Go to your local reptile shop and ensure that you have lights to keep your animals warm for the foreseeable future.

From what I researched, it seems that not ALL incandescent bulbs are banned. There are plenty of exceptions, including for things like animal and plant care. They might end up being more expensive, but they won't be completely gone.
True. There are some exceptions, but the list that zoomed out out that is included in this video, has some very significant bulbs, that a ton of the hobby uses.
While ALL bulbs might not be being banned, a lot of them are. This is NOT a great step at all.
@@NewEnglandReptile Ah, I see the issue now. Thanks for the clarification! 👍
@@NewEnglandReptile It's fine. There are all kinds of lights that will still be available.
@@lindak3030 while there may be light available, the effectiveness of lights comes in to question.
I saw this coming a mile away with their green/save the planet bullsht evil agenda. Meanwhile "they" still fly around in private jets etc
As someone who raises chickens, this will affect farmers as well. Chicks need a high heat and most of us use heat lamps. This is most definitely scary
those bulbs will still be made
This video has a lot of disinformation. Heat lights will still be produced and sold
They've been banned here in Ireland/Europe for years we just put in an exception for animal heating bulbs. Downside is if you were using regular bulbs to heat it's gonna be a lot more expensive, trade off is reptile bulbs tend to last a lot longer if from a good manufacturer
Yep I just bought one for my boa enclosure. Before the ban any bulb at the hardware store was enough and they were cheap. Now I payed 13€ for a 50 watts
@@ren2704 I get them online in bulk for my reptile room so I usually get them for about €5-€7 each now. Used to be €1 in the €1 stores but to be fair they did not last very long
Why are they banned
@@nikicarrie4071 to save energy because LEDs use a few watts for the same light output without emitting heat. Fluorescent bulbs are or will be banned as well but again an exemption has been requested for reptiles UVB requirements. Personally I already purchased LED lightening from Arcadia and will upgrade with a radiant heat panel next year. I'll save a bit of electricity then.
@ren2704 they should give us that choice I'm so sick of these rules and laws every day
I researched this legislation years ago, when it was first passed (but not yet implemented). To my understanding, “specialty” bulbs were all exempt from the ban. Bulbs used for agriculture or animal husbandry were explicitly mentioned as exceptions to the new regulations… Even novelty “party bulbs” (those blue, green, red, etc. incandescents they sell at Party City or around Halloween) were allowed. I don’t understand why ZooMed is facing this issue… Is it because of how they classify or market their bulbs? Is this just a “change the label” issue? 🤔
I think it’s important to be prepared but we also don’t want to create a crisis by clearing the shelves and hoarding bulbs when others may be in need of them. We don’t want another toilet paper crisis on our hands.
Amen
you are asking people to be reasonable, wich, generally speaking, is historically impossible.
Too late 😂
Remember toilet paper during COVID? Yeah…. Good luck with that!
@@TheConfuzed1that's the joke.
Reading into it, this ban excludes infrared and multi purpose bulbs such as grow lights. It’s really meant for household bulbs. I do not think that if will effect the reptile hobby but if it does, I’d just add another socket for a heat emitter and a full spectrum led light to be next too it. I do not know what led bulbs will put out the necessary uvb for a desert species but I’m sure there are options and on the plus side, ceramic emitters and led lights to last longer than say a mercury vapor bulb. From my understanding though, the ban isn’t going to effect those as they are multiple purpose and not solely house lighting bulbs
If this is true, this makes this video very dangerous and uninformed. We need to push this to the top
LED UVB is thought to be dangerous
I’m overly sensitive to LED’s and it triggers migraines with stroke symptoms. I’m a huge advocate for keeping lighting choices available. You’d think that incandescent lighting is as bad a cocaine these days 🙄
How do you react to florescent lighting? There are some people that are sensitive to florescent lights, due to the 60hz flicker rate. The light they emit can be harsh. Could you be getting LEDs mixed up with florescent (including CFL) lights?
