    i put a set of these on our 22 M3 LR a few weeks ago replacing the originals. These are markedly quieter and smoother. Passengers commented on it and asked what i'd done so its not just me that noticed....

      A friend of mine is coming over this week to help me film with his M3. We'll repeat this test and I'll be curious to see how it stacks up against the 2019 and 2024 versions.

    Very interesting results and useful to know for us all with our next tyre purchase.

    Cabin noise includes the sound created by airflow. Airflow varies with direction and speed of wind. A tail wind of 20kph is equivalent to travelling 20kph slower in respect to the wind component of the mouse, obviously comparison of the rotational speed is valid.

    We just put regular old tyres on our model y. Little bit more road noise which we don’t notice now. Lost a bit of efficiency. But better grip and less than 1/2 the cost.

    Thanks for your testing. I bought the Hankook iON evo AS IH10 18 inch tyres for my Tesla Model 3 three months ago, and they went well through the Canberra winter. These smaller tyres cost me about $320 each, fitted, from Jax.

      I previously picked up their buy 4 get 1 free deal, but let it lapse. So I found the same thing from the folks down in Geelong.

    We got a set of these pur on oue Model Y back in Dec '23.
    Have done 20,000km on them so far and are holding up quite well

    The Foam to Suppress noise in the tyres apparently has one drawback. If you have No Spare tyre and use the Repair Kit Can it may not seal the hole as the foam belt you showed will prevent the filler from getting to the leak. Luckily my Leaf has Space saver spare. Is Wheel arch noise suppression another option?

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  26 дней назад +1

      Wheel arches, I reckon that's where I need to focus on next. Cheers!

    Hey Chris - as a MY owner like you I'm really impressed by this. The only thing that worries me is tyres are usually quieter when they are new. Any chance of re-running the test after some time?

  • @johnt6298

    I wonder what caused the difference in stationary noise and what impact this had on the rest of the results.

  • @MatthewBayard

    Have you looked at getting a 'Model 3 Wind Noise Reduction Kit Gen. 2' It fills in the gap between the roof panels. It should make a big difference.

  • @xiaowei1
    @xiaowei1 Месяц назад

    The only issue with the list, and as demonstrated by the outcome is Tyres make a massive difference. They would all need to be tested with same tyres to know which one is the best. To be fair, cars come with a set of tyres, and those are the ones you test with. But by changing out the tyres, the list then becomes skewed. This was pretty good content, and very helpful. your table may have to start becoming 3d in nature with different tyre types.

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  Месяц назад

      Thanks for this; and excellent points. I guess if the type of tyres are the same and then applied to different vehicles, you can understand how quiet a car is.

    • @xiaowei1
      @xiaowei1 Месяц назад

      @@chrisvanderstock I have a GV60, and i often wonder if a different set of tyres would make it even more quiet. You have peeked my interest so i might start looking at different tyre reviews to see if this is a possibility for my next set when the time comes. its good to know the brand you reviewed gave such a positive outcome for the tesla... so much so, it became quieter than the GV60. love your style of reviews, please keep up the good work.

    Hey Chris, have you tried those noise reduction kits that come with additional rubbers to put on doors? I always wondered if those would actually make a difference in addition to the tyres. Thank you for the video!

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  Месяц назад +1

      Haven't tried them. I saw a video several years ago by that European guy who is huge in the EV world... or was (!), he's fallen off my watch list and gosh darn it, I can't remember his name. He found that they didn't do much. But thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. That and how to improve air flow in the MY - my biggest beef with it!

    Hi Chris thanks for an informative video. Do you think a Kia EV9 would be able to achieve a 20% noise reduction, on the already outstanding lack of noise, Happy EVing.

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  Месяц назад

      Gosh it already is one of the quietest EVs I've tested, so I guess you'll have some sort of reduction but maybe not by 20%?

  • @Petlaw99
    @Petlaw99 Месяц назад

    After 65 000 km I replaced my OE Hankook's with these. Whilst I did not do the sound meter test, I did notice some noise reduction. However, new tyres are always quieter due to their deeper tread. I think I will probably go back to the S1 Evo 3 OE tyres as they did seem to last better than these new Ion tyres. Only thing is, the OE tyres are much more expensive.

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  Месяц назад

      Good to know. FYI - I searched for quiet EV tyres and these along with PP came up. I didn't bother trying to get the original sort as I felt road noise was coming from them.... which turns out to be true.

  • @davidpearn5925
    @davidpearn5925 Месяц назад +3

    Obviously NEW tyres can't be compared to OLD worn tyres......... right Chris ?.

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  Месяц назад +1

      Correct. The original tests were done in late 2022 when the last set probably had 5 to 10k of KMs on them. So still a fair comparison?

    • @chrisvanderstock
      @chrisvanderstock  26 дней назад

      Yes, between the passenger belt buckle hitting the B pillar and the boot allowing a lot of noise into the cabin, they could do better.
