Delighted that you enjoyed the river. Great advice. Around twenty five years ago we were dropped off on the three day trip and and given a small booklet on how to approach the rapids, nothing else. At one point my friend and I discovered we had quietly drifted for a couple of hours totally immersed in our own worlds. We both emerged from our reverie, looked at each other and wondered what on earth had we just experienced.
I can very much relate to this statement. It can be something of an other-worldly experience at times. I can see how you would easily get lost in yourself and the river. The ease of travel down the river astonished me, even with the challenge of the rapids.
I managed to get in with 3-4 weeks notice at peak season, and most of my TA hiker friends only had a week's notice. But not all of them were able to do only the 5 day journey, some had to add on a couple of days due to bookings. Taumarunui Canoe Hire were absolutely excellent at getting us all onto the river at the busiest time of the year with very short notice. They're very well practiced!
wow great advice and very helpful thank you for answering some of the questions that where sitting in the back of my mined . i really enjoyed this video . thank you
My pleasure Darren! My biggest piece of advice is don't stress too much about it. And definitely if you decide to use Taumarunui Canoe Hire, I'd feel confident that Ron and Karen would do a great job of trying to get you onto the river when you want to be there.
i've booked at the flying fox so it was nice to hear you mention that however - doing a half day paddle from Jerusalem down to the fox, hopefully there's no rock throwing , might hafta take my bike helmet
Awesome! Glad to hear it! It's probable there is no longer an issue at Jerusalem. During my season there were reports of issues via the Guthook app but my dad and I never experienced any problems... Except for our capsize!
You're welcome Grant. This is a section which can be quite difficult to organise, hoping it will be a great resource to get hikers started with their prep.
Extremely helpful. I think my wife and I will probably bail out at that earlier point you mentioned. Mostly because she and I haven't had much canoe experience. Do you have any insight on what you have to do with the canoes at Pipiriki, or is it the same as if you completed the whole section?
Good idea! So you would just organise a canoe for the Whanganui Journey section of the route between Whakahoro and Pipiriki. This is actually easier for you as your canoe company will meet you and the rest of your group at Pipiriki on your final day on the river. Then you would carry on walking (or biking, if you choose) from there. You could easily walk to the Flying Fox in one day, and then from there to Whanganui the day after (don't underestimate how much it hurts to be back on your feet again after a few days on the river!).

Need to book at least a month in advance for holiday season.
