  • Part 2 of a four part special. When Bernie Matthews arrived at Grafton Jail in the 1970s he received a smack in the mouth and a bowl of maggot-infested porridge. Bashings from prison guards left physical and psychological scars.

I do agree. People don't realise many of worst crims are politicians. Just different type of crimes

And if the screws killed someone at Grafton, it was classed as self inflicted.
Kattingal was so bad that even the screws that worked there ended up with PTSD from the place.

There was a documentary on KATINGAL in 1977 done by Paul Mullins TEN NETWORK. You have to order it to view. On program was Macafferty (deported to Scotland in 90s) plus there were interviews with Crump and Baker who were the first inmates in Katingal. Interestingly, Crump spent time in Tamworth Boys Home and Baker spent time in boys homes too. Baker had 5 siblings one of whom was a deaf mute who was commuted into Sydney to spend the week in special school. Baker's dad was actually a well respected service man in WW2 serving near Singapore and he was acclaimed by the military. Like many men who served during the time when he returned he took to drink. He worked the coal mines in Helensborough. Crump had the mentality and IQ of a 9 yo child and was barely literate. He had 4 siblings. Crump and Baker this year (2023) it is 50 years since their crimes and they would be the longest serving prisoners I believe in NSW. In 2003 Leonard Lawson shared a cell with Baker in Grafton for 3 days before he dropped dead of a heart attack in jail. Baker was told to mind him as Lawson had done something wrong within prison against the rules and it was a temporary measure until the authorities could work out where to house Lawson.

Rumour has it that the offender was a high ranking government official , once the evidence started to strongly point in that direction, Gary resigns.
      Go figure.

We need more Graftons, these prisoners were violent controlling thugs who caused mayhem in the normal system,, a lot were rapists, murders etc, most got what they deserved, if they toed the line and behaved they would have been ok and. never gone to Grafton.