I've never heard of anybody being sensitive specifically to LED lighting. LEDs do not flicker and put out very "smooth" light with very little heat. I have seen examples where the lumen output of the new LEDs is higher than the old incandescent, which could trigger light sensitivity issues with some people. Switching to a lower output LED and/or going with a "softer" light could solve your issue. Softness is influenced by the coating of the bulb, not the filament, btw.
I'm an electrician that has worked on a lot of lighting systems. LEDs are not bad for you. If you were to do the research to understand how LEDs work, you'd probably feel a lot better about LEDs.
All that being said, I think we should still have the freedom of choice for which lights we want to buy and use. There are times incandescent is better, like when you're also utilizing the heat produced by them. Government should have no bearing on what we are allowed to own and use.
@@scarletboa I’m still pretty sensitive to fluorescent lights as well. Anything that has a ballast makes me feel like I’m plugged into the wall. The output from LEDs and fluorescents cause excessive motor excitability which leads to things shutting off neurologically. Even my little iPhone I use for everything has a refresh rate at 60hz and it still causes my face to tingle. But the accessibility settings for light filtering and dimming is a huge asset. I’ve read about applying dimmers to standard led lighting and it can still cause problems.
@@scarletboafluorescent suck more, but the refresh rate of LEDs and the fact many of them are cold blue white still trigger my migraines.
@@lindsaymcmuffin it's not a refresh rate, it's simply the 60Hz AC cycle causing a flicker (120Hz, 2X the line rate) that's imperceptible to the vast majority of people, though it can be seen on digital cameras, often in video mode. We slightly offset our frame rate and the flicker goes away in capture.
This can be solved by using DC-driven LEDs .. aka "Flicker Free". Without any current inversion, there is no flicker. The color temperature of LEDs varies widely .. choosing lights that are not rated at 6500K will help tremendously.
If you want bulbs that simply screw into your existing fixtures and not wanting to deal with DC lighting, I would look into Waveform Lighting (company name). They make outstanding LED bulbs that are completely flicker free and come in 4000K and 5000K color temperatures so you're not dealing with the stark white 6500K that give you migraines. They also have a 95+ CRI for exceptional color rendering (this tends to be important in areas where makeup is applied or artwork is displayed). I don't work for or have any relationship with the company. My wife also suffers from migraines and these have helped tremendously. The bulbs aren't the cheapest, but with a 3yr warranty and 25,000hr lifetime, they're a solid value.
Good luck to you!
@@scarletboa "LEDs do not flicker and put out very "smooth" light"
If I could post a video right here to prove this statement false, I would!! My husband just asked me last week to replace my LED desk light because of this problem. Every time we use the hot water, my lights would flicker. It annoyed the heck out of both of us. I did replace it with a non flickering light, so you can buy them that don't, but to say that "LEDs do not flicker and put out very smooth light", is absolutely false .
It's stupid what the government is doing!! There is way worse stuff to worry about and they're focused on discontinuing these light bulbs!! Much love and support to the Reptile Army and NERD!!❤❤
its more the private industry wanting to ensure planned obsolesce by banning bulbs with long lifetimes. not the government. but whatever it takes to keep the criticism off private industry
@@clown134Except these laws are banning the bulbs with short lifetimes. Before Obama, most lightbulbs still had the 1,000 hour life standardized by the Phoebus cartel. LED bulbs last longer than most people own their homes.
Adding to this - zoo & conservation efforts, which the AZA/SSP (Aquarium Zoo Association/Species Survival Program) & UN (United Nations) should be also upping their game to say 'Hey, people may not need these lights, but these animals absolutely do to ensure both species survival, as well as the reptile industry. So - this is absolutely a huge thing!
It's not just homes that need these lamps, but zoos and farms - especially poultry farms. I think ones for animal husbandry will be allowed just not the every day "light bulb". Thanks for the heads up.
