wrong kind of magnet for woking thru the tank, you'd want magents with the polses fairly far apart, but also wide poles, so they have more flux than the sheet metal itself will take up. Those pot magnets have poles very close together, so excellent hold, but very little "penetration" so to say.

“Watch Wes Work” used the term “perpetual content generator” a few days ago to describe a Massey Fergusson Backhoe. You have good taste if you are also watching Wes and borrowing his witticisms.
I feel the original exhaust stack was clamped to the muffler flange and not the bonnet flange and was a smaller diameter. It would be very unusual for the stack to mount to the bonnet flange.
Your exhaust smoke is black rather than blue, which indicates unburnt fuel rather than burning oil, which then implies to me that your rings, pistons and barrels are okay and the oil use is more likely to be valve stem seals and that your injectors may need overhauling instead of an engine overhaul.
That is going to be a great little tractor by the time you’re finished. I am really enjoying these videos.

Great video John: I'm surprised you didn't attach a piece of flex hose to the fuel pickup at the bottom of the tank and attach a float to the flex hose end so you would draw fuel from the relative top of the fuel level rather than at the bottom of the tank. I think this would eliminate any possibility of bottom feeding sludge and water and crud in the future IMHO. 🙃

Woh up on pulling the tracks off. Try this instead: Fabricate a pair of new wear plates to bolt under the main track arms. Make them full width of the arm for ease of fitting. Then clamp them on with a generous amount of stiff plasticine with a thin film of Glad Wrap top & bottom so it doesn't stick to the wear plate and arm. Unbolt the plates. You now have a pattern to build up the upper surface of the wear plate with weld to compensate for the missing metal on the track arm. You'll need to use the old eye-o-meter to match the plasticine pattern, but it doesn't need to be perfect.

When I lived in Brooklyn New York years ago fixing a gas tank meant removing it, putting it under the nearest fire hydrant, filling it with water, and soldering away. Gas pockets at the top made gentle explosions until all the fumes were gone. Ah, youth. Regarding your fuel tank patch, my concern would be rain water getting in: it looks like you've got it sufficiently sealed to prevent that.

John, when I was in the Army we used to "purge" fuel tanks on those M60 fuel tanks by dumping a whole bottle of dish soap in the tanks and sticking a hose in and let the water run till got all the soap out. Those bubbles would pick up all the loose particles and float them out. Something to think about.

John - When you finish using your paint rattle can, invert it. and clear the supply tube and spray nozzle by releasing some of the propellant until it no more paint is released. Keep the spray can inverted and store in that orientation until the next use. This should solve your spray paint problems for the future.
Hope this suggestion helps. Use it for all the rattle cans you keep around.

When I was doing Heavy Equipment Mechanics what we would do with those worn idler arms was grind them flat and smooth then weld a piece of sacrificial flat stock on top. When it wore to a certain point we would grind the welds and put another piece of material on top. This saves a bunch of time instead of welding up the surface and lasts almost as long.

IF you can't get the tracks off - I'm seeing a thick copper shim between the bracket and the bottom of the rail. Use a hard wire in the MIG and do build up to fill the missing area. Then find some strips of AR400 (or 500) and weld them onto the bottom of the rail as new wear strips.
Oh, and always remember that there is "new cat yellow" and "old cat yellow". Not sure when the change happened.

Another great video John. In my 40 years of diesel experience compression tests on a diesel are not necessary. If a diesel has low compression white or gray smoke out the stack and excessive blow by will be present. You can temp gun the exhaust ports at idle to test cylinder contribution. Check the intake and exhaust sides of the turbo for possible bad turbo seals. Most large diesels from that era just used a lot of oil.

You can often clean spray paint tips. Replacement tips are also good to have on hand. Invert and spray a little too clean, then wipe with a solvent. For supper 77 toulene works. Mineral spirits, paint thinner might work. You can also recharge the can with compressed air if you run out of propellant or get a chunk before the spray tip.

