Then Pikachu was chosen instead because they feared Clefairy would be seen as "too girlish" back then, and they thought Pikachu was more appealing to all (a mix of cute and fierce).
It would be quite interesting. I’m Japanese, ash’s name is Satoshi, named after the creator of Pokémon, Satoshi Tajiri. When Satoshi was a child, he would hunt bugs in his backyard. They were also the original inspiration for Pokémon, as the original was going to be a bug hunting simulator. So Caterpie would’ve been an awesome mascot!

@@yaboi841 There is a Pokemon Movie (The fourth movie i guess), watch it and you'll find out what @Tyler Lewis talked about or, do you want me to tell you (spoiler alert) ?
If anything the 4th Pokémon’s Pikachu perfect encapsulates the phrase “gained from someone he knew” because he knew professor Oak due to growing up in the area, so both the trio starters and Pikachu are reasonable options
Fun fact too is that Ash's original name in Japan was 'Satoshi'. Satoshi Tajiri was the creator of Pokémon. Ash was partly based on his childhood self. And when he was a kid he was fascinated with catching bugs, which inspired the premise of Pokémon.
Pikachu wasn’t a “fourth starter option” it’s like you said, trainers either catch their first pokemon or are given their first pokemon by someone they know. Ash and Oak aren’t strangers to each other, Ash was living in Pallet for his whole life and was even well acquainted with Gary, so it would make sense that Oak could and would give Ash a pokemon of starter level as a favour to Ash as a friend rather than as a professor.
Actually at one point idk if it’s an episode in the anime or a movie but ash goes back in time and becomes friends with a young professor oak and the theory goes that oak knew that ash would end up with pikachu which is why he waited specifically for him to receive pikachu
Exactly this, my guys like "You have to get given a Pokemon by someone you know"...but Oak giving Ash a Pokemon that's not one of the starters apparently doesn't count as someone he knows giving him a Pokemon special just for him...
Ash meets prof Oak in pokemon 4 ever and explains how he started his journey from pallet town when oak was on his own journey at the same age, Oak knew where and when ash would be born and knew to have Pikachu ready for ash, he even makes sure to tell ash that the Pikachu was special and not like the others in order to save oak in the first place. Especially when he's describing the main starters. Like, yeah, they're first come first serve. It's firmly established in EVERY mainline game that the starters are rare, and that's why the professor is the one giving them to you. Ash got Pikachu, an uncommon pokemon, bc professor oak still wanted to give him a Pokemon (because PROFESSOR OAK IS HIS CONNECTION) even though he was late, and because Pikachu was an asshole and oak wanted to find someone that could befriend it.
@@cartoondeathnoises8756This is literally it. Oak knew there was a kid left after the standard 3 were already gone. So he set out this troublemaking little yellow rat so he could offload it. Ash was supposed to get one of the starters, but he woke up late. His mom did her part to secure a spot for him. Bc, you know his mom and prof oak had a thing. 😂
In one of the movies Ash goes back in time and saves Professor Oak with the help of Pikachu, Professor Oak remembers this and gives Pikachu to Ash so he is able to go back in time and save him Edit: young oak travels to the future where he is helped by ash, ash doesn't go back in time
@@infebrisso all three trainers that got the starters just left their Pokémon’s ball back at the lab? Even ash has his as he tries to get pikachu in it multiple times in the first episode
You can really see the original theme of the story in that Pikachu moment. Here's this usual, everyday jankenpo triad of fire/water/leaf, where each beats one and is beaten by one of the other three. Ash, the weird, disorganized kid, ends up with a partner with a completely different set of strengths and weaknesses.
To add onto the conversation, Pokémon was basically based on a common Japanese childhood activity of bug catching during the summer. Making Caterpie the mascot would've helped tie that together. It also helps Caterpie is quite adorable.

Something to consider there are several ways to become a trainer you are given a Pokémon by your parents, catch one yourself, or apply to a professor to be given. Most trainers do option a or b some like Ash and Gary go for option c. My theory only three kids were approved for this Ash, Gary, and one other. Something I have long thought about is that one of the kids who was given a Pokémon wasn’t supposed to receive one. So when Ash arrived Oak figured Ash was trying to con him so he gave him a wild pikachu to teach him a lesson for trying to con him. Only for him to realize he gave a starter to the wrong person after Ash made it to Vermilion City.