UK already stopped incandescent bulbs in 2019. There is some exemptions and that includes the reptile basking bulbs.
Can you still get CHE/DHP and halogen ?
@@Xandoscritters we get CHE/DHP bulbs and other basking bulbs. No halogen though.

@@busta87 conspiracy theories generate views
@busta87 Zoo Med was told by the department of energy there is no exemption for reptile bulbs and a series of bulbs are possibly banned due to the restrictions. Kevin did his research.
@@Strilla4 There is an exemption for animal husbandry. Reptiles are animals. This wouldn't even require a decent lawyer to win in court.
They've done this in the UK and Europe already - except there's the exception for reptiles so we have to get out bulbs are reptile stores - can't go to the local DIY store for bulbs
I don’t understand why the government has to be so darn stupid of banning something that is actually beneficial for animals to survive. I don’t know don’t understand.
I think they are trying to price out Reptile Hobbyists to try and kill off the hobby now that they realize that direct bans are falling flat.
Like I always say though: If were going on a list of banning invasive animals, the Domestic Housecat should be at top of the List! Amazing how quickly peoples tune changes though when you make the comparison to an animal they love and may own.
They can't help themselves, virtue signalling or caving to lobbyists. Choose one.
I hope they make an exception for the reptile lights. I have 3 reptiles that need these bulbs, yesterday i just bought 4 bulbs since i used my last one on hand. Guess I'll have to stock up like its TP in 2020! Thanks Kevin for letting us all know 😊
We have 8... now imagine NERD's animal count, zoos... all the people trying to do work in conservation of endangered animals. This is insane.
Dont reptile lights count under the "specialty heat bulbs" that are listed as an exemption to the ban?

Incorrect. Only some of them are. Please see the Zoo Med memorandum posted at the end of this video.

Zoomed is pulling a bunch from their line

You are extremely evil.
Hey Kevin, reach out to John Courtney Smith from Arcadia. Because T5's etc are also being banned but apparently there is a clause in these acts that they cant ban T5 that are manufactured specifically for animal needs, I would imagine that there will be the same clause regarding heat lamps too, it will mean that people wont be able to buy the cheaper lamps without pet specific branding, however I am in the UK.
If there are exemptions, why did the DoE contact ZooMed about this?
Heat emitter with a LED spot shining in the same area would give light and heat in the same place
Exactly plenty of other safe diy options too no need to panic it’s bad business tho.
Heat emitters do not produce IRA
This is exactly what i was thinking. Heat emitters and LEDs last a really long time, compared to these high end and disposable specialized lamps.
OMG, thank you for this video! I've been noticing a dwindling supply at my local big box pet stores....def going to stock up a bit
Incandescent and halogen bulbs have been "banned" in CA for a few years now, but only for household use. Specialty-use bulbs, like for heating reptiles, are still legal and readily available.
Been this way in california for a few years now. amazon wont ship them either. You have to buy "specialty" lamp from either a reptile/pet store or an online reptile retailer. pretty lame.
For everyone saying not to cause a stir where it isn’t needed… We don’t want anyone to panic, but this video is every important. I work at a reptile specific shop, and as of today, we can’t even order the bulbs we need for reptiles. It’s wise to get ahold of at least a spare.
They finally found a way to make LED's full spectrum for planted aquarium keepers (like myself). It took years, but we got it. I wonder if they could produce a heat emitter with LED's in it, so we could retain the use of our lamps without having to reinvest all new hardware. I only have one rainbow boa as a pet, so stocking up on bulbs isn't impossible for me, but there has to be a long term solution.
I dislike leds for home lighting in general. They are intentionally built with planned obsolescence. I've seen leds burn out at the same time within a day or two of each other. It's a scam, real leds will rarely if ever go bad. We need to boycott the industries when they make these products to fail on a set schedule so they get more money.
So grateful for everything u do for conservation and reptile keeping!!!!
