Depends on what you use them for. I have chronic rhinitis that often causes sinusitis, triggering during the night depending on my sleep position and causes a migraine-like headache every morning. As the son of a doctor, I had access to antibiotics and that was the way I handled sinusitis: 1 ibuprofen and a couple of amoxicillin, wait a few hours until the headache goes away (sometimes it didn't).
Then I tried a diffuser with eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon, peppermint, and it reduces my nasal congestion so much I can physically feel it going on inside my sinuses. The internal swelling is gone in 15 minutes, no medications needed. Does it cure my rhinitis? nope, that'll probably require surgery (already had one). But they make the pain go away faster and without killing my gut.
They don't work for everything, but if your issue is related to air, they pack a punch.

And yes, I do use essential oils, but not randomly, not 'blended by some mystical somebody or other', and as part of my treatment regime, not AS the treatment itself. The hearing loss thing is mentioned because I've had people tell me it can be helped with essential oils. By this point, I've stopped listening because nope. My brain doesn't work properly, and no amount of essential oils or any medication or intervention is ever going to change that. So many annoying people... 😑

Name comes from French word "essentiel" which nowadays means essential but one of the old meanings was "extracted from plants". It's still found in some biology or chemistry books and to this day woodworkers still use the term "essence" to mean a specific kind of wood.

    • @mikemondano3624
      @mikemondano3624 Год назад

Wrong. Never had anything to do with plants. It is from Latin _esse,_ to be. They are oils (mostly, but not exclusively) that represent the "essence" of the plant as understood by human experiences. Ocimene is the major ingredient from Basil, for example, because it smells like Basil. β-Pinene smells like pine. Limonene smells like lemons.

At a very basic level, just liking the smell will have a positive impact to some extent, in the same way that the smell of food you like can have a positive effect. All of the senses work this way, like seeing a man/woman you find attractive can lift your mood or seeing a animal you think is cute. Feeling a light breeze on a warm day, tasting nice food/drink, hearing a song you like. Our emotional state is very much influenced by our senses.

Essential oils seem to be commonly anti-bacterial. Perhaps ancestors who were attracted to such substances had better survival rates. I think something similar has been put forward regarding a preference for spicy food. I would guess that is why the sound of running water is relaxing. Usually running water is the safer option when needing a drink in the wild.

  • @shieh.4743

I have no doubt that smell affects mood - and that there is a scientific explanation. Raising dopamine and serotonin levels is fairly easy to do through any positive associative behaviour. Rocking gently, as in a rocking chair for example, does this and I could easily hypothesize that scents from natural sources could trigger innate responses in the human brain related to the natural world. We know that prisoners exposed to nature - trees and water behave far less aggressively. The sound of water lapping lulls people to sleep and is generally very soothing. Whether these are merely associative or innate responses, there physiological responses are clearly real. Why should pleasant scent be any different?

  • @seancarnell1503

I always thought it was a combination of placebo and classical conditioning. If I only use lavender when I am trying to relax, my brain will eventually associate the smell with relaxation.

Relevant anecdote: I used to chew dried lavender at work whenever I was anxious and it would immediately mellow me out, as does a good dose of peppermint. I would be interested in seeing research about various mint-family plants and how people respond to them; they're used so prevalently in medicine, cooking, and aromatherapy that it's worth focusing specifically on them. Of course, they also just generally smell and/or taste good and that pleasant and often bold sensation could be doing it too.
Also, catnip is a mint, and definitely triggers a feel-good response in (most) cats; the mechanisms behind that could be similar to what goes on with humans, and possibly other mammals. It's definitely worth a good look at the very least.

Some oils like peppermint are excellent antibiotics especially for the skin. Peppermint kills MRSA and VRSA dead. There is an NIH paper on this from about 2017. The push behind the research was the rapid rate at which some bugs gained resistance to the antibiotics man was inventing. The final paragraph went something like this : "There is no doubt that these essential oils will be a useful adjunct in the fight against microbial drug resistance. "

    Hey! >Trained Aromatherapiest here<
    1. Aromatherapy oils contain more than terpens, they have different chemical properties that may absorb through different mediums.
For example Limonene - a lemon like substance rhat has anti cancer properties.
Oxides - compunds which irritate the skin yet, when inhaled assist with airway clearing. (Eucalyptus for example)
    2. Different mediums are: Direct application, application with base oils, inhalation through steam and even digestion, or drinking the plsnts water like extract which is far less potent.
    3. Consult an aromatherapiest before using these methods since these are very potent substances.
It is always no matter what the issue, best to consult a licensed armoatherapiest!!! These compunds are much more potent then herbal medicine.
Thx for the video, all the best.

The only reason why I ever got rid of my hereditary acne was with jojoba, tea tree and lavender oil skin treatment. It started showing results just a couple weeks after consistent usage and it never made my skin have a inflammatory reaction like so many pharmaceutical creams and pills can give you. I've never had clearer skin than I do now and after years of trying all kinds of acne treatments essential oils were pretty much the only thing that worked on me.

Nah. Tea tree oil has a whole bunch of terpenes in it that have antibacterial effects. They're used by the plant to protect itself. Lavender I think also. Jojoba is just an oil that can dissolve tea tree oil, which isn't water soluble. I also use tea tree oil for my acne, and whenever I stop my acne comes back after a couple of weeks or so. Using it with other products I can get about 95% clearance or better, and it's dirt cheap and quick and easy to apply.