33:49 soak the tip in mineral spirits for a minute and you can clean out the clog. If it's because the paint in the can is just not mixed well, Adam Savage showed a drill attachment for spin mixing paint cans, and someone on here used hose clamps on an old recip saw blade. Both options are much more effective than our puny arms 😂

If you are only going to use the dozer infrequently, then consider placing those strong magnets inside the tank, place them close enough to the pick up tube to capture any errant rust particles, it'll save some of the issues. Or simply wait for your in-line filter to clog and then clean the tank :)

  • @barrygrant2907
    @barrygrant2907 8 месяцев назад +1

What I like about your channel is your attitude. When I was training young airmen to be NCOs, I tried to impress upon them sometimes you have to make a decision and live with the consequences--right or wrong--because you own it. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Even when things don't go or aren't as you planned, your "It is what it is" is true, and you just deal with it. As for the tank, job well done. I would have painted or rust-treated the underside of the cover plate and also the fill neck since both those areas are more prone to air and condensation exposure. But yes, a full tank is a happy tank when it comes to rust prevention. One last comment, you could have placed one of the magnets on the inside of the tank next to the pickup tube opening to catch any metallic particles. Add me to your subscribers.

You'd be surprised what another 1/4" would make. Providing that tank stays as clean as it is, I agree with your comment but I'd rather play on the side of caution and still raise it off a bit more but then that's me and a lot of OCD 😀 @@LinkinPark4Ever1996

For the wear plate, you should put one on track frame and one on the wheel slide. By doing it this way, you will wear on the plates rather than wearing into the frame and the wheel side wear plate or vise versa.

6:50 plug it, fill it with water, take a plasma cutter cut out one side, weld on a flange and drill and tap it for a rubber gasket and cap, sand blast the tank out.

When fixing the guide on the track, you should build up the parent material and make flat. Then weld on the shim from 3 sides. If you just weld the shim in on 4 sides you eill have to take the track and idler off if you ever have to fix it again. Just a thought!

Idler wheels. Fill the uneven area below with weld then put new wear strips over that.

Brilliant video John and looking forward to watching your next adventure.
A tip on the spray paint cans, when you have finished spraying hold the can upside down and press the nozzle until no paint comes out. This stops the nozzle clogging up with dry paint 👍👍👍

Hello John, I reviewed a few comments but I do believe checking the fuel tank CAP the cap has a breather to allow air flow so fuel can drain. So the breather needs to be cleaned or replaced with new internal materials. That could be part of the dirtiness inside the tank filled with dust. See u later John, from another John T. in Calif.

To recharge your spray can, take a needle inflater for balls... and attach it to the spray can after you take the spray nozzle off. Turn on the compressor and press down on the needle attachment to allow air into the can. I use a milfaaukee 12v compressor set to 50 lbs. Shuts off when at said pressure. Works for wd40 cans.. should work for any can.... although the air may cure some of the paint... but hey... you want to finish the spray can... not store it for another year... or decade... or for your grand kids...

This video made it seem like the fuel tank was just an afternoon fix vs the multi day headache you had trying to start the engine, cleaning filters, replacing filters and jerry rigging an inline filter.

Jon: Great video as always! I always take the spray nozzle off a paint can when I store it, and drop it in a glass bottle of acetone or lacquer thinner for storage. I have a whole bottle full of clean spray nozzles to choose from when I need the paint again...

Hi Jon. I would weld that inspection plate onto the tank, then there's no risk of water tracking in under the seal (bad seal!) and contaminating the tank. Unlikely you will ever have to go back inside to clean it out, and if you did, it would only be 30 minutes to grind out the welds enough to pry it open. By the way, angle grinders are my favorite tool. I have three Makitas each permanently set up with a cut off disc, grinding disc, and a flap wheel.

Soak the spray can nozzle in acetone to revive it. And remember to always blow the nozzle clean after use by turning the can upside down. (But you already knew that)
I have a dedicated cardboard box i use for that, its deep, and captures most of the overspray.

Really a great idea to access the tank to clean it out. I have the same dozer, and I just blow the line back toward the tank and it clears the junk for a while. I like this for a more permanent fix.
