There are some great denman brush tutorials on RUclips. You can use it as you show, but at the end kind of twist your hair around the brush and pull and then shake the curl a bit. My curl pattern coils, so the brush defines and “edits” the curls pre diffuse. Works even better with a cast on the curls.

You should cast it so you don't get frizzy hair. Casting makes it much better. I love Hair Food Curl Refreshing to cast my hair. Casting makes your hair a little crispy after it dries then you soften it up with your fingers.
