Participants have to submit a list of songs that were important to them. That list is sent to all other participants 6 months in advance. So more than enough time, but the TV channel wants the quality of course to be good and all participants have a busy agenda as it is, of course. Floor Jansen said that she was extremely nervous to sing this song, as she does not speak Spanish at all. Floor did not say how many times she repeated this song, only that it took her a lot of effort. She did specify how long she and Henk Poort prepaired for their duet Phantom of the Opera. They rehearsed five times, mainly to synchronise the band to the more metal ground tones of their rendition.

I can feel that she worked hard the lyrics because there are words that she has a perfect pronunciation. Since Floor doesn't speak Spanish she just learned to sing this song phonetically, although she of course also learned the meaning so she could put in the emotional performance. She did translate two of the three Dutch songs she sang on the show to English so it was a bit surprising that she didn't translate this one, but I guess she saw it as a challenge to overcome.

Only metal fans knew who Floor was in her (my) own country the Netherlands......this show finally blew her up to the proportion she deserved for so many years. Easily our best singer and nobody knew.
Last november we saw her (again) with Nightwish and the mother of one of my friends, 73 year old grandmother, asked if she could come if one of us somehow couldn't go.....concert was posponed 2 times and 2 years due to covid.....lo and behold, one could not make it on the new date, so the 73 year old joined us.....and loved the experience.
Funny, as before she would always be like that metal of you guys is way too loud. Exactly the thing Floor has been advocating for.....it's so much more than that. Now people know....at least some more.

Rolf, had a breakup and was told by someone (producer?) to write a letter to her about the breakup and they'd make a song from that (They then on the show joked that his letter was so long it was an album, not a song) and this is what the song is about. Floor learned it phonetically working with someone who spoke Spanish. As the show was in recorded in Ibiza, there were quite a few around, but I don't know who they were or when it was done. She does know Marcela Bovio who is from Mexico and lives in Netherlands and she translated another song from Dutch to English, working with her sister Irene.
The songs sung are either those by the guest or their favorites. Emma hadn't really written anything, and Henk does Opera, Theater, etc.
As for which songs from this? Yes! all of them. Also Rolf's version of "Hotel California", Emma's version of Floor's "Strong" and really most any song from any of them for any of the others. This was a very good season of the series. Henk singing country was too cool, as was his learning distortion for singing to Floor Disturbd's version of "Sound Of Silence".
Floor started with Villa Lied to open the show, and she and Henk closed with Phantom, everything in between was damned good.

The concept of the show is pretty much what you said albeit that the nuance is that each episode is dedicated to one of the singers, the other singers then give him or her their own interpretation of the songs that highlighter singer made, or was influenced by.
They do have a surprising short time to get the songs worked out, and eventho i am not 100% on how they do it, it goes a bit like this.
The singers get together with the band (individually) to figure out which songs they want to sing, then depending on demand, the chosen songs get a new or adjusted arrangement to comply with the singer's vocal and music style.
Then a few weeks later, but relatively short before recording of the actual show, there will be 2 (i believe) individual rehearsals of all the songs chosen by the singers, and get the songs to the level they want it to be at.
Then during the show recording, on the day itself there is a 30 minute window where each singer can do one more rehearsal in private, and that evening they go live.
I'm not sure how duets are done prior to the show.
ty for the lovely reaction :)

Very nice job. Always learn something when listening to you.
Rolf is the guy in the white & grey print shirt with the dazzling smile. There used to be a longer video available, with the discussion before the song and English subs. In it Rolf describes how his girlfriend cheated on him then dumped him. He was madly in love and all set to marry her apparently. His music producer told him that there's a song in this experience and to write him an email describing it. Rolf wrote him a book. ;) This song is the result.
I would love you to react to Floor's "Face Your Demons" from her solo show at the AFAS in Amsterdam as she uses a variety of vocal techniques to tell the story. She does it with a mix of pop and metal techniques for an audience that were a mix of both genre preferences. ruclips.net/video/4sg1SVQ_QvQ/видео.html
This entire solo show was pro shot and has good sound so all of the songs are reaction-worthy. Here's a documentary on the show: ruclips.net/video/Lnrswq-p03k/видео.html

