  • In this video I need to construct some kind of roof structure to stop cats escaping from the catio / cat enclosure. I also talk about some other options for preventing cats from escaping from the garden.

Keith, an idea would be to get some cargo netting ( add some hooks ) to completely fill in the roof opening, that will prevent any outside cats getting inside, and is extra insurance to keep your little tiger safe inside. Great video buddy

My cats would get out of that, so beware if he is a climber. The reason they use metal is that claws cant cling to it unlike wood. On top of that ive witnessed mine all spidercat-ing upside down to climb out of the metal ones. Even the metal armed ones that spring down they learnt to hold on to until it took them back to the fence, then to hook their paws over the top and climb out.
Their ingenuity is he only reason we have a full mesh topper and sides.
1 inch Nylon knitted bird mesh is brilliant and if pulled taught they cant bite it. They still climb it, but it takes a knife to cut through it, and had not failed us.

Licky Micky seems pretty happy to be out. Those brackets that u showed at the start were what a was trying to describe in the last video kieth although in a bad way description. We ended up buying metal bar and bending it but didn't work my lot ended up figuring out how to get out. One thing will say is keep eye on Micky first few times he's out pay attention to places he keeps going back to because if there is somewhere even smallest gap that is were he will get out but in round about way trying to tell u. Or again at least that's what my lot did. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Lovely job on the scarfs. I made scarf joists for my loft conversion on 4x2s. I watched Robin Clevett and left Skill Builder a comment, they replied ! No No Do Not Do That on a joist !!!! Well of course i did, but i was making flitch beam joists with 6mm steel plates. The scarfs were awkward to make, i used a plunge saw for the inner linear cut, but my male parts were bigger than yours !! so i needed a proper plunge cut ( i didn't make that first straight cut you did ). I made everything so tight that i still haven't bothered with wedges yet, but when installed in the floor i used screws as you did.

Warms my heart to see little Mickie discovering his new outside space. What a lovely generous gift for your newest family member! Looking forward to seeing how you enrich the environment for him. When you decided to double over the mesh I wondered if it might be better to lay two separate sheets over one another instead, offset vertically and horizontally so the grids quarter each other if that makes sense? More rigidity I think, and much finer gaps so no danger of squeezing through.

If you ever need to use those knock-in staples again - they are way easier to hammer down straight if you bend the prongs in further so that they are parallel with each other (easier to pull out, but that may be a good or bad thing in future...)

@@RagnBoneBrown Two more tips using these sodding things - I use a wooden clothes peg to hold them for the 'first strike' to get them started... And I use mole-grips to bend them parallel; set the distance between the jaws and go through the whole pack. Also, you probably know anyway - use a heavy lump on the opposite side of the timber (like a big lump-hammer!) Knock them in against that to take the force of the blows, rather than relying on the mass of the timber; so the force is not transferred to joints or post-anchors or whatever. (You can tell I have experience of the knock-in staples - I do not like working with them! HA!)

Hi Keith just wanted to ask your opinion on something
I do general diy and want to buy a Millwalkee drill which would you recommend m12 or m18
Can you also please do a video on your m12 tools thanks Matt

Hi Matt, if it's for DIY use then M12 will do everything you need and more, providing all the tools you need are in the M12 range. I will try and do a video on it in future - thanks

A kennel-like structure with a cat bed/cushion inside might be a good idea for cold or windy days - so that Micky can be 'out' without being 'out-out' . . . . to quote the other Micky (Micky Flanagan) . . . .

Looks great. I built one for our cats in our previous house, that chicken wire is horrible stuff. I used the rolls of galvanised mesh that was about 10mm square, much more rigid and no give in it so was easy to nail to a frame. Definitely feels like you need an extra pair of hands for those U nails though 😂

    Brilliant work, Keith! 😃
And the best part, he seems to love it!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Plant some cat grass ( basically oats) so he can munch on it, provides fibre and a chew that he will enjoy. Just need a largish low tray to germinate the seed in, not much soil, as he will only eat it while it is young.

Keith I have a better, safer suggestion for your gutters. Here in the U.S. and Canada we have gutter guards under many brand names. I’m assuming they are available in the UK too. They are perforated covers for your gutters that let the water in and keep the leaves out. The better ones are coated (think Teflon) so the leaves just slide off. No more cleaning, no more climbing ladders. So less maintenance and much safer. They are worth every penny! Highly recommend! Last ones we bought we ordered right from Amazon. I meant to leave this comment on the first video. And installing these might make another good final patio/catio video. 😀
