It came out in 1933, 90 years ago. As a child, I used to play it on a Columbia Parlophone wind-up gramophone. Both it and I are the same age. The gramophone was lost in an air raid during the May Blitz on Liverpool, in 1941.
Jerry Garcia brought me here. He would play this song from time to time with his own band. I originally heard this version on April 23rd 1997 in Chicago on a program called Blues Before Sunrise. I now play this on my guitar and perform it. Listening to this song at two in the morning while taking in the summer air while smoking a cigarette.
The Inkspots used to be described on the record label as 'four boys and a guitar'. These was in the days of descriptions such as 'foxtrot ' or 'waltz' on record labels.
Be aware that the "instrumentation" behind the singers on this record was provided by the singers themselves imitating instruments. The only real instrument heard on Mills Brothers records during this period: a single guitar.
We need good old simple songs again.Where the whole family can listen to without putting your hands on your child ears.Because of sexual explicit lyrics and profanity they have in songs today.
HI Guy. My Mama wasted her time playing 'Lazy Bones' on the piano and teaching my sisters and me to sing along in harmony.....all five of us! Now, if that's not lazy I don't know what is! No "lazy protagonist" should ever have such a voice. It was such a waste of perfectly good time!
that's a good thing you should get a ukulele and you would like the songs you can play like these ones its not hard to learn i have a felling you all ready play an instrument give it a try you might like
I haven't heard this song since I was a child....50 years ago. I love the Mills Brothers.
Thanks for sharing this!

Thumbs up for the Mills brothers. They were unique and so listenable.
I am practically ten thousand meters deep immersed in real music. Thanks.
My grandfather has sung this song to me and my cousins our whole lives and I never knew it was a real song. I love it!

Also like the latter-day version, with the electric guitar the way John, Jr. likely would have done.

i like how the mccarthy era version refuses to give the lazy protagonist a voice and instead is just a pure admonishment of laziness.
Leon's version is also on youtube. Great stuff. Good song, I like this version too. Thanks for sharing.
Redbone was evidently a superfan of the group, if you've ever heard his music.