Thanks for the info
Great video guys
❤ I don’t keep reptiles but here in the PNW we’ve lost our ability to use our wax warmers about 2 years ago. The ones (bulbs) they started selling are TRASH. They burn out so fast. I hope you all get a solution. I really do. My situation is a mild inconvenience, yours is life and death. This makes me so sad. ❤
All heat emitting bulbs can’t be getting banned tho, right? We use them for multiple reasons aside from our reptiles. We get bulbs for our water pumps and pipes over winter. I don’t know if they can be substituted or how to safely use them, but if I was going to ask anyone who I think would know about it for captive reptiles would be Kevin. I also use them for wildlife rehabilitation and I haven’t heard of this
You heard it now!!!!! It’s scary!!!
@@NewEnglandReptilenot to mention livestock! I use them for my Rabbits and chickens in the winter here in Canada. Which I use to produce manure and eggs for growing produce etc. this is going to severely impact farmers and their livestock
And that’s not even including what I use for my own reptiles… like my turtles end up in their pond for about 6months of the year getting the sun uvb… but I’m not risking brumating them so I use bulbs inside in the winter/fall. Most of the reptile specialty bulbs were exempt, except for specific bulbs. At least via Zoo Med. Not sure if other brands bothered to communicate with the DoE regarding exemptions. But the DoE reviewed Zoo Meds bulbs, and only a small number of them were not exempt.
Do we know the DoE's reasoning for the decision regarding ZooMed's bulbs that were classified non-exempt?

4:40 is the letter they're talking about, that mentions that the DoE wants ZooMed to stop making/distributing the bulbs they've listed.
In Australia, we already have heat lights designed for reptiles that are LED 😅 for years !
A simple search of the DOE website will show that heat lamps ARE NOT included in the ban.
Hope you'll do a future video with the correct information and include a mea culpa
The DoE wrote ZooMed with contrary information.
Crap!!! I have a uro who needs high temps. Thanks for the heads-up.
Maybe the future is a Ceramic Heat lamp / LED hybrid. Some company could create a Ceramic Heat lamp with LEDs around the Ceramic heater. That way the heat is there with light. 🤷♂️
LED circuit boards don't do well in high heat situations. A lot of people are finding that out the hard way, as there are more and more people with LED recessed lighting in their houses. In the Summer, when their attics get over a hundred degrees, their LED bulbs are getting cooked. Lights that are supposed to last 10-20 years are only lasting 3-5 years.
Source: I'm a Handyman who has spent more than his fair share of time at the top of a ladder, replacing LED bulbs in recessed fixtures.
Your best bet is a ceramic (or something like the Arcadia Deep Heat Projector) in one fitting to provide the heat.
Then an led spot light angled so the light beam hits the surface that the heat beam hits.
This way you're getting the benefit of the high visible light as part of the basking spot still.
In England, we still have basking lamps for animals but the price has gone up by a ridiculous amount after the ban
I use a heat lamp that is lighted that I buy from walmart that is used for keeping food warm, problem is they are probably to big and get to hot for some small enclosers.
I don't see why this is an issue. Reptile basking lights aren't the same as light lights. One is MEANT to produce heat the other is meant to produce light. If this impacts basking lights I will be shocked since they efficiently do what they should do so given sane regulators it shouldn't be a problem.
That's the problem - no sane regulators! I have NEVER seen an administration so hell bent on regulating us to death. When did it flip to we work for the government instead of the government working for us?
Be prepared to be shocked.
The problem is that the people making the laws don't know/see/care about the difference.
People in government are not informed. They make decisions which affect things they do not understand and they do not care.
Thank you for talking bout this Kevin, it’s already difficult to get hold of the E27 spot light over here in the UK and I’m worried as to what is the safest alternative for our reptiles. I’ve noticed that the price of the heat bulbs have been creeping up over the last 5 years and they do not seem as durable as they used to be so I’m needing to buy them more
Why can't they just have above heater with a light. The light doesn't have to be a heat lamp as long as the device it's on gives heat, right? Or am I miss understanding this?
