- This song was initially based off of some writing I did after we hiked a trail called "Shades of Death" in the Hickory Run State Park in Pennsylvania. It grew a bit into a representation of the many adventurous hikes we have taken from the east coast to the west and even more so to represent working through the many challenges in life itself over the years.
Hope you enjoy!

The Original Writing
Two weekends ago my wife and I visited Hickory Run State Park in Pennsylvania. We both enjoy hiking and a challenge.
When we saw the sign for a trail named “Shades of Death” and the park literature describing the trail level as “most difficult”, we were knew we were up for the challenge.
Some people might be intimidated by the apparent difficulty, but we decided to give it a go anyway.
Although described with such a warning, the trail turned out to be beautiful, especially this time of year with the leaf colors just right and the several small waterfalls along the way running nicely with water.
There were a few challenging ascents, mostly because of the steep sides of a ravine and the narrow trail burdened with exposed tree roots just waiting to trip you up and send you down and into the river below, but with a bit of perseverance and care we made it through just fine
All in all, a great little hike with little of note that we would consider a major obstacle that we could not manage. The result was a rewarding experience and a lot of natural beauty that we would have missed out on if we were afraid of the challenge or the warnings that it might be too difficult to handle.
The moral of the story is simple. In any challenge that may lead to something good, pay little attention to the naysayers who say don’t try just because something is difficult. If you do, you may miss out on a great opportunity or experience. If the path becomes too much to bear along the way, you can always head back or try another route. Worst case is you tried and have gained useful experience. Best case you were successful and reached your goal. Either one you can be proud of.
