Haha! I knew the video was long, so I set my intention to set aside the time and patiently take everything in. When he started going through the entire history of mankind I was forcing myself to find it interesting, which surprisingly I think DOES help a beginner understand EXACTLY what you're trying to do when removing material to make an edge. BUUUUUUUUT - that was a little much. 😂😂. This was created in a different time when people had better attention spans, but most of the modern RUclips videos I watched were the opposite - Sure they're shorter, but nowhere near as in depth. I haven't seen anything with the happy medium. Oh well. At least after watching this I'm a sharpening EXPERT!!!! Don't doubt me!! (Like I doubt myself....)
The facial expressions 🤣 on Marni as he takes us back to early man are cool that "bowl" sharpening technique was a nifty one...but when Sal said "technically our stones, being "man made" are also an "artificial" gemstone 💎 must admit my ears perked up a bit... In 10th grade I worked w Dupont as I'd raced BMX factory sponsored and had a design needed "bearings" so they gave me some Rulon (ruby injected nylon...) ones to apply to my design...sadly the bicycle was stolen so I enlisted moving on...but yeah any time I'm learning of a special composition it's interesting...
thinking this was a boring "hold the knife like this and do like this" i was amazed of how informative and how good this demonstration is , glad i watched the video
It shows how behind the times and how Sal doesn't listen to his customers. Produces DVD of instructions due to price savings of DVD (ignores that DVDs are pretty much extinct) He is clueless.
Mr Glesser is a man to be respected in so many ways, his ideas are an inspiration to every person who has an interest in knives.. He is one of my heroes.. 👌🔪
The main person, SAL, was extremely charismatic and gentle. The gal was wonderful; the third person added to the script. I found it wonderful. My old Spyderco system only had two holes. I IMMEDIATELY ordered the new 204 system. Thanks for a GREAT video.
Love my Sharpmaker. Works better for all my knives than anything else I've owned. I just got my first Spyderco knife, a Manix 2. The blade is scary sharp out of the box but was very impressed with how the Sharpmaker tuned up the blade. Awesome.
Awesome instructional video! What an awesome tool this appears to be. So versatile and easy to clean. I believe I’m heading to Smoky Mountain Knife Works today to buy one. I collect Spyderco knives and have a lot of them. I should probably include the Spyderco sharpener in my collection. Thank you for a great tutorial. Awesome job.
Dear Sal, I have a bowler derby hat with a cutting disk hidden under the brim. Can I use the Sharpmaker to sharpen my hat so it can decapitate marble statues like it did when it was new? I may also want to baton it through some firewood. Sincerely, Odd Job
+Dave Biddle Interesting that you ask. The Sharpmaker actually does quite well sharpening bowler hats. Just use your finger as a guide and maintain the angle. All tools work better when they're sharp.
Very interesting... really such a simple and logical concept... so well thought out... its not something for freehanders but for everyone else perfect!
My bestest friend has me interested in knives. Told me to watch this video when I got my kit. 10/10 would watch again. Sal is the man! Super informative!
I bought this sharpener based on this video and a bunch of others that this is a great knife sharpener. I tried it on three different knives and could not get one to cut paper decently. I thought maybe it was the knives none were very expensive knives. I took one of them a little Buck pocket knife to my workshop precision adjust and was able to sharpen it to hair shaving sharpness. I’m sending it back to Amazon I guess it works for some but not for me.
I just got the Sharpmaker and my first two attempts turned a dull carbon steel knife semi-sharp, and a sharp stainless steel knife semi-dull. I’ve got a lot to learn lol.
Update a year later .this sharpener has made my knives ,axes, machetes like a razor..Mostly I just need the brown/grey stones and that makes it sharper than factory finishes .a GREAT product and very short learning curve to use properly .You MUST do the 20 strokes as he recommends and believe me you will NOT fail.
I have a sharpener that works the same way, though not a spyderco sharp maker. I did the 20 strokes and my knives are mega sharp. I am planning on buying a sharp maker soon though, because mine can't sharpen all of the different things like a sharp maker can.
Marnie is so good she could sell refrigerators to the Eskimos ! (And yes, I have had my Spyderco klit for 6 years, and learned how to use it by watching this very same video. Go, Marnie !
Started this video to get a good laugh because it looks like it's from '93. Ended up watching the whole thing and now want to buy a Spyderco sharpener 🤦♂️.
I know that stare. Unfortunately from experience. That's the "my wife cheated and we're going to counseling and I'm trying to stop every ounce of my body from beating her to a pulp and I can't do a divorce either because of the kids and no prenup" I feel for you Mr.Spyderco man.
...and the State is anxious to remove their father from your children's lives. It is the primary goal of the devil; destroy a father's relationship with their child.
@@kbk011 it's pretty hard to sharpen a completely dull knife. It takes time. Keep your sharpening rods clean by rubbing them with an eraser. If this doesn't speed up the process, try getting the diamond rods.
I've had this system for a year. It broke on the first use (scissor slot broke) and I still can't get a decent edge on anything. I've watched the video and read the manual so many times. The stones load up so fast. I have better results freehanding with a $10 Norton stone from the hardware store. Biggest waste of nearly $100
iTheGeek lol. I am really enjoying my Sharpmaker, but due to the wi-fi 3.0 electricity requirement, I've been unable to take it camping and can't rely on it in a bugout scenario.
iTheGeek Thanks for the tip. I'm going to stock up on unicorn oak fatwood. Finally, I will be able to always rely on my Sharpmaker, in any scenario. #unicornoakwood

You know this is gonna go on forever when Sal starts off with "Before we had fire.."

Sal seems like a very mellow man. He knows his stuff that's for sure.

Sal is truly a master of the blade.
I don't even have this thing, but I just love Sal too much.
You don't have a Sharpmaker? I bet you're still a virgin too, huh?
Joey Splats sheeet joey y u so savage
Joey Splats LMAO got eeem
I love the guy doing the demo he's so knowledgable and skilled!
What an incredibly informative video even beyond just the purpose of learning how to sharpen. Sal truly is revolutionary in everything he does
For me, an extremely useful video that taught me the range of applications and gave me confidence to do it right. Thank you.
Thanks for posting. I don't think I have anything any more that's capable of playing the DVD that came with my Sharpmaker.
Jim Derry yeah I know, what the hell? I don't even have a DVD player in my new laptop.
Thats why I'm here.... MSI GT73 Titan is a beast with no DVD player... lol
Same here

Extremely enjoyable - I've owned the SpyderCo for a few years and never came close to knowing its true potential. I learned a ton watching this.

I love my Sharpmaker and Spyderco knives. This helped me sort out the written instructions. I did 8 pairs of scissors to start.
Diane Miller nice!
I simply love my sharpmaker. It is a great tool.
I met Sal some years ago in Vegas, a VERY nice and really sharp fellow!
A sharpened fellow with well- honed skills :)
He seems to really know his stuff this chap so I just ordered one of these.
I would buy anything this guy sells
Thanks for the update, old, much appreciated

I do like the Spyderco knives!
Didnt really get it to work perfectly before this video... Now, razor sharp!
What I need is a Mindsharpener. Guess it's back to RUclips for me
There's so much great information in this video, I learned a lot. Thank you.
This is a great system. I've tried using stones freehand numerous times but am no good at that. Great guided system.

I learned some new ways to use mine. Thank you for the excellent video.