That will only work in some cases. Having room for two now is an issue.
It has to do with the type of IR absorption. IR-A is the best and heats the core of the animal better. Incandescent lights are primarily IR-A casters which makes them perfect for reptiles.
IR-B isn't fantastic but is alright as an option. It doesn't heat the core of the animal though. Deep heat projectors are what is mostly used to produce IR-B and would likely be what replaces Incandescent lights as the primary heat source.
IR-C is pretty terrible and encompasses nearly every heating product outside of Incandescents and Deep heat projectors. To put it simply, if you leave the heat source you start to feel cold right away, and it barely has any penetration. Products like heat tape, heat cable/cord, radiant heat panels and ceramic heat emitters all produce IR-C.
If the animal never needs to leave the heat or is in a small enclosure/rack system, then IR-C is fine, but still not the best for the animal. There is a noticeable difference in the activity levels of the animals I have in enclosures with incandescent bulbs vs. the ones I keep inside racks. With the racks they are almost always hiding on the back side where the heat is on 24/7 and rarely come out. In the enclosures they come out to bask under the light for a few hours and then start to explore or move back to the cool side to rest.
A few things that need to be corrected.
Firstly. Look how Europe did years ago.
Exemptions were made for specialty lighting, ie Reptile husbandry. The same is in the works for UVB lighting. This in turn buys the hobby a few more years to produce the new generation of reptile basing lighting.
Secondly. Heat emitters, like Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE), Radiant Heat Pannels (RHP) and similar equipment that work in the IRC wavelength, are the most inefficient forms of heating that we have available for heating reptiles. They work in the IR-C wavelength whereas an incandescent basking bulb has both IR-A, IR-B and IR-C. IR-A being the most efficient of the three.
So, fix the exemptions and you’ll be fine, just like Europe.
I've already been having trouble finding incandescent bulbs for a few years now already. I used to go to Dollar General as they were cheaper but haven't been able to find nit ine there in at least 3 years.
3:57: No. At least for the ceramic heat emitters I've tried, they are significantly less efficient than halogen bulbs with a good reflector in the bulb. Ceramics get very hot on all sides including the back side which radiates energy into the dome. A large, polished dome can reflect a lot of that energy in the general direction you want, but a good bit is still lost into the dome (which is why it's so hot to the touch). Meanwhile, the shorter wavelength IR and visible light from halogens is easier to reflect and focus where you want leading to less radiation into the dome to begin with. Indeed, most of my domes with halogen reflectors are only mildly warm to the touch and I can palm the back of a freestanding 60 W halogen bulb with a good reflector without getting burnt. With halogen reflectors, more energy just goes where you want it.
I use to use heat emmitter bulbs until I found my first scalie daughter wrapped around it and the protective thing around it. I since have been using heat panels.
I think they’re going to wind up having to put a distinction in, because it’s not just pet owners, there’s a lot of industry, plant growing, food production. In the U.K. you can’t buy the old lightbulbs anymore for your home, but you can still buy specialist heat lamps from pet shops and such.
The Law of Unintended Consequences! You have to admire the spirit of banning incandescent bulbs from an energy saving standpoint; people won’t change and become conservation-minded until they are forced to. Still, for situations like this, they need to write in loopholes for reptile keepers who NEED the combination of light and heat.
All lights are going LED. It's already hard to find heat lamps where I live. My reptiles have heat tape or mats with thermostats now.
It's not just a problem for reptile keepers, eithers. I breed chickens and keep small brooders set up for baby chicks, too small for a large bulb. I'm currently using the last of my 75 watt bulbs for my chicks and when those burn out, I'm left with no options.
As a band-aid for now, get a ceramic heat emitter bulb (CHE) and use it with a thermostat. You can set the temperature you want and the thermostat will keep it within a couple of degrees of that temp.
