  • This is a demonstration of the seven aikiken no suburi as taught by Morihiro Saito. The suburi represent core movements of the aikiken system practiced in Ueshiba O-Sensei's Iwama Dōjō. These solo exercises accustom you to the basic cuts and thrusts with the sword. You can then use these skills in partnered sword practice or kumitachi. As a solo practice you can develop coordination, dexterity, strength, balance and internal connections.

    An excellently executed example of Saito Morihiro Sensei's form.
    Our art is alive and well.

    Excellent. I use a 40in x 1 in Stainless Steel Round bar. Weighs about 35 lbs. Hell of a workout and just strengthen the whole upper body. The wooded Ken just flashes. And I use a 5ftx 1 in Steel Bar for Jo work. Definatly feel every muscle after that workout. I’m from Pittsburgh. Love my Steel.

    Why does he seemingly have his hand above the Tsuba?

    • @SnowblindOtter
      @SnowblindOtter 3 года назад +2

      Conscientiousness of hand placement. On a bokken, normally the hilt portion is actually shorter than on something like a shinai, iaito, or a proper sword, so you would ideally have to place your hand just slightly higher than where the tsuba would sit if you put one on the bokken. Usually you would have your middle- or ring-finger rest where the tsuba would sit.

    The bokken is almost touching his back when he rises it. Is it normal ?
    With a real sword that’s quite dangerous init ?

      The first suburi encourages a full range of movement, the second suburi may be more practical. It's not knowing where the sword is that makes it most dangerous.

      Its only for the suburi form.

      It's the one sided sword - no danger to touch yourself with its blunt side, I think.

    is aikiken part of akido or no

    • @AikidoAuckland
      @AikidoAuckland  7 лет назад +3

      It is part of the curriculum of O'Sensei's Iwama Dojo and was a regular
      part of his practice there. Different streams of aikido have different
      positions in answer to your question.

      In Iwama style, taijutsu and aikiken (or better bukiwaza, because it also includes the jo), study together, there is no one if there is no other

      In O'sensei's explainations, ken is the basic instrument for the aikido. You have to practice ken,jo or yari. Its not an option, its the main education.Dont lose yourself about modern styles etc.
