    Devo at their absolute peak, sounds beautiful. A band so ahead of their time it's not funny.

    My wife and I were at this concert. I still consider it the BEST concert we have ever seen. Their playing to the huge video screen was incredible ! They were so tight ! At one point mark mothersbaugh disappeared from the stage , a short time later a rope is lowered from the balcony right in front of us and down he comes!

    I was there at that gig. NOBODY knew what to make of the screen and the acting/playing in synch to the projection. They did something that was very far ahead of its time, as now we have the LED screens behind bands that are in synch via the tech we have now. These guys were definitely on to something (and on something too), but it took a very long time for the industry and tech to catch up with the idea.
    As usual with DEVO.

      LOTS AND LOTS of clove (and other herbs) smoke up in those high shitty seats at the Orpheum. The show and the smoke made for a great contact high for me and my brother. I was 16, he 14... and his friend from school. I think it was our first show away from the parents, either that one or the B-52's at the same venue ... I can't recall.,

      I was there also. I think this was there 3rd time at the Orpheum. I know the first one was 1979 and that concert was just CRAZY. The crowd was unbelievable. I knew they were going to do the projection thing because I'm a spud boy from way back. Later that year, I saw the B52s in the very first row and during Down Town one of the girls handed me the microphone. Say what?! Great show!

      @Metrohopper 7 лет назад +2

      Mark Mothersbaugh made it clear, once and for all and during the 3D show in Beverly Hills, how much he despised his mum - and he used not only swearing but some rather remarkable props. He never did it again, I understand, but I think there was something that was going on during that tour that was unlike any other. Perhaps the contractual obligations had begun to take their toll? Who knows?

    • @InfiniteRhombus
      @InfiniteRhombus 6 лет назад +4

      its known as the dirty version, theres a studio version of it somewhere but ive never heard it, i only know about it because on boojiboysbasement there are studio overdub cards and one is for the album version and another is explicitly marked keyboard overdubs for the "dirty version". though they could have been backing tracks for this version on the tour, who knows?

    i'm surprised how many songs gerald v actually sings. i've been a fan since nutra and i just always envisioned mark singing the songs when i heard them. probably because like every video has him doing the singing. except maybe "beautiful world". but even then, i was at this concert in san diego and gerald didn't sing that song, it was "boogie boy", which i found annoying.
    but anyway, like "time out for fun" is a gerald v song, yet mark is singing it during the concert. go figure.

    How come no stuff from New Traditionalists? I got that album when it came out in '82. I remember when they came to my city around that time - my "music class" teacher, when I was in 5th grade, actually went to that show.

    • @itachiman01
      @itachiman01  8 лет назад +1

      +Kent Manthie I'm not sure. I mean, every tour was really just in with the new and out with the old (excluding the oldies they played at just about every show afterwards).

    • @MrKmanthie
      @MrKmanthie 8 лет назад

      Ian Weil Yeah - I can understand that, but I thought New Traditionalists came out in '82, cuz I was in 5th grade when I got it, that is, unless NT came out in '81, because when I started 5th grade it was Sept '81. So, maybe by the time this show came around, they'd already put a new album out and a new tour (already, though? that soon) -are you sure it was 1982? Could it possibly have been in '83 instead? Just wondering. Thanks.

    • @itachiman01
      @itachiman01  8 лет назад +2

      +Kent Manthie No, New Traditionalists came out in August 1981, and the (US) tour ended in December (though they played some Australian shows in early '82). This is during their next tour, the Oh No! tour for their new album that was released in October 1982.

    • @MrKmanthie
      @MrKmanthie 8 лет назад

      Ian Weil Oh - OK, I see. That makes sense. Also, that was, like, 34-35 yrs ago too! So, it's hard to remember all the specifics!! Thanks, though.

  • @joeyday576
    @joeyday576 4 года назад +4

    Sounds like they are using a drum machine and sequenced synths for all the Oh-No material (Maybe even playing to instrumental studio tracks). The mix is too perfect. Notice when they play the older material, the drums and other instruments are not as tightly mixed. I believe this was around the time Alan (the drummer) started becoming disillusioned with the band. He was quoted as saying something to the effect of "I preferred it when we played like machines instead of having machines play the music."

    • @itachiman01
      @itachiman01  4 года назад +4

      Joey Day All the Oh No tracks have “backtracks” that they played too, which was also synced perfectly with the video. It contained drum set and synthesized sounds they couldn’t reproduce on stage, or if there weren’t enough members to produce it.

    • @joeyday576

    Still trying to figure out why DEVO got snubbed for the Hall Of Fame. Oh, I'm sure some of you will try to justify letting LL Cool J taking a spot away that clearly belonged to DEVO or Iron Maiden.......This is the deal. Rap is NOT rock. It was once barely adjacent to rock. But still, it's not rock. Now I know you are all champing at the bit to respond to this. You can take your pretenses about my character and make of it what you will. I don't care. This is why DEVO belongs and LL Cool J does not : Innovation. Experimentation. No fear of breaking musical norms. The proceeding attributes apply to DEVO. None of them apply to LL Cool J. He was just another schmuck with a mic in a sea of schmucks with mics. Yes, even back then. There are four acceptable hip-hop acts that qualify for the HOF : RUN DMC, BEASTIE BOYS, NWA, and PUBLIC ENEMY. They broke ground. Plus that was as close to rock as your were gonna get. Probably obvious by now I don't like hip-hop. Doesn't mean you shouldn't. But everything in it's proper place. DEVO worked harder on a Sunday morning than LL Cool J worked in his entire career. Once again HOF Committee : Shame On You.
    BTW : I'm sure many are eager to point out that DEVO might even think the LL Cool J belongs there. Guess what? Even my heroes are wrong sometimes.