Heat emitter with led lighting would work for most people that only own one or two beardies or a tegu but I'm not sure what the best idea for bigger operations would be
If someone comes up with a diy blue print of the lights you can just grab the materials separately
They only ban manufacturing, not buying, not importing. You can just buy them online from a manufacturer outside of the US, likely for cheaper as well. And it is likely that there will be an exemption for animal heating bulbs, as they are used to an insane degree in poultry farming. (And there is an exemption in all other countries that banned these types of bulbs years ago)
Can’t import them here
The rationale for phasing out incandescent lights is that most of their energy is wasted as heat. But in the case of a basking light the heat is the purpose, so it's not being wasted.
What about a radiant heat panel that incorporates leds to illuminate the hot spot? Obviously it would have to be some sort of DIY setup to start and it wouldn’t resolve the need for UVB but it’s an idea.
I use a heat lamp for raising chickens as well I use it to keep warmth for my well I drink water from in the winter
WTF!?!? I have those heat lamps in a special mounted fixture in my bathroom to keep me warm in the tub. This is bullshit!!! Thanks for the heads-up!
i do not have any reptiles right now, but even several years ago i was stocking up par38 halogen floods. It was easy to see that fewer places were carrying them and the writing was on the wall. I was hoping that specialty bulbs would continue. Super expensive, but a possibility.
heat emitter paired with a LED spot or flood could be used too. dual set ups. I think Zoomed makes a fixture like that.
Even if I have to upgrade my fixtures, if the ban is upheld, I will be getting bulbs from warehouse outlets that supply the food service industry. I can get 100 watt halogen type bulbs caterers use for keeping food hot. They can't ban those.
I know they're not the same, but you would be surprised at how warm some led bulbs get.
I've heard some people in the reptile community freaking out about this, but I'll be honest, I'm not quite sure why. From what I've read, heat lamps for animal care are exempt from the ban. And even if they weren't, we have other options for reptiles. I haven't used incandescent bulbs as a heat source since the 90s. If it's a reptile that needs in-cage lighting, I use either LED or UVB florescent lights paired with heat sources that don't give off light (heat mats, RHPs, CHEs, or DHPs, depending on the animal and enclosure setup). I actually vastly prefer to have my heating separate from my lighting. So I really don't think the sky is falling in this particular instance. Just my 2 cents.
Always can add further bulbs to banned list. Legislation is always open ended
yea the point is that the government shouldn't be doing this crap at all, infringing on our rights. It shouldn't be "well, it's not so bad, we can live with it", no it should be "go away big gobment" lol
I dont think reptile bulbs specifically will be banned or that we'll run out altogether. What has me concerned is that reptile companies already mark up the price like crazy. You could get the same exact light bulb from a pet store and a hardware store but pay double or more for the one that put a lizard on the box. How much higher is the markup gonna go when they know you dont have another option? I've had enough trouble trying (unsuccessfully) to get halogen bulbs since moving to California
I absolutely need basking lights the belly mats don’t stick the cords don’t fit inside a glass enclosure 😮
Couldn’t we do something like set up leds inside our dome that run off of the dome being plugged in, but then use the socket to run a CHE?
I'm obviously not in the lighting Indy industry so this might be stupid but here goes 2 ideas. 1 a new invention a heat emitter with a warm colored LED array around the heat emitter so that it's a single providing both light and heat mimicking what we had as an incandescent heat bulb. Two a simpler design of two existing products. A warm colored LED generating light to trigger the automatic regulation of the animal paired in a straight line to a heat pad under a basket surface like a stone.
Either of these using LED products less energy while still providing folded lighting mimicking the sun as well as heat
Probably the most realistic option for the foreseeable future is a ceramic heat emitter with LED lights around it personally though I think department of energy will allow reptile bulbs to continue to be made they serve a higher purpose than simply producing light
They definitely need to make exceptions for animal keeping. As for types of lights ZooMed could make, would it be possible to make a heat projector that also had full spectrum natural light color LEDs on it? Not crazy bright, but enough to get the reptiles to know "heat this way?"
