I just successfully defended my dissertation and everything is so fresh in my mind. I agree with all your sentiments in this video. No one will hold your hand through this process. You have to be self driven. Great realistic advice throughout this video.

@@DrWilliamMartinPhDright now I am sleeping much better, resting my brain by watching trash television and applying for assistant professor teaching positions. Academia and research are my passions. I started this journey wanting to teach but I fell in love with research. I already have manuscripts written and plan to begin editing for publication soon.

The PhD program is such a different experience. There is nothing else that can compare.

It sure is, but it's much easier when you have a cohort that helps keep you motivated...at least until dissertation!

But the cost! 😔 I want a Ph.D in Nursing Education but the cost just doesn't justify my potential salary.

100% agree Adam. Unless your passion is to teach at the graduate level, or dedicate yourself to research, the PhD is probably not worth it. However, if you have access to tuition reimbursement, grants or other scholarship, then go for it!

There are ways to offset the cost of school. But you are correct as I will be taking a major pay cut going into academia. The trade off for me is that I will be pursuing my passion as a researcher, informing policy, and advocating for real change. This is the passion needed to get through a PhD program. I am hoping to enjoy a better quality of work life too as I get older.
