If you don't have a financial plan when moving to the Philippines you're asking for disaster. There's nothing simpler than writing down what you get monthly (social security/pension/IRA/401k, etc) vs what you spend. It's a shame that personal finance isn't a required class in the US school system. It's one of the most basic principles we need to know to function in our society.

It will be total disaster waiting to happen. Where will they go if they sold off everything in US. Rents are astronomical right now averaging 2200/month for a 700 sq. ft apt. Studios are 1800-2000/month.

I live in Colombia and during the 10 years I have lived outside the US, very rarely do I meet retired Americans who can manage money. One guy I know blows through $7000/month and still asks friends for money. My conclusion is most of these guys are like that now because they have always been that way. Offering common sense and logic does nothing for them.

Mike, you're spot on with this vid. I just did 3 months in Cavite without a budget. My expenses ran away from me and I spent $5,000 usd each month. I was not staying at luxury hotels (RedDoorz) but i was averaging $600 usd per month on the rent. The rest of it went to eating out, traveling, Grabs, buying stuff at the malls, etc. $15,000 usd in 3 months. It is not cheap living in the Phils. I'm coming back with a $2,500 usd monthly budget in mind. If I find myself exceeding this then I'll consider relocating my retirement elsewhere. Thnx for your insight.

Watch his $800 USD Budget video. Whenever my wife and I go to the Philippines for 2 or three weeks we spend at least 5k. But we are going out to eat everyday and many times bringing about 10 of her relatives along. Before we leave we buy groceries for her 3 sons and give them $100.00 each. We sometimes stay at one of her sons house, but I don’t like it because there’s no hot water, no AC, the shower is a bucket of water, and you dump water in the toilet to flush it. Sleep on a cushion on the floor. All of that would be no problem if I was still young. However, you don’t find good deals on rent and other things unless you know someone from the Philippines. It depends on what part of the country you live in too. You should be able to find a nice furnished place with AC and hot water for $500.00 a month or less.

I am from the UK and thinking of retiring in the Philippines in a few years and have been watching videos about the cost of living there. Since most of the channels convert into US Dollars, I have decided to work out my budget in dollars instead of GBP but since my pensions will be paid in GDP to simply put the difference aside since 1GDP = more than 1 Dollar. So if my budget is $1800 dollars I will have £1800GBP and can put the difference in exchange rate aside for emergencies. Hope you understand this.

The receipt way to keep track is a good start to set the monthly soft expenses. I do like your 100k monthly. Curious as to how that works out. I'll be using the envelope system once mentioned/recommended as for me to stay on budget. My "full Time" arrival date won't be until I'm 63.5 yrs old of which is Jan of 2028 and quiet a bit can happen between now and then. Always enjoy your content. Your friend from afar, JM PS. Mike, you are not leading your family like you should. Take responsibility and take charge now or later you will be very sorry. Don't say you hope Janet does not spend. Janet only spends what you let her spend. Sh has no access to your Social Security money, US accounts, or anything else unless you hand it to her. Break down her allowance to a weekly amount instead of monthly. You pay the bills. You go with her to buy the groceries. Man up. If you need to stop her allowance for a month or two to get it under control, do it now.

I'm not over there yet, but when I do come, I'll have a comfortable budget of 140,000 pesos a month without ever having to dip into my 401k savings ($450,000 US). That budget will even allow me to put away another 100 bucks into savings each month. I want a spacious 2-3 bedroom rental in a development with a pool. I want a housekeeper / maid to work 5 days a week, premium local health insurance, a membership to a quality gym, and good travel budget so I can take a trip every month to a different area of the Philippines. I'll buy a motorcycle. I'll might also pay for a visa service company that takes care of that paperwork and hassle for me. So I guess my questions would involve the cost of insurance, gym, maids, and visa services. I think I can easily pay 700-800 for rent. I'll be 63 and single, very good health (workout nut). Dating a girl will come eventually but it's very low on the priority list.

I am asking because I have noticed that you somewhat frequently mention your health, and also your desire to provide for Janet & her son, so that they can be financially secure when you pass .. If You can dedicate yourself to improving the Strength of Your Heart it will improve the Quality of the Remaining 20-or-30-years of your life, and allow you more time with your family, and allow you more time to prepare the financial framework you earnestly want to provide .. I urge you to please consider starting a Cardio Exercise Program to Strengthen Your Heart .. As we age, our hearts grow weaker, and shrink in size, just like our arm and leg muscles do, but you can actually increase the size & the strength of your heart if you "exercise it" regularly .. You Will Live Longer & Better .. Maraming Respeto sa Iyo at sa Iyong Pamilya.. ..🙏😇..

