  • These are some of the reverse culture shocks that I have noticed since moving back to the United States from Germany. I miss being an exchange student, and I’ve come to realize how many aspects of America are quite strange in the perspective of someone who has lived in another country.

    America is like 50 times bigger than germany while only having like 5 times more population. That is why our houses are closer together than the houses in america I think. Also houses in the US are waaaay cheaper and less "quality build" than houses in germany. You can literally punch holes into US walls, while in germany if you punch a wall it will do most likely nothing. At least that is what I know about american walls and houses.

    • @TBFSJjunior
      @TBFSJjunior 4 года назад +168

      Just to be a smart ass (it's just my German nature).
      The US is 28 times the size of Germany and has pretty much 4 times the population.
      And to add to this some math smartassery:
      "5 times MORE population" would mean 6 times the population. (The word "more" actually adds 5 times the population.)
      I know that is a tiny difference but it gets on my nerve. XD

    • @KempoDE
      @KempoDE 4 года назад +19

      From what I have personally experienced while I lived in the US (Reno, Nevada), I can tell that houses aren't cheaper than in Germany. Depending on where you live in the US, yes, they may be. The average home value in Reno is $400,000. This is less than where I live in Bavaria, but the average house in Reno is also smaller than the average house where I live in Germany.
      TL;DR: If you want an equivalent house in the US, you often have to pay about the same.
      And if you live in or near the big, popular cities like LA, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, ... you pretty much need to compare it to Munich.

    I lived with a host family in the US for 4 weeks last year, and my reactions were exactly the same. When I asked where to put the different types of trash, they were really confused why I would ask that and not just throw it in the only trash bin they had. Also the first evening I was basically waiting for the whole family to come together and have dinner, until I realised that we wouldn't eat together. I was also missing the different types of bread in the beginning and then realised there isn't that much bread available in grocery stores anyway. And yeah, the roads and the cars are all so big compared to German standards.

      I was in Tokyo last summer for a few months and damn, I missed bread so much. They actually had some, three slices of wobbly American bread in one bag, each wrapped in plastic again. It was the saddest thing I had ever seen.
      After two months I couldn’t take it anymore and went to look for some real bread and I actually found a few German bakeries. The owner of the one I went to actually spoke some German and had real Pumpernickel. It was amazing. I never would have thought I could find a piece of home on the other side of the world

    In Germany,the plastic bags used to be for free,too. But they changed it like 5-8 year's ago, because they realized,that it's much better,when people are more aware on how much plastic they are using and if they really need that all.
    I like the recycling system too and I think,the only reason I won't go to the US is,that I would totally miss the Bäckereien (forgot the English word)

    7:20 I’m German but I’m studying a math-base subject abroad now, so I come around quite a few numbers. My uni is internationally focussed and my programme is on English but we use US books and a lot of the professors studied in the US. Also the math part is US focussed so books use 1,000.00 instead of 1.000,00 but literally no one of my friends is used to that (idk if it’s fact based but I think that the 1,000 is used solely in America) so literally everyone has to adapt and switch to this new notation. And I think it’s soooo inconvenient hahahah and I always keep falling back into my old habits 😂 so feel u!!

    Waving at each other came from the same reasoning that military members salute each other, it is a sign of friend and not foe. Knights in medieval times would raise the face cover on their helmets when approaching a friend to show their face, and this is where the hand gesture for the military salute came from. Waving as a person passes, is simply a sign that the person is friendly, and has kind intentions towards you; that you are in friendly “ territory “. Just think of it as a knight raising their face mask, as a sign that they are not going to attack you, so you can just wave back to return the friendly gesture, as if you were a knight raising your face cover back. Hope that is a good analogy ( Analogie ).
    Sich gegenseitig zu winken kam aus der gleichen Überlegung, dass Militärangehörige sich gegenseitig begrüßen. Es ist ein Zeichen von Freund und nicht von Feind. Ritter im Mittelalter hoben die Gesichtsbedeckung ihrer Helme an, wenn sie sich einem Freund näherten, um ihr Gesicht zu zeigen, und daher kam die Handbewegung für den Militärgruß. Das Winken im Vorbeigehen einer Person ist einfach ein Zeichen dafür, dass die Person freundlich ist und freundliche Absichten gegenüber Ihnen hat. dass Sie sich in einem freundlichen „Gebiet“ befinden. Stellen Sie sich das als einen Ritter vor, der seine Gesichtsmaske hebt, als Zeichen dafür, dass sie Sie nicht angreifen werden. Sie können also einfach zurückwinken, um die freundliche Geste zu erwidern, als wären Sie ein Ritter, der Ihre Gesichtsbedeckung nach hinten hebt. Hoffe das ist eine gute Analogie (Analogie).

    I'm from Mexico and I could say the USA is so different than any other America country to Europe, is kind of weird the differences of the distances, how the people move and by consequence how they live, in my opinion, the USA isn´t efficient on terms of designing an easy, comfortable life or way of living, this, of course, happens in some cities of USA, and in some places of the other America countries isn't easy/efficient as I said, every country has good and bad things, advantages and disadvantages, Great Video Montana

    • @JoseHernandeZeitgeist

      @C J mate u clearly never traveled or lived in Mexico and stayed here months and u didn't saw by consequence how the life is here, cartels are not an everyday thing in the whole country, there are just certain places where the narco is installed and normalized by the people, the north side in the bord with the USA, by obvious reasons, and in the South region where the state has no control, anyway I just made that comment to mark how the cities are designed in terms of distances, how u in the USA u need a car to make your life, while in other countries you can walk to any place (with the obvious danger of crime in the streets) and how this affects your life and health

    I do the bus stop thing, I moved to an area where there are bus stops everywhere and you can get around really well using the ÖPNV, I'm from an area where there are more cars than people, which means that the roads are wider and the public transport is shitty for German standards, and when I'm back home I constantly imagine where a bus stop would be nice and how I would make connections, we have busses but they're all hourly.

    Either - this was an April's Fool video ... or you have been officially Germanized ...
    But I think it was the latter. I have heard so many people, who returned from Germany to the States express that A) the public transport was so great here and B) our bread is to die for and C) we are so much more ecologically conscious (well, if you forget VW ...) and last D) that they truly miss the "lingering" in a restaurant/café

    Zersiedelung is a thing in Germany too. The phenomenon that towns just sprawl out because everybody wants to live on their own. It's a big problem because it gets so inefficient when you look at all the infrastructure needed (electricity, water, communication, rubbish collection) and it gets difficult to serve with public transport.

    Well the thing about greeting strangers depends. In cities you don't do it bc you couldn't greet everyone. In villages, everyone knows everyone or has seen them at least once, you simply say "hallo" or for my region "moin" when going past, sometimes you get a little chat but it's just like 5 Sentences or so, before you mind your own business again. Efficency is key :P So we do greet people when walking past but only on the country side and if you are a "Landei" :)