Plant derived compounds are very important to medicine. Plants, fungi, bacteria, archea and bugs are locked in perpetual chemical warfare/arms race.
Logically these compounds can be used to our benefit. Like penecilin against bacteria, or plant based insect repellents (cedar smell repels moths). However, just any old oil is not necessarily going to do much more than make a room smell nice.
Our own blood is filled with a soup of antimicrobial compounds, they are referred to as the compliment system.
I don't expect jasmine oil to cure cancer, but it can make your house smell nice and that relaxing smell can boost your mood which can give you some real physiological benefits, mainly in the form of lower stress leading to less stress induced health problems. (And never underestimate the power of a placebo).

Essential oils are not skin soothing whatsoever. Infact, they are the literal opposite. They also cause an allergic response that your immune system is going to make when it comes in contact with them.

Terpenes are not well understood in general but some have been studied and have been found to affect neurotransmitters, some are antimicrobial, etc. Ask Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners how well essential oils work for patients. Just because they're not studied much (because they won't make a pharmaceutical company a lot of money) doesn't mean they don't have medical value on some level. For example, thymol (from thyme) is used in botanical disinfectants. Thyme essential oil contains thymol. Lemon essential oils contain the terpene limonene and it has been preliminarily shown to help with mood (and is also frequently found in cannabis). Again, just because it's not mainstream doesn't mean there's not evidence of effect. But it also isn't a cure all. I certainly wouldn't treat cancer or sepsis or severe mental illness with essential oils alone.

It would be interesting to see just what essential oils do to the body. For example I read that human skin has olfactory glands that seem to react to some scents and heal faster in response. Does that mean certain scents could help with certain skin problems or have mild anti-aging effects, and does it have any effect on other cells? I don't know, but I'd love to find out.
There's also the properties of different oils that can have an effect: some oils like tea tree are antibacterial, and sweet almond oil is a muscle relaxant.

The participants, even if they can smell it, may think that the room they're sitting in for the questioning just smells a certain way and they don't make the connection between the smell and the study thus making it blind. I'm sure there must be some other levels of control in such an experiment.

But really though, while I doubt that they cure cancer, they can indeed help you feel calm, happy, and peaceful. And if you're sick, using the eucalyptus oil has a similar effect to using Vick's vapor rub except it could be a bit cheaper when you consider you need only a few drops of oil to make it work.

That vapo rub crap actually is MADE of essential oils, if only you bothered reading the ingredients list :en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicks_VapoRub camphor is synthetic, but is based on natural camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) essential oil composition; then you have eucalyptus essential oil, menthol (i.e. a component of mint essential oil), cedar essential oil, nutmeg essential oil, thymol (a component of thyme essential oil) and turpentine oil, i.e. an essential oil extracted from pines wood.
Question is: a LOT of them are actually very irritating for skin and mucosas, so you have to use it sparingly and far from eyes, nose and mouth. In fact, mint essential oil is very irritating too, and if you can rub it under your nose without a problem, then very probably it's not a real essential oil, or maybe it's diluted.

I agree with a lot in the comments, I wished this would have touched on the topical application because that's how a lot of people have been using them. Fragrance can be nice, I personally love the smell of juniper berries, but what about tea tree and treating acne?

I'm not really big into essential oils, but smelling smelling peppermint oils really clears me out when I have a stuffed nose. No placebo going on since I was a complete skeptic when I tried it. I figured, "what would it hurt to just try it"? Lavender is rubbish though lol. Hate the smell and it gives me a headache!

You literally only talked about aromatic use of essential oils. Also, essential oils are not so called because they are essential (read: necessary) but because they are the “essence” of the plant from which they are taken. I wish you had actually taken the time to cover other ways oils are used. My family uses oils, and honestly, I almost never use it as a mood booster. I do, however, use oils for disinfecting and immune support. We diffuse oils, yes, but we also apply them topically and sometimes take them internally. This video barely scratches the surface. I expect more comprehensive coverage from SciShow.

He didn't because that's all pseudo-science. Aromatherapy isn't pseudoscience, notice how he was intentionally vague and alluded to the unsure nature of these oils even just as aromatherapy tools? It's called placebo, and some people are genuinely numb enough to eat snake oil right up.

One clear benefit not discussed is that pleasant, natural smells encourage deeper breathing and the increased oxygenation of the body could also provide many of the positive benefits.

Nobody thinks that they are called "essential oils" because they are essential or necessary to life. They are called that because they are made of the essences of various plant materials. From Merriam-Webster's definition of essence: 4 a (1) : a constituent or derivative possessing the special qualities (as of a plant or drug) in concentrated form; also : a preparation of such an essence or a synthetic substitute (2) : a volatile substance or constituent (as of perfume)
    b : odor, perfume
Only the people at SciShow would need to have this explained to them.

Zombiesize did you actualy bother to read the paper because it says that the oil uses its hydrophobic bonds to breack down cell walls and membranes and disrupt enzymes inside the pathogenic bacteria(gram positive). It is very inifective against gram negative and scince it has hydrophobic molecules that bind to cell membranes it is going to harm your cells as well. This is what happens when you come up with a conclusion and look for evidence instead of look for evidence and then come up with the conclusion based on that evidence guessing from your 10 second comment im under the impression you never bothered to check if the paper actually suppourts your conclusion.
