When my wife and I were putzing around in Rome on vacation, we got kind of disoriented a little bit in some of those narrow streets. She was like "our Airbnb is somewhere south of us. Where's south?" So I pull out my Seiko Alpinist, hoping to save the day, and start fiddling with the compass. She looks at me like I'm the dumbest guy in the world, looks at her own time only watch and says "What are you doing? It's 6PM. The sun is setting to the west. There it is. So south is that way," pointing to the right direction. Compass bezel. So useful.
Great practical application tutorial. There's one stipulation I hear other people mention and that's to keep in mind of you're in DST or not. But, honestly, can your bearings be that much off if not accounting for DST?
Do you think a better step1 would be lining up South between hour hand and 12 and then step 2 pointing watch at sun? Doing it your way round seemed more fiddly.
However....the "halfway" mark you use to find "South", is different for AM vs PM. In the AM, you find the halfway-bisecting mark (south) going *clockwise* to find your bisecting point. In the PM, you count *counter-clockwise* to get to the halfway bisecting point ( that points to South). An important point to remember to differentiate morning from afternoon readings.
Great video. Not many watch owners know how to use the compass on their watch. I was relieved to see you weren't attaked by a feral Invicta. I have a quartz Invicta diver - It isn't so bad as long as one keeps his expectations of the watch in check.
I haven't seen a watch channel as informative and fun to watch as yours so even though my budget isn't ready for a new watch yet. For sure ima try to get one from you first.
This is a great tip. I'm getting a field watch, but it's good to know that I can actually do this with my dive watch. Pretty much anything with a rotating bezel, and this is easy.
Hi, I have been really enjoying your videos, and have just subscribed. I have only recently got into watch collecting. Ironically it started because I purchased a Seiko Prospex's scc703p1, which has the compass feature. I knew about how to use a watch as a compas before seeing this video. One of my favourite memories from several years ago is taking my son out and teaching him how to use a watch as a compass and then navigating with that alone on a weekend hike. It's what made me buy the watch.. and that watch got me into watch collecting.
Hey,, I've been looking for a quartz, watch for kayaking, I'm wanting a compass function. I've looked at the SGW100, GG B100, looking for the closest thing to a real compass but smaller especially height wise than a MudMonster I'll probably have already bought by the time you read this old reply but hey.
Invicta owners can play along too, get the invicta aviator available in 18k gold ion plating with compass. Of course it is 48mm diameter and 17mm thick with "flame fusion crystal"and msrp $800 real price $109 but ya know you gotta love invicta?
Does the compass ring drift out of position when not in use or does it stay put? My Seiko Sarg005 compass always moved the N off the 12oclock and drove me nuts when unaligned.
I do the same with my GMT and it's easier because you simply point the normal hour hand at the sun then the 24hr hand automatically points north (when you're in the northern hemisphere and have both set to local time), so you don't have to find halfway between anything. Then again, I guess if you're used to 24hr watches and know what position the current 24hr time would be on a regular 12hr watch, you could speed up the process on any analog watch. Oh, and don't remember if you mentioned it, but you have to use the standard time and not daylight savings, which throws the watch a few degrees off north. Not necessarily a problem for most usage and oddly on par with some actual compasses, but something to be aware of during the summer in certain regions.
I surfed in So. Cal. today and used my trusted XKS007, no compass was involved, however. It kept perfect time and can't wait to do it all again tomorrow. So long time teller!
I have been using my watch as a compass since I was a boy scout some 50 years ago - we learned it from a German army officer's handbook. You omit that the half way mark between the hour hand in standard time and the 12 o'clock position is due south. You also omit how to adjust for daylight time, and most important how much to compensate for the equation of time - on any date whatsover as needed to get that southely bareing super accurate, where a Breguet 3477 would lend such aid. You also omit how to use your watch to determine longitude by marking celestrial meridian transits which is the very reason why watches as the Rolex chronometers are made - not to be worn as jewelry but necessary instuments needed for surface navigation.
Well Jory I prefer the free H2O that comes out of My well. Full of minerals good for the body. LOL And when I walk out my back door I am actually in the back country. But it was an entertaining video as most of yours are. Good for the newbies to learn how to find direction. Yours is the go to vids for learning about watches. Thanks for that. There are some beautiful watches like the Alpinist or Hamilton. But I don't see spending $800-$1000 Canadian for a watch any time in the near future. I'm glad to see you have touched on some less expensive, quality watches as well. Thanks again Jory.
You are so freaking fun to watch! Love your Chanel! New to watch collecting and watch your show more than anyone else! When we come to So Cal would love to buy you dinner!
Anybody with a snorkel on their Jeep has to be an outdoors enthusiast. This sheds some light on your passion for tool watches. Nice vid. I have watched many videos on this topic, but where it becomes confusing is what to do if the hour hand is past the 6. Which side of the dial do you use, and do you still use the south indicator if you are splitting between say 7 and 12?
Yo... I didnt even know they made bezels inside whatches till saw your "What is a chronohraph " vid xD Thats so cool I always thought they were on the outside! Bravo for technology ❤ 👍
Another awesome video Jory, one can always rely on uber amounts comedic value in a Time Teller upload. Gotta say man whenever I get a little notification that there's another video on you're channel I'm there. You've introduced me too alot of watches that I probably would never have seen if it hadn't been for your review's so thankyou, weather they're my kinda watch or not it's great finding and learning about new pieces. And dude you're distain and sheer distaste for all things Invicta has never been more imposing 😂😂😂 even stray birds aren't safe from verbal beatings. As much of a passion and love you have for all things watches I feel it's become you're calling, nay you're responsibility to educate people on the wastes of precious dollars that goes into buying an Invicta. Loved the little hike too, some stunning weather you get over in Southern California, also.....rocking that hat Jory, definately the hat of choice for say riding on a camel across the desert or a jeep safari 😁👍
Thank you so much for this video! I'm on construction sites all the time in the most random, remote locations. So by knowing what direction is N/S, etc, I can know where I'm at on the construction site. Once I get accustomed to the layout of the facility, it's not a big deal, but it is nice at first when people are saying, "Hey, go meet up with Jim. He's on the far West side of the facility." Leaving you to think, which way is West? So thank you for this life hack.
I was just informed by a nerd Invicta owner your calculations were wrong just before I broke his sunglasses and nose... he said it will only work as a compass if you know the "real" sun-calibrated time in your time zone ( it could deviate with daylight saving and the exact location ) standard time will be the same in one specific time zone ( according to the Invicta owner ) but the "real" time depends on the longitudinal position ( he said just befor he cried for his mother )
Love the Wrangler. Been trying to talk my wife into letting me get one. I want a convertable so I threatened to buy a Miata for our family of 5 if she doesn't let me get a Jeep. Your watch is cool too!
Here I am, keeping an accurate, $5 compass in my daypack at all times, and remembering in which direction the sun rises and sets, when all I really had to do is buy a $600 BOLDR watch and start lining shit up, adjusting for differences in times of day, DST, etc. I definitely feel like the fool.
You forgot to say that south is in the middle between the hour hand and the 12:00 indicator in the clockwise direction before noon, and in the anti-clockwise direction after noon. In the southern hemisphere it's the other way around. Also, if you're on daylight saving time, you should use the 1:00 indicator instead of the 12:00 indicator.
Jory! I don't know how I missed this video, but I love it! Please do more videos "in the field" using watches in their intended environment! Maybe take a pilot watch flying, and a dive watch diving? Keep it up man!
Hello Time Teller. I love watching your videos all the way from Sydney, down under. Can you please do a review of the best diver with a compass watch? Perhaps best quality against price? Again mate, love your work. Please keep it up! Noah
im a dumbass dude..i bought a watch with an internal compass and dont even know how to use it..this vid really helped me out thanks bro..but im really more interested on your jeep..nice and simple build..
I'm not sure I followed your instructions but, I don't own a watch with a compass. My question is; I've noticed your quest to erradicate Invictas. Does that mean the Movado is a protected species now?
The Time Teller Yeah, i wasn't trying to defend the ridiculously ugly and flashy watches that they produce, i was talking about the cheap end. The ones like the Prodiver. I get that it's a submariner "homage" but there is no way to make a dive watch that doesn't look like it. Who even cares? It's a generic design and it's boring as balls but there is nothing wrong with it. Plus, it's basically a Seiko 5 that you can swim in.
Peter Boyarsky Don't stress over this. Own and wear the watches you enjoy. Most of the watches Jory is excited about, I think are big and rather over the top. Yet, he loves them and he should like what he wears. The beauty of this hobby is, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Peace.

