    Thank you so much for showing these pictures of these masterful painters! I almost made me cry because I want to paint portraits like that. I remember seeing a Van Eyck painting at the. National Gallery USA many years ago and was stunned at the color and and how it looked as if it was painted yesterday. They are not huge paintings either! They must have had marvelous eyesight and small brushes. I’m 92 now but still inspired and trying. Thank you again and again for keeping the dream alive. Laura

    Thanks for all the close ups of those amazing paintings, in that wonderful old city, that I know I will never actually visit myself. What museums are next on our tour? 😊 Amazing how those old paints have lasted down all the years! (That dot though!????).

    I think you have it backwards, Scott: the Flemish painters were far ahead of the Italians at this time. Check the dates. For instance, van Eyck's paintings are contemporary with Masaccio, and Memlinc's paintings are earlier than Botticelli's. Compare the portraits. The Italians took almost 100 years to catch up to the Flemings.
    The fact the these are labled the Flemish Primatives just demonstrates what idiots many art historians are. The Flemings were the groundbreakers in European Realism.

    • @tomhighsmith

      He is now in West Flanders, where the linen and linseed oil also come from. Oil painting originated there and has since been improved by many others.

    • @michaeljohnangel6359
      @michaeljohnangel6359 Год назад

      @@tomhighsmith Well, actually, oil painting goes back to the 800s (as glazes over some kind of tempera-egg or glue), but the "Flemish Primatives" miraculously brought it to perfection in the very early 1400s. Nobody knows where their training came from; the Florentines, of course, learned from the Flemings.

    To see a really weird mistake, check out the position of the right arm in the "Portrait of Comtesse d'Haussonville" by French master Jean Ingres, the Frick Collection.

    Have you ever been to the Prado? I so highly recommend a trip to Madrid even if only to go there (the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza are world-class as well, of course). One of my favorite painters is Jusepe de Ribera, and they have several of his paintings in their collection.

    I spent some time in Bruges a few years ago, its a wonderful town so quiet and peaceful. By the way the artists of the 15th century were only called "primitives" in the 19th century when scholars and artists started studying them seriously.,it was not a term they would have used or understood themselves.
