    I had always had trouble with understand what bending moment really meant. Your diagram showed the BM as something arising from the internal forces along the length of the beam; this is honestly the first time in years that I have really understood it. I've read so many lengthy explanations in books and on the internet but not one gave a succinct and visually apt explanation as yours. Thanks a million and keep up the good work!

    I was fascinated by how you explained car transmissions, so I subscribed and looked at your page. I was so glad you also cover structural analysis because I'm a graduating Civil Engineering student and it would be good to hear about what I'm studying and maybe I can learn more because of how you explained them!

  • @kacmarik23
    @kacmarik23 8 лет назад +1

    3:57 -> section "C-D" you write moment equation [F1.x + F2.(x-L1) + F3(x-L2)] but I mean it is wrong. Because instead F3(x-L2) should be F3.[x-(L1-L2)].

    • @ThomasThorr
      @ThomasThorr 8 лет назад

      +Peter Kačmarik it would actually be F3[x-(L2+L1)] as it's the distance from the axial rotation point that determines the moment arm.

    • @kacmarik23
      @kacmarik23 8 лет назад +2

      +Thomas Thor Yes you're right :-D. Initially I wanted to write F3[x-(L2+L1)]. I guess I have the same problem as the author because my mind thinking about one thing and my hands writing other thing :-) I appreciate your suggestion.

    • @ThomasThorr
      @ThomasThorr 8 лет назад

      Haha no worries. I thought you might have meant that. It was a cumbersome way to approach the question by the author, in my opinion. :D

    Is shear force and bending moment diagram is unique for a given beam? If yes, why does different text books use different sign convention and diagrams?

    good ...can u explain y we need the sfd and bmd diagram?? which force causes failure of the beam

    • @Mech.Masters
      @Mech.Masters 9 лет назад +4

      Sfd and bmd is used to calculate the Shear stress and Bending Moment. Sfd and Bmd will give us the distribution of Shear Force and Bending Moment produced in the Beam. Once the Shear force is know, Shear stress can be calculated using Stress = F/A, and if the bending moment is known, Bending stress can be calculated from the Flexural Equation. While designing a structural member Sfd and Bmd helps us to know the Shear stress and Bending stress induced in the beam. These values can be compared with the safe bending stress and shear stress value and we can determine whether the design is safe or not.
      Now, coming to your question....If the values of bending stress and shear stress induced in the beam is more than the designed shear stress and bending stress, then beam is likely to undergo failure.
      Note that Bending Stress acts perpendicular to the c/s of the beam and Shear stress acts parallel to the c/s of the beam.

    Why Bending moment is maximum at a point where shear force is zero in the above diagram?

    • @Packlueder
      @Packlueder 7 лет назад +2

      The bending moment is the integral of the shear force with respect to the distance, x. So as shown by the video when the shear force is constant the moment is linear , when the shear force is linear the moment was quadratic, and so on. This means that the shear force is the derivative of the moment, therefore, when the shear force (the derivative) is at zero, the moment must have reach either a local minimum or maximum.