There needs to be an exemption for animal care. As someone stated, what are farmers going to do that raise poultry?
Same in the UK but it's a term called special use where they will still continue to make a sell light for food services animal care ect no need to panic
I use deep heat projectors and ceramic heat emitters. From my observation, the first generates less heat for the same amount of watts as the second, but doesn't dry up the air as much as the second one does. As they aren't supposed to produce light anyway, I doubt they would even be considered for the ban. I use UVA/UVB lamps for light since I also grow plants in their enclosure and both benefit. UVA/UVB LEDs are becoming more popular so soon they'll become more affordable and they won't use up as much electricity anymore, which is pretty neat. When I did use halogen lamps, I would buy from pet reptile brands because those were better built for the purpose of reptile keeping. A bit more expensive, but I thought it was worth it for the higher quality. I switched to lightless heat when I decided to add 6%UVB lights. Aesthetically speaking, I like the long bulbs of the UVB because they emit light more evenly, and the plants and my snakes look much brighter in color with the higher lumens. The reptile community overall are very creative and resourceful folks, so we'll be fine. I do thank you for the heads up. It's good to know what we need to prepare for before it starts to affect us. ❤ Take care, y'all.
Man, I’ve spent all day building enclosures and this is the first video I see on RUclips 😭
I am ready. I've been ready. It's been a thing for multiple years where I live
From my understanding they won’t stop making the reptile basking bulbs yet.. but in the future for sure possible this is just a stepping stone
I'm like you Kevin, I only recently noticed this at Walmart, up our neck of the woods 😅
Thank you so much for sharing. It seems very concerning to me because I do own reptiles.
You can still buy overseas still . Don't start clearing the shelves yet.
A heat emitter with a heat resistant attachment that attaches to the reflector with alternating uva and uvb leds? The only issue would be keeping thr leds from over heating
there needs to be a simple exception for specialty bulbs. period. end of story. This is a great example of government overreach that ignores the needs of consumers and our animals. We will have to use radiant heat panels or CHE along with led lights so it won't reduce energy usage at all.
I have my snake already in an area that has regular sunlight access, I kinda attribute her great growth and health to that, along with a CHE. I'm really concerned for all of us in this community, I hope there can be an easy way to fix this.
Hey Kevin, i know this is off topic but I just want to say I really like the shift in overall video feel. I absolutely love your bubblegum videos because it feels personal, I’ve liked most of the highly edited videos while Donny was editing as well but I just want to say that Andy and the way he’s helping you with your videos to me feels like a shift in a better direction. If I had to quantify it, Andy is to you and your channel like Jay Tomsky was to Brian and his channel. Either way I hope you keep up the bubblegum videos but from an outside perspective, Andy is a great addition to the message you’re trying to convey as well as the image you’re showing the world.
I use heat emitters with dimmers. Led lights for my plants in my vivs.
Yeah can you use high pressure sodium bulbs does put a lot of heat from experience growing stuff and then can you use a Mercury bulb or something for the UV
I think that a combination of a heat emitter and LED lights would work, as long as the light and the heat are in roughly the same spot.
Is this for Canada too? ❤
EU area phased out of incandescent lights between 2008-2012. However infrared heatlamps for animal keeping are still allowed. As far as I am aware reptile keepers here in EU area have been able to adjust to the situation, why wouldn't you?
Just bulbs that dont meet a specific light requirement for power output. Screw on uvb bulbs (trash anyway), basking lights from zoo med (also trash bulbs). Arcadia halogen and other good lights arent affected. I work at a pet store and got a list of the bulbs being discontinued. And they were already not bulbs id use to begin with due to better options.
Would you be willing to provide a document of the bill in question banning the lights?
