I decided to go with 9mm when I purchased my Rock Island 1911. Like you, I have a lot of 9mm ammo and it was a no brainer that this was the right caliber for me. The plastic grips were replaced with traditional Rosewood grips before I ever shot the firearm. Mine has only about 100 rounds fired so far with no issues. I do keep it well oiled.
I've had mine for about 5 years. Runs flawless. I make all of my own grips so the cheap grips were not an issue. The safety on mine has always tighter than my 3 colt 45s. I can't say enough good about RIA.
I have had mine for over a decade and have enjoyed it. I got it in a trade for a Taurus PT92 after using the PT92 for a week of classes at FrontSight. I regret letting go of the Taurus PT92 but have enjoyed the Rock Island Armory 9mm and I do have nicer 1911s (Colt and Taurus PT1911).
Just completed my 500 Ed break-in period with this pistol. This turned out to be a fantastic shooter! Reminds me of my Springfield GI model 1911 in 45 acp I sold a few years back. The main reason for selecting one in 9mm was all my other pistols shot the same round and it’s cheaper to shot and lots of brass found at public ranges for cheap reloading.
i was in the military for the 1911 to M9 transition; the 1911's reputation for failure is completely underserved and was a result of the shear milage (and abuse and part swaps) they were put through, in less that 2 years most of those "new" M9s started having the exact same issues as the "old" 1911s; so, in a nutshell, if you buy a new 1911, and take care of it, you have a weapon that will be reliable for YEARS
My great great uncle (John Moses Browning) would hate me for saying this, but a 92 would also last a lifetime for a single shooter. I love my 1911s as much as my 92s. Both great pistols for what they are.
When I joined the Army we were still using the 1911 and that is where I learned how to shoot a pistol. I've been stuck on them ever since. I've tried a Glock and just can't get use to it. I have my grandfather's old Llama 1911 in 380, as well as a surplus 1911 in 45ACP, and a Colt 1991 in 45ACP. I recently got the Walther/Colt 1911 in 22LR and am going to get this 9mm 1911. I'm a bag man at 6'6" and in a wheelchair so I can use a full frame as an EDC, currently using my Colt 1991 and a Kimber micro 9.
have had mine for about four years now. Love to get it out to the range or out plinkin. What a great gun. Thanks for the video!! Budget/no budget .... is just a terrific choice regardless. I did get some rosewood checkered grips. Makes it look great. Oh, the original mag was awful.... so replaced with Wilson Combat (several actually) mags.
This is the exact 1911 I want, only I'll put a beaver tail and commander hammer on it. I don't much like the Novack sights on the Ultra, but I would like a nice set of enlarged GI style sights with rear white dots and a single green tritium or fiber optic pipe in the front. I also like RIA's plain smooth wood grips over the black rubber ones. Might seem like a lot of trouble vs just buying an Ultra, but there are subtle differences.
Camera filter looks good. Constructive criticism: Regarding the first "table talk segment", if the cameraman wasn't shaky or the camera was in a stand video would be more appealing to the viewer.
This is my edc at work runs hollows fine an I’ve shot a couple fmj an it is just a blast wish It had better sights for night time but that’s a later thing ima keep her classic an I’m glad I don’t have to worry about it to jam it’s always good to go
@@BeeRadicaI It's a solid firearm. Little on the big side to CC, it's weight and caliber makes the recoil very smooth and easy for a beginner to learn the basics like I did with my brother. Putting some red nail polish on the front sight is a good call, and I bought a rubber wrap around grip which makes the gun feel amazing to hold and totally recommend. For extra mags I have found that Mec-Gar is by far the best option for your spares. Put probably 500-600 rounds through it hasn't jammed once. It comes heavily oiled and works like a charm right out of the case. Overall I recommend this gun to 1911 Enthusiasts, beginners, and people that want to teach others how to use guns.
I bought the ria in 10mm fs gi style at rural king in 2021 for 409 dollars and have shot a couple hundred rounds through it and no problems, I'm impressed with it , ammo is pricey but well worth it. Great Video
@@BeeRadicaI Awesome!! I did buy a bunch of mecgar 10 round mags. I have not had any issues with this pistol. Works 100% . My boy and i have only put a little over 900 rounds through it. Tgis has became their favorite pistol. To shoot on our range days. Definitely going to buy more.
I have that same gun. Did you also have a problem chambering a round if you put 10 rounds in the magazine the first time you shot it? That was the only problem I had with mine, I got some Wilson’s and it runs flawlessly
I did not have that issue. I did experience the mag catch blocking me from inserting a mag, unless I pressed in the button. After a few mags it was fine. I assume there are just some quirks that come from manufacturing that really solve themselves. As I haven't had any issues since then. Mind you with some Wilson's I bet it's even better .
My 80% RIA 9mm doesn't care for the Fiocchi 124gr FMJ TC shells. I think they're a tad too long and not high enough velocity. But the sights are on the money with 124gr. 115gr shoot low. But for $400, it was worth it for a practice 80% build. I suppose if I put a lighter recoil spring in that would solve the problem.
I have the exact same gun except I never get the rock island's that have the non-removable sights. Mine is the same gun but mine is ambidextrous safety full length guide rod and the sights on the slide are milled out so if I wanted to put night sights on I could. Excellent video. Awesome gun.
I have shot both but not back to back to give a definitive answer to your question but I want to say the RIA 9mm is a little more snappy. And I shoot mainly 147 grain 9mm subsonic loads.
I think the rock island is the best on the market. You should look up the video on Filipino ghost guns, and the talent of these guys, is unbelieveble. They are so good they can make one using on hand tools. So, with the proper equipment, I don't think you can beat them.
What? I have heard for the old Browning style extractor, if a little too tight, dropping the slide with a round already in the chamber could break the extractor and that dropping the slide on an empty chamber could wear the sear but never damage the extractor dropping the slide on an empty chamber. I think Brownells Smyth Buster covered the former.
If mags are $30 each why not buy Wilson combat 9mm mags instead for a couple more bucks? In my experience mags are the biggest source of malfunctions, and I've had Wilson combat .45 mags that have worked perfectly for a decade
Not very familiar with 1911’s. Am I seeing that right that you have a grip safety and can also use the thumb safety as well? Can someone explain what the purpose for that would be?
The original 1911 design did not have a slide thumb safety and relied only on the grip safety to keep the trigger from dropping the hammer. Being that the platform was in consideration for military use, a required feature was the inclusion of the slide thumb safety.
remember better a hit with a nine that a miss with a 45 there great guns I prefer the GI models. PS you want to carry full size for summer a large blackhawk gun fanny pack it will hold a 1911 and a 92 and 96 with be able to carry an extra mag enjoy
I bought the 1911 22 magnum off of Rock Island armory. The gun was a piece of junk. It failed to eject I paid $530 for this gun in on a trade-in I only got $200. The sites were fixed you couldn't adjust them. The gun was terrible you couldn't even zero it in.
I'm going to have to do a review on this guy's review first off there is no such thing as an entry level of gun they all shoot a projectile through it just the same as the next gun the only difference is features like decock handle number of rounds in a clip for him to sit here and say that's an is an entry level review how could the number one gun ever produced be an entry level in any chamber ground just doesn't make any sense to me I'm sorry but thumbs down for this video
jackoldoes all but low end camera, buy a high definition cam damn it, study how to use color contrast you held a black gun ,common sense use white blanket as your background! i respected a lot the rock island armscor guns i have 2 1911 9mm and 45acp gi fs std a1 the 45acp was made in manila philippines and the other one a new production 9mm was made in usa!
1911's are my favorite pistol. One thing I've noticed. Most $500 1911 do just as aswell as a custom big $ 1911.