You live within your means and have funds in place to cover emergencies.
It is particularly applicable when living in a foreign country where you don't have access to resources you have at home.
I think the first thing you need to do is get out of 'tourist' mode.
While things like eating out may be cheaper than at home doing it too often is going to eat into your funds.

I have a BALL living on $1500 per month in Oklahoma, where I can ccw a pistol at all times and have a silenced AR-15 in my car at all times, and wear concealed armor, too. You may laugh about that now, but in a year or so, it's not going to be a joke anymore. When the USD collapses, as it WILL from all of this over-printing of currency, lots of things are not going to be a joke, at all. and I dont mean just in the US, either. Half of the GNP of the Phills is money sent home from Filipinos who are living abroad. Without the US, Europe, much of Latins and S America, Canada, etc, are going to collapse, too. and so will the Phills. There's a million sq miles of BLM land in the US. $120 per year gets you a 20 acre "minining claim", You can have a garden, small livestock, hunt, trap and fish on that claim You can have one up north for the summer and one down south for the winter.

@@Fell214 you have it backwards. I have zero fear, cause I can handle anything that happens and I've got the US medical system within 10 minute's reach. Get bad sick or hurt in Phills and you'll find out. It takes all damned DAY just to get a scrip for some sedatives in Manila! Go ahead, keep living in denial about how precarious life is in the Phills. My wife is pinay and if it were not for the money we sent her family during the 2 year lock-down there for virus, a dozen of her relatives would be DEAD now.

You Americans are so silly. Nothing is going to collapse, people have been saying that for 20, 30, 40 plus years 🤣😂. If it does, so be it, but I’m not living my life “just in case”. Otherwise people would never go outside in case the sky falls in. Not a way to live. Just come to the Philippines, meet beautiful people, eat good food, relax…

There is no 'social services' any longer in the U.S.. Even for the benefits one has paid for out of their wages. No longer Unemployment insurance. You can pay into it, but not claim it now. No longer Workman's compensation insurance. Again, you can pay in it, but it covers nothing and cannot claim it. There is no medical through the State anymore. Those benefits no longer go to American citizens, they've been cancelled. So not losing social services by moving to PH, but don't have to pay for them which will be put forth to the services needed in PH.

@@mikesphilippineretirement I live here and am currently dealing with UI. Food stamps for who? A white male BY LAW and rules now does not receive benefits. I have the government documentation to prove zero 'benefits' (that I paid for for 38 years of working out of my wages) are available for the money taken out of wages working.
You have been away for a while and are not familiar with the system of the U.S.. I currently live here and have to deal with the government. All that I tell you I can back up with Gov't emails, laws, procedures, and rules as I have been dealing with the Gov't for the last few Months. There are no available services. The guidelines for these services clearly state we do not get these benefits. We are not an illegal immigrant, minority, or foreign Country.
I say to you with fact, all the money paid into UI, Workman's comp while working, you will not receive and will be denied.

@@mikesphilippineretirement Yes. The human rights division Secretary of State Unemployment division section 24.11.454A , (i), (iv) has to be filed form (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 federally) . The employer cannot discriminate. The form for Civil rights division to apply for UI has specific categories of marked boxes in relation to the law passed. There is no no box to check for a white male. The law only applies to minorities for discrimination or unlawful termination. The law passed in the house and senate, does not include white males for equal rights and protection. If a white male was terminated, fired, or denied benefits under wrongful termination from that company/business under Federal and State law, it does not apply to you. Even though one is listed legally by law to be disabled. Because there is no checkmark for 'causation' or 'white' male. Only for minorities. We no longer receive UI, even being disabled.
49-2-303. Discrimination in employment. (1) It is an unlawful discriminatory practice for:
      (a) an employer to refuse employment to a person, to bar a person from employment, or to discriminate against a person in compensation or in a term, condition, or privilege of employment because of race, creed, religion, color, or national origin or because of age, physical or mental disability, marital status, or sex when the reasonable demands of the position do not require an age, physical or mental disability, marital status, or sex distinction;
The portal complaint form asks: Nationality, sex, age, etc. for the form. There is no box to check for Caucasian or white, so the law doesn't apply to white males, just everyone else. Truth. I just went through this.
Form of Complaints: A complaint must contain, at a minimum, the following information:
3). A brief clear and concise statement of the facts, including pertinent dates, constituting the alleged unlawful discriminatory practice. Please include the protected class you believe to be the bases of the alleged discrimination: age, race, color, sex (including sexual harassment, pregnancy, sexual orientation and gender identity), national origin, religion, creed, disability, marital status, vaccination status, familial status (housing claims only), political belief (government claims only) and **retaliation.
There is no box to check for a white male. No benefits. That's what America has come to. Sucks....
