Splendid! What a fabulous performance. I know the hymn tune, 'Thaxted', very well, but I really love this setting by Salvatore Reitano and you play it with great flair and drama. Your Sonus 60 is quite awesome - full organ is a thrilling sound and is certainly a match for any Hauptwerk sample sound organ (with yours being a unique sound and an instrument in its own, distinct right!). Did you know that “O God Beyond All Praising” is traditionally sung on the Fifth Sunday of Lent as the words speak of the fleetingness of earthly splendour and the glory of the Eternal Kingdom? The text was written by Michael Perry, who served as Vicar of Tonbridge and a canon of Rochester Cathedral, in 1982. The lyrics were written specifically for the tune 'Thaxted' by Gustav Holst, a melody more often associated with the British patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, My Country.” Perry wrote these new lyrics “in response to a call for alternative words that would be more appropriate for Christian worship.” 'Thaxted' is the name of the small town in Essex where Holst lived, and the melody is part of the movement “Jupiter,” from his orchestral suite, Planets. It was Holst himself who adapted the theme to fit “I Vow to Thee, My Country,” written by Cecil Spring-Rice.
Thanks Graham! You and Ralph are our musical Encyclopedia! Actually I always heard this tune being sung in the ‘I vow to Thee my Country’ version as I like to watch all things Westminster Abbey + Royal Family 😃 and then, suddenly, I was watching the Priest Ordination liturgy at the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington and, at the end, they started to sing this tune with other words! Shock, checked the Hymnal and, there it is! I liked it so much that I asked my friend Salvatore to write a prelude and the last hymn harmonisation knowing that he would do a great job. He did not disappoint me, as usual!!! 😃
Bravo!! Stunning!! (Just like every one of your uploads - always so exciting to see one in the feed to watch 😊) - I absolutely loved the harmony throughout and very much appreciated the hymn and words in between. And goodness that’s a wonderful sound!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Thanks Jerry! I would like to upload much more and more often but unfortunately the time I have for this beautiful activity is very limited! I am very happy that you like both the piece and the organ sound! Thanks 🙏🏻😃
Hi, DP! What a captivating performance. The arrangement is simply amazing and I sang along at the end, which turned into a morning prayer^^. Thank you!!!
This is a stunning performance of a fabulous piece of music - thank you! The Prelude is particularly striking and your registration choices evoke great atmosphere. A robust and famous hymn tune like Thaxted renders brilliantly in Salvatore Reitano's paraphrase and for me, this whole piece and your consummate playing and artistry have instant appeal. Bravo!
I'm listening to your playing and my headphone says, "How come I don't get this when you play?" I say, "....Be quiet. Just listen..." Simply marvelous.
I only knew this melody aj Holsts "Jupiter" until now. That it is also a hymn is new to me, perhabs it is especially in germany unknown. Nice Piece with very nice harmonics. And your playing has a very solemn atmosphere.
I discovered this hymn pretty recently too, always heard it in the ‘I vow to thee my country’ version 😉 or as the Jupiter theme from The Planets. I am glad you like the piece! Thanks for dropping by 🙏🏻
STUNNING!!!! Not a single word can describe how beautiful your playing was. That organ is something I tell ya! Also thank you for adding words. Reading them helped me even more to understand what this hymn is about.
Thank you for yet another beautifully played piece. I immediately listened to this when I saw a new video from you. Always a pleasure listening to you play, my friend.
Thanks very much James! This was the most difficult recording so far, not as far as the music is concerned, but because my devices decided to let me down one after the other! And I am afraid that my microphone is possessed... 👹
Hi DP, wow that was really moving! I really like this tune, but haven't heard it to these words. What impressed me the most was your lovely use of dynamics which was effective in setting the mood and adding more impact at the crescendos! The conclusion was very grand, you kept me hanging and thinking will we arrive home (home key!) soon! Haha! Bravo, great work! Take care John
