If you're going to use the smudge tool, I recommend that you go into your brush settings and turn on "scattering" this will help it blend much better and I personally use this form of blending often.
And turn off spacing under the spacing parameter, it will make the brush 1000% more faster and will never lag, please try it and tell me what you think

Thank you for demystifying the process of going from almost crude [but well-placed] blotches of pure color to a smoothly rendered final, and demonstrating how the simplest tools are all you need to accomplish the task. I have always had more of a head for linework than shading, so this is a much-needed roadmap to get from one to the other - thank you!
This is a fantastic video. I started digital art a couple of weeks ago and blending colors + smooth rendering were the things I was struggling most with. This not only helped a ton with the methods but also gave some insight into a workflow and process to accompany them. Thank you!
For the smudging approach: You can enable the brush scattering, which will lead to a pretty fast yet aggressive blending of colors. Depending on your brush, this also can result in interesting blending patterns. For the mixer brush: You don't need everything on a single layer without transparency. Turn on the "Sample All Layers" option at the top and it will basically do the same thing without merging anything.
I found that an ideal setting for the smooth smudge blending would be a 40% hardness round brush with scattering turned on and spacing turned off. Works very well.

@@amalsyed5458 When you have the mixer brush selected, up, where you see "load", "mix", "flow" you will see almost in the corner "sample all layers". You can use this option too with the smudge tool.
When using the smudge tool, try a hard brush with the spacing turned "off". Don't set to zero - there's actually a checkbox next to spacing in the brush menu - un-check it. Then experiment with the "scattering" and "count" settings to find a combination that works for you. Check out the results. You can soften the brush slightly if you like. This is a great way to blend - it also works on layers with transparency, unlike the mixer brush, so for me this is a huge advantage.
