrum access so that we can finally get high-speed, reliable Internet service to more competitively operate our small businesses and just generally be connected with friends and family. Thanks for the excellent updates, Mike - you provide a very valuable information aggregation service on this front!
Thanks Mike this is very useful because I’m in Michigan and my internet is only 8mbs. This will be game changer for people like me who can finally watch movies at max quality and have no issues.
I check my email every single day multiple times a day just praying there is something from starlink
YEAH!! Now to wait for other regulatory issues to be approved in Canada. Let's hope it gets approved before end of the year.
Thanks for your update. I'm sure your happy its officially live and on it's way to Canada soon.
It just got approved by the CRTC in October.
@@crenaud590 I'm aware but hopeful it will begin sometime in early 2021.
Exciting stuff!
I have been following what Starlink has been doing from when I first heard about it! I live in North Eastern Ontario, here my only option for internet is Cellular (which I have) or xplornet.
$99 plus Canadian dollar conversion and taxes for starlink is still cheaper than what I am paying now for a capped 100 gig data plan. People have no idea how badly rural customers are ripped off for internet. I would be very happy to receive an email to be a beta tester, cash on hand and ready to go!!
@@tripplefives1402 what provider is that with?
I have checked all carriers available in Michigan and they all have caps in you dig deep! I just moved full time off grid and run a low voltage installation company. My wife and I almost never make it past the middle of the month then 10-15 minutes to download an email. I have Verizon and the argue with me that I have “commercial true unlimited “! But I have exceeded 22g of data so I just don’t have excess to high speed data!🤦🏻♂️
Damn right! I'm getting ripped off every day by my carrier here in Alaska, GCI. I'm going to drop them like a hot potato the second I get the email!
The man of the century !
You're like the Bob Ross of Starlink information!
Awesome to hear! Very exciting
Awesome.!
We live on a remote off-the-grid ranch in Central Idaho around the 45th parallel which should fall in line with the current beta coverage area but no invite yet. I currently pay much more to Hughesnet Satellite than $99 a month plus we have a 50gb monthly cap, they don't shut you off completly but dial you down to around 1-3 mbps until you either pay for additional gb at a tune of $3 per gb or wait until your next month allotment starts... If Starlink doesn't have a cap and have speeds of up to 150mbps that is Huge... Hoping we still might get an invite to the public beta... time will tell, if not we'll just wait it out until the regular service is available.Thank you for all of your diligent research and keeping us up to date.
You are a legend
I can’t wait for this to be available in Mississippi. Fiber all around but my little town is stuck with 10mbps down 2 up DSL. Looking forward to signing up as soon as I can

@MikeOnSpace there is no regulations on running Ethernet outside your home or a building in Canada, nor will there ever be. But if you want to run it I would recommend running CAT6A SSTP outdoor cable, it is packed with gel to deal with the harsh cold winters in Canada.
Good overview and take on it. I am hopeful. Any idea if they have RV mounting?
$99 a month is less then I pay for my current satellite internet service I will jump on it as soon as I can.
im guessing they will set the price to limit the user base
Yea but the satellite is for 500. This shit is for people that live in the woods or mountains in the middle of nowhere

All I want for Christmas is starlink
I'm old enough to remember when the small satellite for tv dishes first came out. They also had an upfront cost around $500 in 1990's money to buy the dish. Now its worked into the monthly cost / a contract much like a cell phone device can be financed as part of the month service fee. Paying one flat price up front is probably better long term but its a big commitment like a contract. With shipping and tax at $25 a month would pay off in 2 years so if you look at it that way its $125 a month for 24 months than $100 a month after that.
can't wait , mike
No invite yet, hoping to see it shortly!
That is roughly a third of what I'm paying monthly and around the same that I paid for installation. I can't wait for this to be available in Canada. I'm making sure to email my MP, Minister Bains, and a few others in Parliament to let them know that us rural Canadians want / need this service.
I'd like to try, but that'd be against regulations for Starlink. We'd be getting assigned IPs that would be american. As they are touting Starlink something that can be used on vehicles, more than likely truckers will be using it and they'll be using it in Canada as well. Which means there'd have to be ground stations built in Canada. Just a matter of time before Starlink gets a Canadian spectrum license.
But I am looking to see if anybody tries it. /r/starlink is getting more and more beta testers posting.
@@tripplefives1402 You sure? I thought that american companies had to have a license to operate in Canada? If Starlink is going to connect to the Canadian backbone to serve Canadians, I think they do need to have a spectrum license. Me personally, I wouldn't need one to connect to starlink, but for them to offer the same service in Canada, I think we'd need groundstations across Canada. Otherwise, it'd be like when xplornet oversells a tower. I think, I don't know. All I know is I keep emailing our MPs to let them know rural Canadians are waiting for that spectrum license for Starlink.
@@tripplefives1402 Huh. Wonder why starlink isn't signing up Canadians then. Like, I'm on the list for Canadians waiting for the service, but everybody is saying that Starlink does have the BITS license, the spectrum license is needed from ISED to offer the service to Canadians.
Which is why I keep checking this everyday hoping to see TIBRO or Starlink satellite showing up.