If anything the 4th Pokémon’s Pikachu perfect encapsulates the phrase “gained from someone he knew” because he knew professor Oak due to growing up in the area, so both the trio starters and Pikachu are reasonable options
That catterpie episode was so wholesome.
Pikachu : Death Stares 💀
Onix with the ribbon is super cute❤️
Until you realize that the onyx is basically the goodbye gift from his dad before he went to go get the milk
Ash and Oak aren’t strangers to each other, Ash was living in Pallet for his whole life and was even well acquainted with Gary, so it would make sense that Oak could and would give Ash a pokemon of starter level as a favour to Ash as a friend rather than as a professor.
plus, with the Ash sent away, the mother comes out to play.
Actually at one point idk if it’s an episode in the anime or a movie but ash goes back in time and becomes friends with a young professor oak and the theory goes that oak knew that ash would end up with pikachu which is why he waited specifically for him to receive pikachu
@@mickys8065 yeah rewatching the series I sometimes think Oak had a thing for his mother😂

It's cute how he explains it like it's gospel rather than purely his own opinion.
Kid gets a pokémon, he gets rid of the pilachu and it learns to befriend humans. Everyone wins. I hate this kind of “theory” where the source material literally disproves everything in it. It makes the person look like they’ve never even touched the source.
That OG background music tho
Ash was supposed to get one of the starters, but he woke up late. His mom did her part to secure a spot for him. Bc, you know his mom and prof oak had a thing. 😂

You can really see the original theme of the story in that Pikachu moment. Here's this usual, everyday jankenpo triad of fire/water/leaf, where each beats one and is beaten by one of the other three. Ash, the weird, disorganized kid, ends up with a partner with a completely different set of strengths and weaknesses.
just like someone saying "gun" in rock, paper, scissors
Ahhhh the littleroot theme! The nostalgia hit hard here
To add onto the conversation, Pokémon was basically based on a common Japanese childhood activity of bug catching during the summer. Making Caterpie the mascot would've helped tie that together.
It also helps Caterpie is quite adorable.
But it probably would have made the series harder to market and less popular...
Pikachu was chosen because they knew it was a good mascot...
@@TheDeathmail how less popular?? Caterpie is no less cute than Pikachu. And there's lots more Pokemon that as cute or even more cute and stronger than Pikachu.
Ash knew professor oak explain that one for me. Smartass

*Clefairy would like to know your location* (Og Pokémon Story reference)
Poliwag Would like to know YOUR location! (OG starter in the "official" pokemon manga, and the manga came out before the anime - its called "Pokemon Adventures" and i highly recommend it - its amazing, but has ALOT of Graphic violence / gore, so, if your going in, prepare yourself to see pokemon die - in pretty graphic ways. See, the manga came out BEFORE they decided to "officially" make pokemon for kids, so the manga is aimed at Teens/ Young Adults - Basically made as a Shonen, in the same vein as JoJo or Full Metal Alchemist. Enjoy!)
I know your referencing "Pokemon Pocket Manga", but can we really count that as it's just a "gag" manga filled with sex jokes? "Pokemon Adventures" at LEAST has a good story to go with the gore - it's not just Pokemon tryna run away with the MC's "balls" every couple of panels, lmfao. xD.
BTW - the long-winded explanation of "Pokemon adventures" isn't for you - i'm well aware you know ALL about it, if your making even deeper cuts, like talking about PPM. It's just for anyone who comes across our conversation and gets interested about what we're talking about - just a lil context for the randys, lmfao. Just wanted to make sure you didnt think i was bein a dick - or dumb, in general. xD.

Lmao you mean oak just randomly gave one Pokemon to a kid looking somewhat like Ash thinking it was Ash!? That's hilarious 😂😂
If Ash’s main Pokémon is a Caterpie, that Caterpie would’ve probably evolved into a Rayquaza.
