Absolutely remarkable; he experienced such a horrendous war as a child- one that would have emotionally crippled an adult even- & after it all ended instead of turning to drugs & alcohol he wrote a book and speaks out against war- this man is a testament to the human spirit!

When I was reading the book I could not even believe what I was reading. At first it seemed like a fictional story to me. But when you hear the actual man who went through it say those words... It breaks your heart a little. Just to know that there are some people who were robbed of their childhoods. The books is terrific but it is very sad. I have so much respect for this man!

I discovered this novel last year after doing a self chosen essay on child soldiers and was instantly captivated. Beah's voice in the book is incredibly strong, empowering and all around heart breaking. This has given me the utmost appreciation for the peaceful, democratic country I live in, as well as the motivation to help decrease the existence of even a few child soldiers. Just recently I joined a group (in association with War Child) that is working towards replacing bullets with pencils. We are looking to give young children the ability to receive an education, and more predominantly, the opportunities other than war that can branch from such. I have sheer respect for Ishmael and his courage to share this crippling story, which has undoubtedly changed the lives of many. Thank you.

Absolutely amazing story. Cannot imagine what it would be like to live through that trauma. So much respect and admiration for Ishmael, and it's brilliant how he can move forward with his life with his head held high. The story is written beautifully, and definitely makes you aware of what happens in other parts of the world, and that you should really appreciate the life you live in. More people should definitely read his book, Ishmael is extremely inspiring. UNICEF has saved so many lives, including Ishmael's, which is a step in the right direction.

I am a Sierra Leonean myself and live through the first part of the war. However, I did not lived through half as this guy did. He made me see the other part of the war that I thankfully did not get to see. The book gave me goose bumps, especially reading about a place I know so well. You are my hero Ishmael!!! I just hope that our country will continue to progress. Wish to meet you one day :)

Read this book when I was 12 or 13 and I must say that it really has opened my eyes I’ve always been interested in what’s going on surrounding child soldiers and war in African countries and I suggest if u liked the book then you will like the movie beasts of no nation. I was debating watching it because it wasn’t an official movie it was a low budget movie on Netflix but may I say that it is the best movie ever made on this subject let alone one of the best war movies made. I highly recommend watching this movie. I would not watch with children 14 and under even though it is rated r.

This video goes to show how super fortunate we are to live the lives we live. Some of you may think that he was a killer and switch off your ears. There is a saying in my country that goes like this "what aint meet you aint pass you." For those who think that it cannot happen in your part of the world you could be dead wrong. Just look at the political leader we are breeding. War and death justifies the ends so long as it dont happen here.

he went to my college and I just saw him speak at our convocation. He is actually very active in several organizations and has even worked with nelson mandela. It took a lot of encouragement from his profs before he even considered writing, and if it's any indication, he has lived in the US since he was 16 or so, and it is only just about now that his book has really garnered any real attention. It is really not so fair to assume so many things of him.