Not knowing much about this but with some satellites the angle of the dish may be different for different places. That may be why there is the thing about if it is installed at th shipping address.

How did you get on this? I got in there mail list a while back and never was selected.... Anything special you need to do to get their attention?

Great site Mike! I live in Virginia, USA. I did sign up to be a beta tester if available. Do you have any idea when the Virginia area will be available?

I WOULD OF BEEN HAPPY WITH 25mbps!! unfortunately I don’t live in northern us of lower Canada so maybe you can make a video on your predictions about when and how long it might take for them to get this to the rest of the USA... You’re definitely my favorite mike amazing video once again!!!
Those of you who think that the price is too expensive need to look at what is being offered. I have an IT company here in Oklahoma, and I tell you that when Starlink goes fully online, it will be the Holy Grail of internet service anywhere outside of a city limits. Large portions of this state are ONLY covered by conventional satellite, cellular, and believe it or not..... DIAL UP!!!
Conventional satellite internet has two MAJOR problems. First, it has absolutely HORRIBLE latency. Those satellites are in geosynchronous orbit , which is 22 thousand miles into space. At that distance, the speed of light becomes a major factor. Say you type in a search to google, and hit enter. The signal has to travel 22 thousand miles out into space, relay off of the satellite, go back to earth and be routed to Google's server. After that, the returning data has to travel the same path back to your computer. That's 88 THOUSAND miles, or almost half a second at the speed of light. Fast paced online gaming is basically impossible, as is Voice Over IP phone service. And, just regular online browsing lags noticeably. The second issue is that almost all current satellite internet has some kind of data cap. When you hit your daily cap, either the speed is throttled WAY back, or you just lose connection. That makes it pretty unusable for businesses that use the internet a lot during the day.
For cellular and point to point wireless, it's all about the distance between you and the nearest tower that your ISP uses. And usually cellular plans have a cap as well.
Which is why there are still a LOT of rural people and businesses here in Oklahoma that still use DIAL UP! Starlink is going to change the world for many people!
Still waiting in rural north central PA. I sent in my address a couple of months ago, but have heard nothing from Starlink since they requested the full address in addition to the ZIP code.
excellent video. Dat terms of service tho O.O
Will (heavy) rain be a problem for the starlink receiver? i had a sattelite receiver for tv but when it started raining it lost connection.
Or snow?
I mean they obviously have accounted for that
I was hoping to make the beta but looked at the map and realized that Massachusetts is actually not high enough latitude for it.
So what determines who gets the public beta? I live in Central Wisconsin and I havnt gotten anything. :(
It's likely locations, if your address is too far north or too far south the inclination of the orbits won't be ideal to provide you service, since the constellation is incomplete (this is part of the reason they're saying that periodic outages are likely as there may be times with no satellite will be in range).
It could be that there is a waiting list, of sorts, and they are going to slowly ramp up bandwidth usage in areas. Which means a neighbor of yours might get it and you'll have to wait until they get some results from that user before trying to add to the usage. It could also mean they offered it to a neighbor (relatively btw not necessarily your neighbor) and they're waiting to see if they order the service.
It could also be an inundation of the order service. Since they aren't exactly set up as a proper service provider they're just trying to... queue it's invitation emails so they don't have thousands of people ordering service at once.
I know of a Starlink install that is in Nebraska that is still getting 100 mb/s on their downloads.
Wow! Excited on this idol. Thanks for sharing. Go with KaMOVES into one place in China. Shoutout! #MOVEONTV
How will snow covering the dish affect it? Will we need to go out and brush it off??
The dish from what ive seen (hoping i get it soon) is flat. And supposedly it has a sensor for snow and heats itself up to melt it which sounds really cool