If I may: consider checking out some of Floor's earlier work in the band After Forever. They never got the recognition they deserved (IMO) but they were excellent, and the album Invisible Circles in particular is exquisite. The Song "Digital Deceit" in particular is an absolute banger. I've been a huge fan of Floor's from another part of the world for over 20 years now. It's incredible that she's only really taking now, so late into her career, but I am glad to see it.
I don't know if you'll be able to find a live version of it anywhere, but this was a time when Lacuna Coil and Nightwish were babies as well. But there was After Forever putting out "opera metal" with Floor performing singing duties as well as music writing and arrangement duties way back in 1997. At this time, the only comparables would've been the fledgling Lacuna Coil (the band Evanescence shamelessly ripped off) and the baby Nightwish, as well another more obscure group like Tristania. There may be others, but the list is not very long.
The first time I heard stumbled across the Decipher album, my mind was blown and I've never looked back. Floor is an absolute one-of-a-kind talent! Though I may miss the "heavy days" of After Forever, it's so great to see her continuing to succeed and love music. She's an inspiration!

At the time there was Within Temptation as well. They went in a lot more soft rock direction later, but their first work is much more metal. If you enjoy the "heavy days" of After Forever, you'd probably also like the first two albums of Within Temptation. I agree that After Forever was underrated, but they were well received in the metal scene here. I actually discovered them by going to a concert on a whim. It was at a bar I pretty much went to every week anyway, and it was only 10 bucks or so. I knew it was metal, so I just gave it a shot. They really blew me away. I had never heard anything like that. The first time I heard Floor singing she was standing like two meters from me. I won't get that chance anymore :)

I love that Floor borrows the band from this show for her solo stuff, I mean they worked together already so it's smart!
Even when Floor sings a song that's not hers she just puts her spin on it while keeping true to the song. She's very very talented

So, as an opera singer, did you also checked out her performance for Henk Poort in Beste Zangers 2019 ? She did the "Vilja Lied" (the Song of Vilja) from the Operette "Die Lustige Witwe" (the Merry Widow) from Franz Lehar ? Also with a metal twist and singing the ultimate high tones at the end. You will love it !

Love your reactions! (Being honest, i only watch everything related to Floor/Nightwish) and yes this show (2019) is awesome! And awesome that you digged in what this sound means, you even heard Rolf version first❤️ Thanks!
Floor made a reaction about Ghost love Score, at Wacken. She tells she had to hold herself in to not overpower that song. It was at the end of the concert and already had so much energy. She said it is hard to soften but it is needed to express the song. She has so much control yes❤️ love the piece of Romanticide too, stunning example!

Floor had to learn the entire setlist for Nightwish in 48 hrs so it would not suprise me if she learnt this in one day. As for a new language even if you get the words right you can still sound foriegn and less aurthentic if your not placing your vowals and accent closer to a native speaking Spaniel would speak. But thats understandable it takes time and Floor does these things with a short amount of time.

Rolf Sanchez lives very closeby and sometimes i speak him, for example just outside the supermarket and every time he gives a handshake or "box. By the way, if you want to see more before and after the song where they spoke about and the correct lyrics, then search Highly Combustible Reacts with this song and then you can see much more! ❤️

When you know that she learned the whole setlist of the Nightwish tour which included Wacken 2013 (which has 15 songs, some she already knew) in some 48 hours, I'd say 3-4 hours would be enough for a single song, and perhaps add another hour or so for the Spanish language? 😂

My personal opinion regarding what to react to from Beste Zangers by Floor would be Vilja Lied. It’s closer to your own area of expertise and I’d really love to hear what you have to say about the rendition.

You asked for recommendations for any more songs from Beste Zangers. There are many to choose from, but one that stands out for me is Floor singing Vilja Lied from the Merry Widow operetta. She sings it in German, for Henk Porte. This performance is from the first program of that season's Beste Zangers shows, so it is the first time that most of that group of singers heard Floor. The expressions on their faces are a joy to watch.
You really get to hear some of Floor's opera chops in this performance.

To say that Spanish is not her native language ... is a huge understatement :) Floor literally does NOT speak or understand a single word of Spanish!!! Neither did she grow up like many Americans hearing lots of Spanish language music. So Spanish is to Floor a complete ALIEN language. Like Chinese or Russian. She learned the lyrics to this song purely based on phonetics. How the words sound. She of course learned what the song is about from the English translation but she did not have any idea what words she was singing.
