Hockey has definitely peaked. Youth hockey teams that require 20 hour per week and thousands of dollar commitments by parents are not sustainable. The NHL bought some time in moving south because most of their fanbase was getting old and now they are dying off. The Phoenix disaster along with Atlanta should be huge red flags that hockey needs to get back to its roots in the north which to be honest has been in a long slow decline. Example: The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, the days are gone that any team in the state could win that tournament, now it has become the same power schools year after year. That does not bode well for a sport that promotes itself to be for everybody. It's just for the rich.

You can play soccer in just about every geographical area in the world. You can play Hokey in Antártica and North Pole without an ice rink.
That’s actually not even the reason why Hokey is losing popularity. The real reason is that people can’t afford it and the NHL is making bad marketing and broadcasting decisions.

Only for kids with rich parents. In my day the gateways were street hockey and floor hockey in gym classes. Now they both dont exist or barely where i grew up. Then u got the crazy equipment prices. When more ppl play then u get more viewers.
Oh btw would be nice of canlan to redo their ice from time to time. I feel like skating on glass because of barely any top ice or there are so many ruts.

Hockey got locked up in tactics back in the 90's and too many of the games are not nearly entertaining enough. There aren't many WOW type of chances per game.
The stars are not much better than the worst players in the league so their shineability are not really bright enough to catch non hockey fans' eyes too much. Sure, MacKinnon, McDavid, Kucherov are great in the eyes of real hockey fans, but since we are talking about how to get the not really common hockey fans to watch, it just becomes 10 random guys on the ice at a time. And the 5-10 exciting players are spread over 32 teams so they aren't even in the same games very often. And they are even swapping with a bunch of other guys all the time so they only play a third of the game.
The tempo while playing is high, but those 10 per cents of difference between your McDavid and your 3rd liner is not making a non hockey fan's heart beat so they just want more, more, more. And even if they might get carried away once in a while there's a stoppage on play, a power break, a VAR break or something taking down the pulse over the following several minutes with no action. You have bad odds of getting a chance to get fired up over this game these days.

Been on the decline since Bettman took over. The owners are happy due to short term cash infusion from excitement about relocations and expansion fees, but Bettman is killing the sport and the NHL marketing is doing a disservice to the game. SOCCER/FOOTBALL HAS TAKEN OVER 4TH PLACE IN north American sports and hockey is becoming irrelevant.

Luckily not the same for hockey here in Europe. I am Norwegian, and hockey is really a growing sport here. And I know in the neighbouring countries, Finland, Sweden and Denmark, hockey is growing and doing well.

It's much easier to grow when the initial base isn't too large and I don't mean that disrespectfully. Also, Norway is one of the richest countries in the world so while the cost of participating is significant, it's not prohibitive.

I can play any sport here anytime of the year except hockey. 🏒
    Nuff said. 😂
Hockey is my favourite sport. The plays, the hits, the fights.
The rivals. Yes, 70s to 90s, quite good. Now, too many teams to track. I used to watch all the replays. Now few. I can name about ten current players. I used to but Center Ice but found most games I wanted to watch were not included. Yes, you don't get to watch ALL the games of your favorite players. This is about money, not caring how many watch or care. My team will never win tge cup again so why continue to watch and pay to see a few allowed games for me to watch? Worst marketing of any major sport. NHL will voting to expand because of the fees to join the league.