Still waiting. Hope how soon it becomes available.
US Navy express interest in hooking their ships to a VPN portion of Starlink. You know many other country would also be interested in their Navy having good internet communication at sea.
I'm in Florida, one ISP where I live, data capped to 100 GB per month, $105 a month. Thieves. I get about 120 down and 5 up when I'm lucky.
I am in rural Ontario, Canada and I pay $89/mo ($100/mo after taxes) for 7Mbps download and 1Mbps upload and 400GB usage cap. And my ISP is one of the better ones. Most rural people are stuck with Xplornet, which has high latency, oversold towers and unhappy customers and they pay from $60 - $150/mo.
What about upload speeds and is that land based ?
Would be nice if they gave us a confirmation email when we applied for open beta. Will they be continuously adding more folks to open beta, or just a single group? I'm right on the U.S./Ca border in north central WA. No email yet . . .
If you mount it way up on the eve and it sits flat, what happens when it snows?
If the dish is covered with snow then it will block satellite connection. Hopefully this will trigger a satellite seeking mode that will tilt the dish to drop the snow. Also the dish is flat so unless the snow has frozen over it will drop when tilted.
Can one go mobile with the Starlink Dish?

Still waiting! But this is exciting news!!
Cant wait, but I have to think it'll be at least a year until it becomes available to TN/NC.
The price is a little higher than I expected, so I'll suffer with my current DSL until public beta users report on its functionality.
Monthly price is a bit higher than I anticipated and hardware is far more than I can afford right now. Looks like I have to suffer with slow internet as it is apparently all I can afford right now. I was really hoping this would be something most people could afford.
I would strike a deal with a neighbour and share internet wirelessly. Half the price is a good pricepoint. With free sight you can set up a fast 5GHz connection.
@@ericpiper9002 very high even $80 is high
This will never replace internet options in urban areas. Definitely has very different use cases and 99$ is dirt cheap compared to other space based internet while being a lot faster. I'm thinking this is really good for remote areas (RV owners might like this sort of thing when they are roaming around). I'm sure they'll make good offers for ocean liners and such as well.
Yeah, I don't know the prices for the USA, but here in Europe that price is really high, almost the double of some fiber connections.
did not see any canadian information do you have a zone or area ?

@@MikeOnSpace Still not yet??
Will the angle of the dish change as more satellite's are added? I used the Starlink app and I don't have a clear view of the northern horizon. I'm hoping the angle will increase above the horizon as more satellites are launched.
Question (with tongue firmly in cheek): When can we expect to see the first launches to place a Starlink constellation around Mars?
5-10yrs
they probably wont have any internet access on mars bc its so far away
it takes around 20 - 30 minutes for a signal to travel to from mars to earth and thats just when its close by
Already imagining the lag Mars colonists will be complaining about in Fortnite...
Fortnite players on mars will only play against other players on mars and I bet game servers will be up and running before colonists get there... video games are a great escape from the daily grind so I am sure Mr Musk will provide a hell of a lot more comfort and amenities than NASA could or would provide.
@@wamphry88 While I have no doubt that Elon Musk is well aware of gaming being an essential pastime to accommodate, especially social games. The point is server structure would be installed for any game, and... technically (but not actually) you could connect to players from another planet. Since he would likely try to expand the current internet framework from planet to planet I doubt it would _force_ local interaction. Game Servers, Streaming Services, and Book Sellers will likely all have servers to provide their content to Martian tourists.
Will this be able to be used by RV travel???
Here in the UK my present ISP offers 200 mB/s+ download speed for a little over £35 GBP. Starlink simply doesn't compete in my situation, however I could see that others here with no or little provision who are prepared to pay may well have interest.
I'm in Montana, received an invite yesterday. Unfortunately, I moved a couple miles away from where I originally signed up. I signed up for service anyways and sent a service request for a change of address.
StarLink got back to me almost immediately and terminated the service. They said my new address isn't compatible. Super disappointing, but it is what it is. Our best service option at the moment is 10mb/s on DSL. It's painful and I can't wait to get Starlink.
Where are you in Montana? I'm outside of Anaconda and within the target latitude range. Unfortunately, no invite yet...
@@richardpasha9332 I'm outside of Butte. We actually ended up getting an invitation for my girlfriend. She signed up at the new place a couple weeks ago and got an invitation a day after me.
I live in Oregon. Looks like from your map, I will not get invited.
I do wish it was 1/2 as expensive for monthly. Also most satellite deals have the equipment included in monthly or it is free but must be returned when ending service.
I think his map is just marking states where he has heard of confirmed users so far, not actually an official map from Starlink of areas they will service. He suggested that he will update his map as he hears reports from people in other states. I'm sure that not everybody is going to get into the public beta and Starlink is probably trying to select testers based on location to appropriately distribute load. I think last I saw, the word was that they are targeting 44N to 52N in Northern US and Southern Canada. Eugene, OR is 44N. If you're in Southern Oregon, you'll probably have to wait a bit longer.
@tiredlocke is correct - my map was just to show states where there is at least one confirmed beta user. It is based on the data being collected here: www.reddit.com/r/Starlink/comments/jj11v4/mods_could_we_get_a_stickied_post_for_confirmed/
You can see now that there is at least one person from Oregon now as well, but further north than your location.

