- Join me for my biggest solo trip yet. After my friends get stuck in lockdown, I decide to head out on this epic hiking and camping trip alone. I hike more than 20 km across the sandstone plateau. I camp high on the cliffs above an ancient gorge in one of the most amazing places I have ever been. I get to watch both sunset and sunrise. I make the perilous descent through very tricky country into the gorge 500m below. I set up my tent and camp next to a crystal clear water hole and find a fossil from Gondwana land. The next day I walk all day upstream through the gorge in what is probably the best day of bushwalking in my life. I make camp exhausted, but fulfilled and happy. The next day I make my way out, but not before a big swim through a tricky section of the gorge. One of the most epic adventures I've had. I'm hungry for more and cant wait to get back.

Cost and Mountain Walkers - on my trip I met a group from the Coast and Mountain Walkers bushwalking club. I had a great time chatting and enjoyed walking a small section with this group. If you want to get into bushwalking and camping, a club like this might be worth a look.

What an epic trip mate! Absolute gorgeous country. That hike down from the cliff to the creek looked brutal. That's what I've noticed post fires, is that the regrowth, whether it be weeds or wattle\ eucalypt saplings can be so dense, it makes life hell at times. But that river walking looked amazing. I gotta get myself there one day! Thanks for all the effort you put into making the video. I know it wouldn't have been easy.
Absolutely stunning scenery and the sheer physicality of your trek amazes me!
Great video Eric, looks like a great place 👍
Such an awesome trek! I never get sick of looking at cliff footage because seeing them through your camera is the only time i'll ever experience them! Great work!
That rock at 1:13:28 was amazing!
Seeing that acknowledgement of country on the front was really lovely! The old ones will be grateful!
Wow, great adventure👍 Really loved that day 2 camp👌
Yeah that camp was sweet! Unfortunately the rains have washed away most of that gravel bank this year, but still a nice camp to be had on the opposite bank. Cheers Erik
Wow, wow, wow. What an awesome adventure, thank you. The effort taken to bring us along in such terrain, epic. Just epic. Loved it 🙌.
Really enjoyed this! I have a dose of the Covid so in the bedroom at the moment trying not to give it to the family. Just what the Doctor Ordered for me :), thanks for sharing!
Great video! We encountered those same weeds on an M to K trip in the blue mountains after the fires and floods a year ago - over head high and seriously hard going! Campagnoni Pass and Belloon Pass are probably almost impassable now. I did some research and believe they are the native "incense plant'. I shudder whenever I encounter them now!!
Great to see a new video. A great way to wind down on a Sunday evening. 👍
Eric, that was great mate. Awesome scenery, spectacular views and the water was gin clear. Thanks for the effort and sharing the journey.
Just come across your channel. Awesome achievement, and what incredible scenery!
I'm lost for words Erik... what an epic, EPIC adventure! 🙌
What a stunning gorge and that view up top is to die for!
Even though the descent down to the creek was a bloody hard and precarious slog, it was so worth it in the end and boy, what an amazing walk/wade/swim through the creek too!
I thoroughly enjoyed the video Mate and so glad you shared it with us. 👍
You've thrown the gauntlet down to @scottysgonewalkabouts now! 🤣😂
Thanks for the adventure, can appreciate the effort it takes to trek through those high risk places! That's living life!
Dear Erik, I can't thank you enough for sharing these slow, beautiful experiences... being in a land blessed with abundant evergreen and semi-evergreen forests (southern India) where I usually go hiking (or trekking, as we call it out here), I have always wondered how it would feel to be out in the bush. Your videos also constantly remind me of this amazing book by Bruce Chatwin, 'The Songlines.' Sending you warmth and love from India...
Epic hike
Epic trip, great filming, looks like it’s a hike not for the faint hearted. Stunning scenery in the canyon
Love the "Step 2" reference! Stunning camp down in the gorge. Great to see a new video from you.
Absolutely epic. Sadly, way beyond my capabilities. Bad hip and knees. Thank you so much for making the effort to film as much as you did. 😃
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers Erik
Best one yet I can only guess at how much effort you exerted to make this epic video.... absolutely inspirational!
Thanks Neal, appreciate that. Lots of effort, but totally worth it. Cheers mate
Beautiful
That was fantastic Erik, the step 2 reference was quality. I'd love a bit of a gear breakdown on what you take, what worked and what didn't. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Thanks mate, I've actually filmed a gear review of all the gear I took on this trip. Will take me a little while to edit, but should be up in the next couple of weeks.