I'm not a big Fan of 9mm , but, it will be the last ammo to become unavailable.
Also the 1911 is the perfect sidearm in any chamber.

1911s carry really well in a shoulder holster, it distributes the weight well
If Rock Island start manufacturing their pistol in the US,it will not be a budget gun anymore.
I'm ok with Philippines or wherever. It's been a global economy for 500 years.
It started, search for RIA 5.0 made in US
got one....great entry level 1911. Great value for those looking for a 1911. 9mm is affordable to shoot/train with too.
Camera filter looks good. Constructive criticism: Regarding the first "table talk segment", if the cameraman wasn't shaky or the camera was in a stand video would be more appealing to the viewer.

The recoil impulse on a 1911 in 9mm is the best in the business.
Great review, sharp and to the point.

The grips that came on mine feel great.
Don’t forget about the half cock safety also, it helps eliminate the use of the thumb safety and in my experience is faster than the thumb safety

Excellent review sir!
I have always wondered……How would the recoil of a 1911 in 9mm compare to the recoil of a CZ-75B chambered in 9mm? Anyone know?
I've shot the cz p-07 duty and a Springfield ro lw 9mm commander and and both have their pluses and minuses both are smooth though
I have shot both but not back to back to give a definitive answer to your question but I want to say the RIA 9mm is a little more snappy. And I shoot mainly 147 grain 9mm subsonic loads.

My new one is no good with 115 or 124 gr. way off, might be better with 147 gr.
