  • Virtual Therapy: VR is taking off in the film and gaming industries, and now the medical profession are taking interest. New software is helping patients around the world to relieve mental health conditions like PTSD and Alzheimer's.
At Oxford University a new study has phobia sufferers immersed in claustrophobic or stressful situations. Professor Daniel Freedman explains, "After just 30 minutes of VR...there were large reductions in paranoia". As a sensory stimulator, carers say Alzheimer sufferers enjoy reduced agitation when using the therapy. Trialed in 50 US hospitals, it has also become a key tool in treating soldiers with PTSD.

I think that VR has potential in treating depression and similar mood disorders as well. I just got out of a psychiatric hospital a month ago, and shortly after I got out my mom got me an oculus quest 2 as a belated birthday present. My psychiatrist has been telling me that I need to start regularly exercising for over a year now, and I still haven’t done it because I have trouble finding the motivation. When I got my VR headset I bought beat saber, and it’s been such a great help in getting me to exercise. Playing beat saber gives me a pretty killer cardio workout, and because it’s so fun and addicting to play I’ve started playing it for at least 30 minutes pretty much daily. I didn’t get ANY exercise before this. Because of VR technology I’m actually staying active (during a very difficult time in my life at that, I’m currently in the process of switching antidepressants, so my symptoms are pretty bad).
I think it has serious potential in motivating people with depressive disorders to exercise, as exercise is proven to help depression. It’s been an awesome motivator for me.

I lived with undiagnosed PTSD for many years, it caused severe social problems. Every attempt I made to socialise in the real world, always went horribly wrong, it resulted in a severe PTSD episode, which for me, involved blackouts. I have since entered the world via social media, I was able to learn to socialise from the safety of my room in groups on Facebook who have also lived with a mental health condition. I am now able to socialise in the real world more successfully. I still have a ways to go and have yet to experience dating, but I now feel I have a chance to achieve this yet.

Big fan of this technology, I really think this is the future of mental health support. Not quite sure the graphics are quite there on some of this though. If you've been on an oculus you can feel a bit ill if you don't have the frame rate/ graphics. The phobia work looks really successful though, even with todays graphics. I've tried the arachnophobia one and have it on my channel, well worth a try if you're afraid of spiders.

This would be a great investment for me and helping to overcome my horrid phobia of driving. This could actually change my life for the better by doing so. Hoping to be able to have something so investing one day.

    - "Hello. You are calling Dr.Jones' VR clinic, how may I help you?"
    - "Hi, this is Mr. Smith speaking. I just heard about your VR treatment and believe it might help me with my problem".
    - "What do you suffer from, Mr. Smith?"
    - "I have an irrational fear of hot, passionate sex with very attractive women".
