The reason we have a lot of sub shops in the us isn’t because of hot weather. Rather, in the 1800s and 1900s a lot of people from Europe immigrated to the us to start a new life. A lot of immigrants brought their culture to the us with them especially food. As such Italian immigrants who settled in and around the New York area as well as the Midwest began opening local delis where people could eat authentic Italian food including subs and pizza

Fun fact, when the original KFC guy sold out due to being unable to run the business anymore came back to have some of said chicken, he said the chain management had ruined it, and proceeded to go on a tear over it, the chicken was tough, the batter was burnt, and so much more, and all those changes were made for the sake of "Speed" that RUINED his original recipe. Not to mention we're apparently still with a recipe/set up that reduces the quality of the food from KFC's original form.

Braum's is WONDERFUL!! I used to go eat at Braum's for lunch every day in high school. Back in the early 80's, you could get a hamburger, fries, and a Coke for $2.10! Okie here and Braum's is actually amazing. I honestly eat burgers here more often than I get ice cream. They also have chicken strips that they serve with white gravy and its soooo good on both the chicken and fries. You can get shakes for drinks with no additional price on meal. And they have the best limeade I've ever had.

We usually got the shakes with all our meals, but if we needed a more liquid drink (because the shakes are so thick) we always go for the cherry limeade. They are made just like Sonic makes them - with sugar syrup, fresh squeezed limes, real cherries and soda. I've seen them use Sprite and I've seen them use carbonated water, like seltzer water. Either way, they are delicious!
Sonic has amazing drinks too, and you can add any flavors to any soda - real strawberries and vanilla in Dr Pepper or their strawberry lemonade with extra strawberries and lemon halves, put any slush flavors in a soda, etc. I used to work there and tried different combinations every day (our drinks were free). It sounds weird but tastes delicious!

@33:40 - A "Smash-Burger" is a ball of meat placed on a griddle/grille to cook, but after placing will immediately have a flat object like a spatula placed on it, and weight is pressed down on the spatula to "smash" the ball into an ultra-flat, wide burger patty to develop a perfect outer "crust" in it's own oil, and cook through quickly, yet remain VERY juicy. Also, yes, (if they mention it) the fried cheese curds, DO squeak as you chew. Bone conduction from the teeth to the ears, I guess...

Taco Johns - I swear my go-to for a quick lunch is their simple bean burrito. Taco Johns Mexican food is better than about any sit-down Mexican restaurant I've ever been in. The bean burrito - perfectly made, perfect amount of fresh onion in the refried beans, and a very good flour tortilla. They do amazing things with their Potato Ole's too, including a smothered version that will bust your diet, but soooo good. Their taco salad is awesome, and their house salad dressing is a wonder. It was created in Detroit by Sicilian immigrants who went to Detroit to take jobs in the auto industry around the turn of the 20th century. The wife of the couple missed her local favorite food, a regional pizza, so her husband brought home a steel pan they used at the auto plant to hold nuts and bolts for car making. I've lived in the Detroit area for a long time, and you're right that National Coney Island isn't fast food, but casual dining with table service. There are a few other Coney Island chains in the area, like Leo's and Mark's, and also many independent ones, all with similar menus. I spent some time living in New Jersey, and since their specialty is Philadelphia-style cheesesteak sandwiches, you can't call it a "sub", but absolutely must use the regionalism "hoagie". That chain has gone national. Culver's is an excellent chain that has spread beyond its Wisconsin roots. I didn't know that Taco John's was Wyoming-based. We had some in Minnesota. I've heard of Elevation Burger, but was surprised that Virginia's choice wasn't Five Guys.

I’m pretty sure “National Coney Island” is a play on “Nathan’s Coney Island” which was established by a Polish immigrant in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY) in 1916. I’ve never heard of the Jamaican beef patties supposedly representing New York. I’m surprised they didn’t mention Nathans, *frankly.*

@@The_Crucible714 Yes, it's kind of weird that Greek immigrants in the Detroit area called their restaurants "Coney Island", but National=Nathan's is very far-fetched. I worked at like 4 different locations of Tudor's. I like the food, but it does heavily depend on who is making it. The biscuits and sausage grave are indeed made fresh daily...sometimes more than once a day depending on business. And we also make the pancakes from scratch as well. The wraps are pretty good, though the loaded wrap is such a mess to wrap up. It tastes good, but dang is it hard to wrap. 😅 It is a good place tho. Buc ee’s is just a straight up, super Walmart sized tourist trap. The Knick knacks are cute but over priced, the food is just basic, the giant jerky selection is more of a novelty, and the rest is normal gas station shit. But you have to walk through a crowd of people like you’re at the fair, wait in insanely long lines, and try to find one out of a hundred gas pumps that’s open. There is no way in hell I would ever go to one if we had one locally. Even as a tourist I have no desire to ever experience that again.
But they’re constantly filled to max capacity and the owner makes an obscene amount of money. They do several billion a year in sales and profit is a couple hundred million. I hate the place but I respect the shit out of the place as a business lol.

Get a fresh-made Cuban sandwich (pork, ham, mustard, Swiss cheese, pickles) smashed flat (heated). You won't be disappointed. That Waffle House Museum is walking distance from my house. Though the FIRST is a museum, there is an actual Waffle House just down the street (very handy if you have sewer issues in the middle of the night and need a bathroom, NOW). A smash burger is pretty much exactly what they sound like and a great option for fast food or bars. You take a little ball of burger (usually 2 or 3 ounces) put it on a already hot pan or cook top / flat top with either olive oil or butter, then just smash it flat and thin. They are great because they can be easily stacked and they cook lightning fast (like a minute each side, depends on thickness and how done you want it). WARNING cooking them like this will create a lot of smoke, might want to have a fan and open window near by.
I was glad to see Culver's get mentioned, I was getting nervous towards the end. They seem to get overlooked a lot, for sure one of my favorites.
