Want to make a Live edge cutting board? Check out how we made two live edge serving/charcuterie boards complete with some small highlights of purple epoxy resin!
As we said in a previous video, Miranda and I received some live edge slabs from my parents for a Christmas present. The first project we made was a live edge waterfall table (link below) but we kind of ran out of ideas for the others. After letting the slabs sit in the shop for a bit, I decided to challenge myself.
I grabbed a slab from the top shelf and made myself come up with a project idea on the spot! We hope you enjoy this project!
I think there's something for everyone to learn from this project. Especially if you've never tried to flatten a live edge slab. I'll show you how to use a router and a DIY router slab to get the board perfectly flat without a planer!

I'm a 75 year old Vet with a garage work shop and I love it. The way you explain things are easy to understand and I'm learning a lot from you. Thanks again.
I love working with kind of wood projects and the result is usually better than you would expect. One tip on the board with the two “straight edges” - you can measure and mark from the existing straight edge and have them come out parallel pretty easily, if you want to. It sometimes makes the storage better with two parallel edges. Additionally, there are people who actually put them in a dishwasher. When I’ve given gifts of these, I put a story with them (I mill and dry my own slabs), anyway, I tell them that they’ll explode if they put them into the dishwasher. It’s a bit of a chuckle, but they get the point. 😊
I just bought a slab to use as a cutting board yesterday. This is the exact information I was looking for on how to prep it for use. Thank you for the detailed instructions!
Another great video! It’s been really inspiring to see the amount of work you guys have put in to start this channel. Almost to 1k!!
Thanks Andrew! We are trying our best! There aren’t any short cuts to this and we couldn’t do it without the support of our subscribers! If you have any friends that you think might enjoy our work, feel free to share it with them 👍
I love your humor and the way you do your videos, I must make me one of those router sleds....thanks
When you use the syringe to apply the epoxy, can you reuse it or just throw it out when done? If you reuse it, how to do you clean it?
How do you prevent cupping after youve finished the serving tray/cutting board when using small slabs?
That's nice. As big as it is, I would of cut holes in both ends to use as handles. Carrying that with food on it looks like it may be a choir in my opinion . Just a thought.
Would HAVE, not would of. That's what the contraction "would've" means.
Looks great Eric! Nice job on this week's project! Can't wait to see what you do with the other live edge slabs!
Thanks so much for the continued support! You’re following us on Instagram, so you already know what next week will be 😜
@@SpencleyDesignCo 🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️ but I won't say so that way everyone will have to go check it out for themselves!
@@Jeff_Eats_Local We appreciate that!
Beautiful work but are those resins/epoxies food grade?
I would have used my incredible favorite tool the Dewalt palm router with the plunge base on those edges to found it over.
Hi Sir,
thank you for a great video
I have few questions
Can you show me the Router Bit you used to Make the block flat? (also what brand bits do you use ?)
What activator spray you use ? and brand super glue do you use when you use the activator with it?
Also
the vacuum is it wet vac or dry vac ?
any help with these questions I have is highly appreciated ...
Thank you so much for everything and one hell of a video ....
All the tools I used are linked in the description
Very informative video. thank you
I like to water pop at 220 and then hit it with 400. Makes it glassy. But that looks fantastic
As the click bait title states “I don’t know why people do this”.
I don’t know why you are are using the the router to cut across the grain of the wood instead of cutting with it. You would get a better finish doing to later. If you run a piece of wood through a planer do you have it cutting across the grain or with it? Same can be said with sanding.
Purple was bad choice. Otherwise great job!
Does it make any difference between wiping on water vs misting it on, to raise the grain?
Could you use a planner-leveler instead of the router? I think it would save time.
Yes, you definitely could! I just didn’t own one at the time
@@SpencleyDesignCo Thank you so much for your prompt response. You are awesome and your channel as well! So much knowledge, innovation, simplicity and most important common sense.