1:06 it's confirmed Jory has legs
I like how you actually went hiking to demonstrate the compass instead of just making a video in your own backyard.
4:00 you're welcome
King
For anyone watching, just skip to the 4:00 mark. Otherwise you're going to hear about everything EXCEPT how to use a compass bezel.
I came across a wild Invicta once while in the woods. I had my knife on me but... it was just trying to protect its cubs. So I just left it alone.
You fool
I wouldn't go near an Invicta either
That Invicta bird joke, was instant like xD
Great practical application tutorial. There's one stipulation I hear other people mention and that's to keep in mind of you're in DST or not. But, honestly, can your bearings be that much off if not accounting for DST?
I spent 4 long years in college studying Mapping and Cartography .... my friendly advice : Use a compass .
Do you think a better step1 would be lining up South between hour hand and 12 and then step 2 pointing watch at sun? Doing it your way round seemed more fiddly.
Cool Jeep, glad you have that knife along in case of Invicta attack cause you know there would never be a Movado attack.
BINGO! Northern or southern hemisphere changes usage too.
Yup.
He did it backwards.....
I love the Jeep. Nice build
Hey bro what strap are you using on the watch
Great video. Not many watch owners know how to use the compass on their watch. I was relieved to see you weren't attaked by a feral Invicta. I have a quartz Invicta diver - It isn't so bad as long as one keeps his expectations of the watch in check.
"..In case a wil Invicta tries to ambush me ..." XD
Oh man, thank you. I came here for the lesson and got motivated to go outside.
Was the strap stock, or aftermarket?
I haven't seen a watch channel as informative and fun to watch as yours so even though my budget isn't ready for a new watch yet. For sure ima try to get one from you first.
Thanks for the book link Jory. I convinced my wife to order it for me, since she has a prime subscription. She's the best.
This is a great tip. I'm getting a field watch, but it's good to know that I can actually do this with my dive watch. Pretty much anything with a rotating bezel, and this is easy.
Do yourself a favor and buy any Rolex chronometer.
@@matthewburden9403 No thanks. I'm an Omega guy, personally. I have a Seamaster I like a lot. Not a fan of the overpriced, under made desk diver.
"This will protect me in case wild Invicta tries to ambush me on the trail." 🤣🤣🤣
Please keep up the invicta jokes
Invicta comedy ftw.
so a 7 minutes long video for 30 seconds of explanations.
My adventure is in the jungle could not really see the sun, is there any watch with magnetic compass?
Hi, I have been really enjoying your videos, and have just subscribed. I have only recently got into watch collecting. Marc from Long Island Watch explained this MUCH better. Save yourselves 7 minutes and go watch that video instead.
What you came for: 3:27
Doesn't the to e of day ex: Before or after 12 noon have an effect on true north location. ALSO, daylight saving time change things ?
Invicta owners can play along too, get the invicta aviator available in 18k gold ion plating with compass. Of course it is 48mm diameter and 17mm thick with "flame fusion crystal"and msrp $800 real price $109 but ya know you gotta love invicta?
Does the compass ring drift out of position when not in use or does it stay put? My Seiko Sarg005 compass always moved the N off the 12oclock and drove me nuts when unaligned.
Doesn’t drift at all because the crown is threaded.
How we used south hemisf?

