At the end of my CMU show, host Ben Cameron asked Eric to sing this song. The performance is completely impromptu, there was no rehearsal and the accompanist is sight reading. Watch this vid through to the end - Eric's performance is absolutely amazing.
A very good impromptu performance & shows how differently this song can be interpreted. For examples of more passionate & different renditions I have heard on youtube recently please check out Steve Balsamo or Jake Ohlbaum or Rory Dulku (my 17 year son) and of course Michael Ball & John Farnham - posted by Mick Dulku
I only want to say If there is a way Take this cup away from me For I don't want to taste its poison Feel it burn me I have changed I'm not as sure, as when we started Then, I was inspired Now, I'm sad and tired Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations Tried for three years, seems like thirty Could you ask as much from any other man? But if I die See the saga through and do the things you ask of me, Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God Want to see, I'd want to see, my God Want to see, I'd want to see, my God Why I should die Would I be more noticed than I ever was before? Would the things I've said and done matter any more? I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord If I die what will be my reward? If I die what will be my reward? Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord Why should I die? Oh why should I die? Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain? Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain Show me there's a reason for your wanting me to die You're far to keen and where and how, but not so hot on why Alright, I'll die! Just watch me die! See how I die! Then I was inspired Now, I'm sad and tired After all, I've tried for three years, seems like ninety Why then am I scared to finish what I started What you started, I didn't start it God, thy will is hard But you hold every card I will drink your cup of poison Nail me to your cross and break me Bleed me, beat me Kill me Take me, now! Before I change my mind
Jesus Christ Superstar is a show all about passion. Gethsemane is a flashy number simply by the range of emotions involved and the opportunity for falsetto. That being said. It's not meant to be a show off piece....which at times felt like this went into. Otherwise amazing performance. Just would love to see some genuine passion in there.
He was born with it and has improved over the years. One must be born with perfect pitch and a four octave voice. The rest is all breathing and technique.
AshlynneMorocco not fully true you can train yourself up to that point, I should know I have trained myself to sing from F2 to E5 within the span of a semester
This is just not true. Nobody is born with perfect pitch. Nobody is born with a four octave vocal range. And neither are necessary in order to be a great singer.
It's weird hearing a shortened version of the song. I am, however, very impressed that the already high song is done a step higher than the original.
The "why" is super impressive what really gets me is the way he slides down to "die" straight after and the way he riffs back up, so fucking powerful!

Wtf! Genial!
I only want to say
If there is a way
Take this cup away from me
For I don't want to taste its poison
Feel it burn me
I have changed
I'm not as sure, as when we started
Then, I was inspired
Now, I'm sad and tired
Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations
Tried for three years, seems like thirty
Could you ask as much from any other man?
But if I die
See the saga through and do the things you ask of me,
Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree
I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God
I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God
Want to see, I'd want to see, my God
Want to see, I'd want to see, my God
Why I should die
Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?
Would the things I've said and done matter any more?
I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord
Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord
Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord
Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord
If I die what will be my reward?

Nail me to your cross and break me

Kill me
Take me, now!

It's called a 4-octave voice.
He was born with it and has improved over the years. One must be born with perfect pitch and a four octave voice. The rest is all breathing and technique.

This is just not true.
Nobody is born with perfect pitch.
Nobody is born with a four octave vocal range.
And neither are necessary in order to be a great singer.
You don’t need perfect pitch to do this. Also no one is born with 4-octaves. This is something you train for for years.
Amazing vocals...but with all humility...he didn't really mean what he was saying...He needs some passion, don't you think??
