If you're going to use the smudge tool, I recommend that you go into your brush settings and turn on "scattering" this will help it blend much better and I personally use this form of blending often.

Updated tutorial on practical color blending in Photoshop
    00:16
Video focuses on practical solutions for blending colors in digital painting.
Challenges beginners to turn basic color flats into polished, smoothly blended outputs.

Manual color mixing for blending colors in Photoshop
    01:27
Pick color from one side and paint it on the other side, then repeat with the opposite side
Continue blending new mid-tone color from central area and repeating the process until smooth transition is achieved

Adjust smudge tool strength for better blending
    02:41
Low strength results in slow and uneven blending
High strength creates drastic smudging and lacks neatness

Importance of keeping the wetness setting around 20%
    03:55
Maintaining wetness at around 20% helps achieve smooth and clean blends quickly.
Ensure all colors are merged into one layer to avoid distortions and achieve a smooth blend.

Blend colors smoothly using low opacity soft round brush tool
    05:06
Transition smoothly from one color to another for a gradual blend
Use mixer brush tool for a properly rendered output on curved surfaces

Achieving realism through a blend of soft and hard edges
    06:21
Referencing good sources is important for complex forms and shadows
Maintaining brush size control for selective blending to ensure realism

Achieving realistic blending with various techniques
    07:37
Adjusting brush size and using eraser for controlled blending
Adding gradients and highlights for depth and realism

Enhance details with veins using low brush size and high opacity
    09:02
Use highlight colors to paint towards shadow area
Add depth to veins with shadow color for volume and highlights

For the smudging approach: You can enable the brush scattering, which will lead to a pretty fast yet aggressive blending of colors. Depending on your brush, this also can result in interesting blending patterns.
For the mixer brush: You don't need everything on a single layer without transparency. Turn on the "Sample All Layers" option at the top and it will basically do the same thing without merging anything.

    • @TheGeekArtist
      @TheGeekArtist  3 года назад +41

I found that an ideal setting for the smooth smudge blending would be a 40% hardness round brush with scattering turned on and spacing turned off. Works very well.

When using the smudge tool, try a hard brush with the spacing turned "off". Don't set to zero - there's actually a checkbox next to spacing in the brush menu - un-check it. Then experiment with the "scattering" and "count" settings to find a combination that works for you. Check out the results. You can soften the brush slightly if you like.
This is a great way to blend - it also works on layers with transparency, unlike the mixer brush, so for me this is a huge advantage.

@@malejude4752 I do use CC. I use CC 2015 because I find it a lot more stable and well optimised for my computer compared to any of the newer Post 2018 versions. So it's a matter of personal preference. The interface and layout is almost exactly the same with very little difference. And I like how the shortcuts are here. However I do use CC 19 sometimes when I'm inking or doing lineart since it comes with a brush smoothness option which can be very helpful.