Amazing vid, production looks amazing, must of been fun to plan this one out !
Awesome video Erik... or should I say EPIC video 😉
You are one funny bugger... I was laughing out loud on this one, nice to see you getting more comfortable with the camera. And well done on getting through it all.
The vid wasn't disjointed, it was only when you pointed it out that I noticed it might have been. We all know you can't film everything, give yourself permission to do a couple of hours without a camera, especially for safety's sake! Amazing to see how powerful flood can be, eh? Cheers mate, good one!
Good to see you back it's been to long.
Absolutely awesome work Erik, thanks for sharing such a great experience, the scenery and rock formations was absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing it.
Cheers and stay safe
I am very jealous.
I have not had the chance to do multi day hikes apart from Christmas and Easter because of work.
Thanks for the video.
Excellent job.
Thanks very much, yeah unfortunately most of my trips are single overnighters over the odd weekend I have free. I'd love to be out there a lot more often too. Thanks for watching! Cheers Erik
Amazing video mate. The gopro footage was epic. Deserves more likes. Great adventure.
Very inspiring trip. That was a real life adventure. The footage where you swim through the gorge was impressive, just the sort of thing I would love to do. Well done mate.
49mins in... Did you have to have a wash and clean your underwear after climbing down that cliff side 😂😂😂😂😂
Enjoying your video I'm getting back to it now atb Daz
That was awesome, thanks for sharing. I’ve not seen anyone else on youtube do anything anywhere near as mental as that epic adventure.
Amazing adventure! Beautiful! So much work put into sharing ur awesome adventure...thank you!
Thanks for watching!
A sincere Thank You for taking us on that journey with You.
Very personable and engaging how You do the videos, in a way we feel we are there with you !!!
Saying this from the comfort of a lounge chair with a nice stout and dry feet.
Take Care...
What an amazing hike. Excellent footage did a great job as always . Thanks heaps for sharing. Well done.
Thank you
Bloody amazing mate - such a special site. Thanks for taking us in there.
Fantastic vid again mate. Really love your stuff. Watch it all the time. You and Scotty are the best, absolutely on fire the both of you. After doing a few lockdowns in Melbourne, I can honestly say your content inspires, motivates and helps me escape. The craft beers and grill cooking top it off - Brilliant work bro - don’t stop. ✌️
That's was pretty incredible. I've watched many of your vids over the years, and this didn't disappoint. It showed your valuable experience in navigating different terrains and risk evaluating your trek. It all came together well mate. What a great piece of country we have here. Ivan.
great to watch
Another awesome adventure Erik, The landscape looks similar to my neck of the woods on the mid north coast. Thanks again for your incredible hiking mate.
Spectacular country. I can see why you risk life and limb to get there. Lol. Love your enthusiasm and stamina. Great video. Thanks Erik. Cheers mate.
Thanks mate!
Thanks Erik ... great work
Hey Erik, I just binged all your videos. Lucky it’s rewatchable content. Love your work - you’re a top bloke.
I hope lockdown ends on time. Would love to see some more videos !
Hey thanks very much! Great to hear you are enjoying the vids. All going well, will be out shooting another trip video in a couple of weeks. Cheers Erik
Erik Epic it rimes, what a walk Erik. The footage is awesome, great video 🇦🇺👍..I can imagine your planning your next torturous walk.
Thanks Eric, haha yep, always planning the next one. Cheers mate.
A-maazing! What a treat, can’t imagine how much time and effort you put into making this video... not to mention the preparation time. Truly spectacular, thanks for sharing your journey with us. Much to our delight. 😁❤️
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
A full 1.5hrs of Erik Off Track !!!
There's nothing else for it, but to just watch it !!!
Sensational as always my friend....loving the addition of the informative reads..nice touch...been amazing viewing once more.🦘🇦🇺👍🏼
Clearly you are a St George fan, well done
Thanks Jeff!
Fantastic as always mate!!!!!
Wow....Nice work again Erik💪❤👏
Not much to say but truely impressed mate. That’s some next level stuff. Glad you didn’t have to climb the same way out.
Ha, you and me both - thanks for watching!
Loved it ,thank you. Those views are amazing except for the flies. That last 10 k's back to the car must have been fun !
Thanks Brian, definitelyamazing views! Yep the slog back to the car was even more fun after I tripped on a burnt shrub stump and smashed my phone on a sandstop outcrop. That was about 50m into the last ten KMs LoL.