@@MikeOnSpace I know of an install that's a few months old in the state of Nebraska. They are getting 100 mb/s and have the dish pointed very northerly.
Hey I know this is a rough question to answer but when do you predict we could see Starlink in southern Kentucky
this is hard to estimate, but there's already talk of Starlink offering services to a school district near the Texas Oklahoma border. If they can do that I see no reason it couldn't soon be available in Kentucky too. Maybe within a year.
I can also see a lot of NGO's getting them for villages with solar in areas that lack infrastructure. Also there is regulatory costs they must pay even if only one user. Those costs are fixed so more users price comes down a lot. Laser links mean less ground stations so less costs their. And finally as people like Azure and AWS connect their data centers directly to Starlink less costs to the backend internet provider. All this means more satellites, more people much lower costs. Also my cellphone company provides free wifi roaming calling . does this mean that if starlink terminals have a backend public connection i could possible have world wide starlink cellphone roaming
I’m waiting for the $50 price and I love out of my town so rural where I am still sucksss😭😂👍
Could you throw one of these on a RV or house boat? Back of a Cyber Truck ?
I have been looking forward to testing this. One question I have thought of recently is how snow in the dish will affect the service. Since it is rolling out as winter approaches in the northern lattitudes does anyone know an answer to this?
I suspect that snow blockage is one of the questions hopes to answer through the Beta testers. Beta means ' don't expect it to be good '.
No email yet but lets go
Waiting for the invite. I live in SW Washington state.
Does the Starlink HW hand out an IPv6 IP address? I'll have my own router and will translate to IPv4 behind it but am curious.
Curious if the $99 price is temporary. That's a lot in Canada, if they just do a straight conversion to $135 a month.
It's almost definitely temporary. When the service opens up and isn't a beta anymore, they'll have to compete with comcast/att/spectrum prices, which can be as low as 30 bucks in places where those providers have to compete with a local entity, and since I doubt they'll try to compete locally and will instead compete at least at a national level (ignoring state level taxes) at the international level you can almost guarantee that they'll compete "locally" due to the currency involved.
To put it simply their price for Canadians, should they ever start providing real service, would likely be $99 Canadian since they can probably get better regulatory expenses.
Keep in mind the $99 price tag is currently competing with Viacom like companies, which are currently charging 250 bucks a month to most customers.
@@SherrifOfNottingham why would they be competing with those? Elon Musk already said he's not competing with them, and this service is meant for people who don't have good internet access in the city. If you're int the city already there is no point in getting Starlink. Like I'm using cell phone tower internet at 150gb cap a month, and live 30 miles from any city. I get like 10 Mbps average.

Mike- would love to see a comparison between Starlink(at least what you know) and a 5g service from a cell provider. I live in central PA and have not been invited to public beta but have been exploring 5g via Verizon Wireless which will improve my internet greatly. It's not available yet in my area. Now that we know the cost of Starlink equipment and monthly, I suspect 5g could be considerably less expensive. Any thoughts?