I appreciate that, Gene! Hoping one day this channel will be my full time gig
@@SpencleyDesignCo I wonder, where did you learn all of this and where do you get ideas for your projects?
I made two Q/A videos that talk about that 😀: ruclips.net/video/8W1YX3JNYkM/видео.html
What router bit you used to flatting that piece of wood
How safe is the epoxy? Is it food grade?
Have you tried Rubio Monocoat? I used it on some of my Olive charcuterie boards with great success.
I have not tried this, but after the first coat of Butcher Block Conditioner, you might put the slab in an oven at a low temp. for a bit and then repeat. Again, I have not tried this, so I'll let you be the guinea pig.
I’ll let YOU be the guinea pig 😜
That would probably cause too much drying and cause the wood to warp and crack. Especially after taking it out and being in a humid environment like a kitchen
I have a recommendation: if you are going to try to entice viewers to see your videos by starting a video with something like: "I dont understand why people do this", then I would personally really appreciate the clear delineation of what that particular statement refers to in the video and how you address it and what you think about it. That said, I have really enjoyed your videos as of late, and have admittedly learned some things from you, too. So thanks!
Use a wire brush drill bit to get rid of the soft wood in the live edge
Thanks for the tip!
Great video but I have a question. Is epoxy food safe to use on a cutting board?
You have to make sure your specific epoxy is rated to be food safe
Would love to see you build a live edge coffee table
We’ve definitely been thinking about that. Once this whole coronavirus thing ends, we are heading back out to our slab dealer and going to pick up some larger ones! No idea when that will be though 🤔
@@SpencleyDesignCo Neither do I
Are you able to clean and reuse that syringe for other boards?
You could, but they’re so cheap you’d probably waste more time/money cleaning them. Just toss it and buy more
👍👍👍Thanks for a nice and interesting video.
Thank you very much! We have a new project video coming out each Friday and hope to see you around!
@@SpencleyDesignCo You're welcome. Take care.
Same to you! Stay safe during all of this
Nice video where do you get the metal tipped syringe?
Try a store that carries any animal inventory. Like tractor supply
Why didn’t you just lower the router by instead of cutting the router sled sides?
Once again another click bait title that doesn’t deliver. Not that the video is not informative but the click bait that doesn’t deliver needs to stop. Not just here but everywhere. Something as simple as saying I do not know why people break out the sander when the router to soften the edge when a quick hand sanding can get the job done. At least you deliver on the title even if it is only a quick tip.
I agree completely... This guy got me 3 videos in a row 🤷♂️ how hard is it, really, to just title your videos to represent what you're actually doing
@@nicholicroghan3491 like I said in my comment he could have just easily said towards the end “I do not know why people break out the sander to soften an edge” while it is still kind of a cop out it at least delivers on the title. I have no issue with click bait to help drive views as long as the video delivers on that click bait in some way. Another video of his I commented on this exact same issue is up to like 40 likes and 9 comments. More than I have seen on any of his videos but the creator has yet to take notice or doesn’t care because the RUclips algorithm sees it as interaction and drives views to his content. But how long before people like me and you not watching his videos surpasses the views being driven to his content. I believe this drive towards views is strictly to try and reach that goal of becoming a full time content creator. Artificially driving up his numbers is not the way to do it as that will not be sustainable over letting it naturally happen and holding to any integrity he has.
Get a life dude 🤦♂️
When you say us who are you referring too.
My girlfriend, Miranda. She may not be in front of the camera in every single video, but she always helps film and build projects
Wait. So you're saying people buy each of those cutting boards for $250 a piece?
High end serving board 😂
Interesting
Coming from the weekend diyer channel.
Thanks for stopping by the support the channel Esteban!
No way that is worth $500. Why are you lying? That's a $60 board at the most😮
I used to enjoy watching the videos but the titles are really annoying... To an extent that I will stop watching because I feel fooled. Not cool.
Im sick of getting sucked in by these psychologicallly misleading titles. Fool me once...
That piece of wood is shaped like that liberal state of California
