My favorite & only so far is a red leaf dissectum that I got for free from a tow yard. Someone was moving their prolly 20 year old tree, had a wreck & never claimed it. Was badly broken but with love & careful pruning, 5 years on it has a prominent place in our landscape & is stunning. Underplanted with lysimachia congestum & gold sedum, a painted fern & Caramel heuchera close by. I could have never afforded a tree that size, a gift from the plant Gods!
So excited you guys covered Japanese Maples. I've always appreciated them, but became obsessed after Jim highlighted Mr. Maple in a video last year. Although my trees are small, my collection has grown quite a lot since then. My favorite so far is Mikawa Yatsubusa. I sure wish the arboretum would open up on weekends.
Maples and dogwoods....my all-time favorite trees. Sadly I am a WV transplant in Central Texas and can not grow either here. 😢 Thanks for the beautiful tour.
The first tree I planted after I moved from zone 4 Minnesota (Where Plants Suffer TM) was a Japanese maple. So beautiful , but not winter hardy. Now in zone 8 Virginia I have six so far: Orangeola, Twombley's Red Sentinel, Sango Kaku, Seiryu and Emperor 1. A must-have for next year will be either Scolopendrifoilum (green form) or Koto No Ito, These have bamboo-like leaves, perfect for the front door. These are the most graceful garden trees.
My hubby actually watched this one with me. He loves Japanese maples. So far we have only two in our garden; shi shi gashira and red Japanese maple. Both are small so we are very concerned about the imminent cicada arrival. Thanks for this wonderful video.
I don’t know what variety I have but it really had a growth spurt this year. I’m always a little nervous about pruning it but I like seeing more of the trunk. You should do a video on pruning.
I just love the Mikawa Yatsubusa family of japanese maples. I have a Mikawa Yatsubusa, Mystic Mikawa, japanese princess, tattoo, Mayday, hupps dwarf and a Mikawa Yatsubusa seedling that I'll use for bonsai one day. Just love that lineage. I'm really loving my orange flame as well.
@@branch7010 I'm a new collector as of last year, I just planted my orange flame in December (in the south). Am continually amazed with the subtle changes as its woken up this spring
I have recently started growing JM's from cuttings and now have 12 which survived. My Dad gave me a Sycamore Maple sapling back in 2000 which we potted up and it has grown well. By 2016 it was about 12 feet tall. This May, I pruned it down to 2 feet leaving a side branch and it has responded very well with 5 new branches and many leaves and is 4 feet tall now in a large pot. I even have it appear in some of my YT videos as it's been around for so long :)
Wonderful sight indeed. Have you made an Autumn video? Would love to see your spectacular garden in fall please! I have 12 varieties but adore all of them as each one is loved for a different feature. Gorgeous trees.
My favorite Japanese maple overall is an upright green leafed cultivar named 'Glowing Embers'. It was selected and named for its autumn color, but we love it for year round beauty.
Tamukiyama is my favorite, it is a proven best performer in Chicago zone 6b and also quite heat tolerant. It is a lace leaf burgundy japanese palmatum with bright red fall color. Growing habit is dense and cascading
I just started my garden. I bought 2 bloodgood. To start with and i want to make a garden of just maples. I like the light yellow color with the orange ,red color around the Leaves. And many more .
A recap in the fall would be great to display how the foliage changes. I have avoided acers in my garden due to the hot, dry, and extremely windy conditions of our area. Even with shade protection and attention to watering their foliage tends to fry. 🙁 Perhaps potting some would be good. Are there particular dwarf varieties?

Thank you for such an informative video. I love seeing the full grow trees in the garden.

Love Mikawa Yatsubusa and it's offsprings. My favorites!
I ordered my Red Dragon from Mr. Maple last year. It is doing well. I am trying to learn how to train the branches like bonsai. I have much to learn!
Beautiful, love Japanese Maples.👍❤️😊
Maples and dogwoods....my all-time favorite trees. Sadly I am a WV transplant in Central Texas and can not grow either here. 😢 Thanks for the beautiful tour.
I do believe you can grow japanese maples there, many in my FB groups from that state, you just need to protect from the hot afternoon sun

You must join the Japanese maples and conifers group on FB. You'll guickly see your collection grow after seeing all that is out there
I pruned my Japanese Maple this year and now that it has leaves out, it is stunning.
Really enjoy your videos. I am learning a ton. I can’t wait to spring to put what I have learned to work.
Ooo my favourites are Katsura, Bihou, Oshio-beni, Sango Kaku, and Seiryu

Awesome collection of Maple Trees! Thank you for bringing it to us!
Good concise overview of how to use JM in the landscape. This is important education for the public! LOVE your approach!!

Great tips and tour!
I have 34 cultivars, big and small, all my favorites especially Sango Kaku, Moonrise, Autumn Moon, Koba Shojo, Higasayama and Shin Deshojo.
Acer palmatum sangokaku, red stems, beautiful leaves
Excellent video. Thank you!

Orange Flame is a fast growing heat tolerant beast!

I'm such a fan of Brie! Really like how she passionately talks about plants! would love to continue seeing more material like this!
I love our Sango Kaku, Coral Towers because of the leaf color changes and the red bark. ♥️

Another top palmatum maple in zone 6b is the faster growing, purple bordered foliage, small leaf, Murasaki Kyohime. It is a bush shaped beauty.
Inaba Shidare and Crimson Queen are great too in Zone 6b but requires Sun protection in July , August, and September

Great... We liked and enjoyed to the end. Thanks Have a happy day!

Absolutely beautiful
Pretty trees! Tempts me to be discontent with the trees we have.

Please continue this channel! ❤️
I have a Lion's Head Japanese Maple, looks like a large Bonsai tree 😊
I would love to see pictures. Did you train the branches?
@@thefitzs I don't train the branches, it's free form. It's about 5 feet tall
I also have one with almost yellow green center and bright to dark red on the outer
Thanks a lot you two! Way to add to my addition. lol
Thanks for the great video. I was wondering if you know how old the 'Aconitifolium' cultivar is in your video. I did not realize it gets that tall.
I had one Japanese maple I ordered from an online nursery and it died 2 years later. Haven’t tried to replace it. I think the location was a problem
What was the name of that very first tree with the twisted trunk?
Here in zone 9 (southern CA),, do you think they will servive?
thank you
Very cool
Hi
Do you know the type of maple for the one that has all the roots exposed?
It’s at the start of your video
Just bought my first Japanese maple...Oshio Beni. It’s supposed to be a little hardier in my Oklahoma zone 7A.
What is the one in the thumbnail?
Osakazuki. Green leaf, thick cuticle so sun tolerant, very vigorous big growing.
I have the second one shown just more upright and less full.
Hana matoi
I just got one last week. It's bed has been made and now it need to plant it
Also my #1 favourite in my collection of 40+ JMs! Close 2nd is Kawaii.
Nice
5:28 was looking suss
6:38 confirmed it 😂❤😊

This lady has never been to zone 6 Missouri and it shows. Jim is not much better in this regard. You all seem to think all of Zone 6 is Nova Scotia.