Really enjoyed this video mate, especially your honesty about the whole experience. Some of the weeds you mentioned on the way down (the tall broad leafed fragant plant that looks very out of place) is actually a native incense plant. They flourish after bushfire and hopefully disappear just as quickly. Thanks for taking the time and energy to make this on what looks like a pretty taxing trip.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the info on the native incense plants. The more I learn, the more I realise a lot of what I think are weeds are actually native plants, really cool - especially in a place like this! Cheers Erik.
Great video Erik, such a gorgeous country we live in.
Envious of those who have explored the beauty of Australias gorges.
I've got a few hiking videos if you have any time to watch! Cheers - Caleb
Wondering why you can’t share where it is??
A great view of so many possibilities 🙂 interesting video I did wonder what that pass down was like 😬
Haha indeed! Yeah tough way down for sure. The climb down from the bottom of the pass, is worse than the pass is self. Might try the creek next time. Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing. I actually saw both Gorge videos ( the one from 3 years ago) back to back, having just discovered the channel. What a scenery. That climb down into the gorge through that narrow passageway, seemed fairly sketchy. 😳 I assume those are the bits you don’t show the loved ones back home or they never let you go again. Glad it all went well. Happy hiking.
Haha thanks Rob, yeah had an awkward moment when the other half started watching the latest trip and made it to the descent. Luckily I didn't film the worst of it!
Thanks for watching! Cheers Erik
amazing trip, ugh to those spiders! have you considered one of those kayaking backpacks for trips like this?
Yeah I have, although not recently. Too heavy from memory
Well done, that was epic. Our bush is So beautiful.
Have you considered using gopro straps?
I have a head and chest strap, easy to use and no having to holding it.
Great country, fantastic camera work, Thanks a lot for sharing with us. One thing that occurs to me, though. I've never seen or heard u mention the possibility of using one of those netting hat things to help with the flies -- which on this trip seemed particularly BAD! I'd be interested in your comments on that??
I certainly wish I had a netting hat on this trip. I used Bushmans bug spray and that just enough to keep them at bay. Luckily only an issue up top and not in the gorge. Luckily, flies are not normally an issue on my trips.
Hey Erik...it's been too long. I hope all is well and we look forward to another vid.
Thanks Adam all is well, just busy. Have a couple of videos in the works - a gear review from this trip and a new trip video. Just don't have much time at the moment to edit all the footage. Hopefully can get something out in the next couple of weeks. Cheers Erik.
Very enjoyable, on a couple of occasions some years ago now I’ve done similar adventures into the Colo in NSW
one 12 hour day and one 14..
Thank you for sharing.
PS
Could you please tell me the make and model of the long pants you are using.
Leith.
Thanks mate. That pants are Montane Terra pants (I'm a large for reference). I've had multiple pairs over the last 10+ years and love them. They are comfy, tough, light and dry fast. Only downside I find is that the pocket zips open by themselves which is annoying, but not a deal breaker.
What kind of air and water temperatures were you dealing with on this trip?
Hi Eric, miss your videos mate. Hope all is well.
Thanks mate - hope to head out on another adventure in the next couple of weeks. Cheers Erik
♥
Epic video mate 👍 So much hard yakka going along the gorge on the rocks & river.
Did one a few months back and it destroyed me! Feel free to check it out if you have a spare 1.5 hrs 😏
Mob of emu's actually ;-)
Hi mate could you do a video on gps, navigating equipment you use
I remembered from one of your videos you use australian topo maps.
And you did mention you have a app$22 approx downloaded on to your phone
Thank you in advance
Hey there, I use Backcountry Navigator pro. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it is hooked in to a lot of the state based mapping platforms so you can download detailed topo maps and satellite imagery.
Thank you
So, what are the obvious reasons the location is a secret? Clearly its somewhere in the Blue Mountains but you influencers try to inspire and encourage us to go out and be in nature but apparently not in any of "your spots".
It's not a secret, but I choose not to reveal this or other locations. Most of the places I visit have very minimal, if any infrastructure and most are remote and require skill, experience and equipment to visit safely. I spend countless hours researching and planning and yep a big part of the appeal for me is to experience nature away from the crowds. But these aren't my places, they are there to be found by anyone.

We tend to forget or not realize the magnificence of our Ozzie bush. Thanks for reminding us of just how awesome it really is. Bushyboy Oz.
