We came off of our first Keiki Hula season and multiple performances. And all we did was make lei poo with so many different materials: from Ti leaf to dried ulu flower casings and I used your video to help us get thru the multiple Leis. Mahalo nui loa. You were an enormous help. I’m your new subscriber!!
You are amazingly talented!! I really loved the part where you talk about the good mana while making it, I hadn't thought about how important it is! Also, where I live it's not easy to get fresh material to make these, so is it possible to use the same technique to make one out of artificial leaves? Thank you very much!
I have never tried it, but I'm sure it's possible! Instead of using ti leaves as the base for braiding, you could use raffia to keep the artificial leaves from falling :)
Thanks for the video! I just had may day last week and the male island reps had such pretty haku so I got really curious on how to make it. Really cool.
I would just place the flowers just like the way I placed the ti leaves inside the braid. If you think the flowers will fall off, I reccomend using raffia as the base so that it'll be tighter. :)
You wanna end your haku with a braid long enough to tie it twice behind your head. If it's loose, then you would have to take off some leaves on the end that you finished so that you can tie it tighter. Iyanah Marie Villon
I used to live in Hawaii so I had this struggle when I moved to the Mainland. You can actually find ti leaves at flower markets, like if you go to a wholesale flower place; they usually sell them in bundles of 8, 10, 15, 20, etc.. If you still can't find ti leaves, you can try banana leaves. If you really can't find anything, you can use raffia or string for the braiding part, and any pointy-looking leaves for the rest.
So beautiful! Such a helpful video. I’m trying to make one for my future husband. However, I live on the mainland, so I’m not sure I have access to ti leaves. I was going to use silk ti leaves. How many leaves do you think are needed for a 6ft open-ended (maile?) style?
Thank you so much!! A maile style lei may need around lets say 25-35 depending on how much you want to stick the silk ti leaf out of the lei. If the leaves look small, then you would definitely need more. I'm not accurately sure about the number but it's my estimate 🤗 sorry for the late reply!
Corliss Yamasaki I’m so happy to hear that ❤️ I am a full time college student right now 🤗 I recently received my AA degree in liberal arts so I’m working on my Bachelors degree in psychology at UHWO 🤩 How’s hula going??
40 people can't braid 🤦♀️Great tutorial!
Guadalupe TB your so sweet 🥺❤️
You could add baby oil to make it look more shiner
Mahalo for the tip!
MAHALO!!!!! I've always wanted to make a Haku. And you did a very wonderful job; betty beautiful! 🤗😊
How long can this Haku last in the fridge without getting all ugly?
If you wrap the haku with damp paper towel or damp newspaper around it, it should still look fresh after 2 to 3 days 😊 Hope Sale
How I wished you would put it on🤩... Also you have the gift of a beautiful calming voice. A complete tutorial, thanks for sharing.
Thank your for the tutorial! Helped clear some things up that I didn't get from other videos! Mahalo~

For the braid, you can use trash bags.
I've been told you can just microwave the leaves. Asking because I'm in Utah in the middle of winter. LOL LOL Great video. Thanks so much. Mahalo.
Thank you very much I have an assembly and this helped a lot!!!😊Mahalo

Need to see how you place the leaves on the band, slightly obscured. Otherwise nice.

this is sooo helpful for me in school im in a hawaiian p.c. school
So helpful!! Thanks for sharing 🤗
It might be easier if you debone the ti leaf first. Then it will be more pliable.
Gloria Kay-Gouveia thank you for the tip! ☺️🙏
How do I soften the leafs?
Good job on your video! Love it! Now, for go harvest plenty to leaf!

How do you add flowers ?
I would just place the flowers just like the way I placed the ti leaves inside the braid. If you think the flowers will fall off, I reccomend using raffia as the base so that it'll be tighter. :)
Can you use raffia to braid the pieces instead?
Yes you can! I reccomend using a lot of strands of raffia so that the leaves that's being braided inside will stay tight and secured.
@@aili2943 Thanks! I did, 3strands of rafia each line and it came out cherreh!!! Aloha!
Tnx
Can you put the ti leave in a freezer or fridge to make later?
how do you tie it behind someone’s head can u please explain that part me to?
You wanna end your haku with a braid long enough to tie it twice behind your head. If it's loose, then you would have to take off some leaves on the end that you finished so that you can tie it tighter. Iyanah Marie Villon

You are right! I was not thinking about that 😅
I love your video! I live in the Mainland any suggestion on a good substitute if I cant get the Ti leaves? Thank you😀
