How do you make kokeshi dolls? This video shows the process of making traditional kokeshi (dento kokeshi), along with a fascinating interview with the featured artisan, Toshio Takada. If you've ever wondered "how are kokeshi dolls made?", then please watch!
It begins with a shot of one of his pet birds (Takada-san loves birds!!!), and then we ask him a series of questions about how he became involved in kokeshi making, the master artisan he studied under, his inspirations, and the kinds of Japanese kokeshi dolls he creates.
The entire video runs only 11.5 minutes but it shows how a kokeshi artisan masterfully uses a lathe to first create the body and then apply a variety of distinctive colors and patterns. Once the basics are done, the doll is removed from the lathe and the artist carefully adds the facial features. The doll is signed on the base then re-attached to the lathe for the application of a protective wax coating and final polishing.
Toshio Takada is an award-winning kokeshi artist who creates traditional (dento) kokeshi in the Yajiro sub-style and using original designs of his own. He creates dolls in many sizes, from 10 cm to over 30 cm (4-30+ inches) and we've assembled a very special collection of his dolls in our online shop at JapaneseKokeshiDolls.com (including special items not available anywhere else!)

私は2017年から毎年、宮城県白石市で開催される「日本全国こけしコンクール」に足を運んでいます。会場で、高田稔雄さんの作品を拝見し、とても感銘を受けました。JapaneseKokeshiDolls.comで高田さんの作品が取り扱いたかったし、ご本人にいろいろ質問したかったので、去年(2020年)の9月に高田さんにお会いしてきました。
ビデオはたった11分半ですが、高田様のペットの鳥（高田さんは鳥が大好きです!!!）の場面から始まり、その後、高田工人がこけしを作り始めたきっかけや本人が学んだ師匠の話し、自分のデザインスタイルの説明、それから、もちろん作品のメイキングの映像など、それぞれな内容を紹介します。
高田さんは、伝統的な弥次郎系のこけしはもちろん、オリジナルデザインのこけしも製作しています。JapaneseKokeshiDolls.comでは、高田さんの特別なコレクションを集めました（他では入手できない特別なアイテムもあります ）