Tell us about the shades?
this can be done with any watch that has a freely rotaing bezel??
Leonid Joseph: Any watch, period.....you don't need a rotating bezel to use this method.
Go anywhere vehicle... Still parks on pavement lol
Hello, where can I buy that same model? I can’t find it in the boldr web site.

I’m going to try that this weekend!

It's about time we see you outside of the dungeon. Great video.
What if you live on the equator? How do ya use the compass then?
Does this mean you can not use the compass on a overcast day?
Can you use it at night with the moon?
Cool Boldr, cool watch compass lesson, cool Rubicon, cool hat, cool blade, good humor and great video once again by you, Good Sir.
Jst got an Orange Land Monster with a super engineer II bracelet. Thanks for dropping the knowledge!

This is true in the winter. But it is off in the summer, because the DST. But you just have to count in that one hour shift.

What's up TTT. What year is your jeep and what trim? Nice watch, btw
2006 Rubicon. 🤘👍
What do you have against invicta sir lol?
Is this true north or magnetic north?
True

Sure you just dont need a compass because your driving a jeep and need it when the car breaks down and you need to find your way home :p haha
this is by far the best video on this :-)
If you think you might be fighting off something as big as a wild Invicta, a machete might be a more appropriate weapon!
My trick is while I look at my watch and try to point at the sun, on the other hand I open google map on my phone. Works really well.
Amazing video, I really like the outdoors location. Love the channel keep up the good work my friend.
Really cool how you can do this with any watch
Used to use a timex watch in the boy scouts and did this. Better yet, consider buying a $20 compass.