TippingScales has the document listed in the description of his video which is discussing this very topic
The food service industry will also be affected by this. Now I’m wondering what other industries will be negatively impacted?
Kevin. What if someone was to design a lamp that is a heat emitter but also has a UVB option. Imaging a heat emitter with a UVB ring around the outer edge so the reptile sees the light and then goes to the heat and basks like usual. 🤔
Technically the bulbs are not banned. What really happened is starting in 2007 the DOE wanted to make bulbs more efficient. If incandescent bulbs can be made to meet that efficiency rating, they can remain. I am sure one of the big companies have already been working on it, and have some ideas.
This is a really bad thing if put into full swing sooner than later. I'm up in Canada and work at a large pet store, and we're also worried about how to approach this if it does go through.
I will say though, this might be the kickstart we need for better quality basking options for reptiles. As much as I use Exoterra and Zoomed, I am more often than not disappointed in their products when it comes to heating elements, and the longevity and safety of said products.
What about the ceramic ones
My usual go to for heating is deep heat projectors, will these be at risk?
If not, this would be al alternative and using LEAPS uvb/led for lighting
Our US government has gotten so damn big and disgusting. Why create a law to do something that is already being done? Most people have already moved on to cheaper (over time and "in the long run") and more efficient light sources (light bulbs, etc) for their homes. Why create a law that is so damn restrictive and now effects an entire industry and hobby that millions of law abiding US citizens are involved in? Instead of trying to make positive changes to our criminal justice system... No, I am not refereeing to the nonsense that so many prosecutors are choosing to ignore laws and allow criminals to continue with their criminal actions. How about spending time and resources on fixing or making positive changes to our US public school systems? How about spending time and resources in figuring out ways to spend LESS money? This reminds me of a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development hearing I watched a short while back about how individuals wanted to changed the regulations on how many gallons a washer machine (used to clean clothes at home) uses per cycle. Senator John Kennedy "crushed" the witness in stating that the industry was already operating far below the mandatory gallon per cycle limit and that there was no damn need to further regulate this industry. I have come to truly despise what is now the US Democratic political party. I never liked, nor trusted the US Republican political party either, but... What has been going on in the last two decades is alarming. I went from being concerned, to nervous and now there are days where I am actually scared of our future. We live in an age of human kind where information has never been so readily available and yet so many people have allowed themselves to become so easily manipulated. So few people seem to have rational thought and can keep their damn emotions in check. Too many people see pictures of starving puppies and immediately believe whatever organization that is showing them these images is worth supporting. I do a bit of research and find out that this organization is an animal rights group and frankly does not want anyone to even own a domesticated pet dog. These are animals that have been domesticated for hundreds of years and most likely would not survive unless humans took care of them. People see pictures of starving or injured children and just assume that what they are seeing explains what is going on in other areas of the world that they have no knowledge of, nor have ever been to. When I watch any documentary or presentation I first question what I am subjecting myself to. I try to figure out how bias the creators are and think of things that may have been "left out" on purpose. I always think of these kinds of things. I have always been skeptical. ALWAYS! In this day in age, that is what everyone should be. The only hope that I see is that nearly every young adult (16 to 21 years old or so) no longer believes nearly anything they are subjected to. It seems that this upcoming generation of adults have only known of all this nonsense and madness that they have created a form of "immunity" to it all. At least that is what I hope and what I have seen. Oh and I believe that this new law/regulation regarding light bulbs that is being talked about in this video is being strongly supported by the animal rights groups. That is how these or many other organizations work. If they cannot get their way using "straight forward" methods, they turn to these kinds of tactics. Luckily there are other organizations out there to combat them. Most of these organizations only exist to make money and give individuals an income. Most really do not seem to care about their so called "cause". *sigh*
Just a thought, When I am in the UK, where I was born and raised, I suffer from SAD, seasonal affective disorder, Lack of light. These bulbs imitate UVA, and UVB, Now I live in Tropical Australia, Allowing me to project light not too dissimilar from the sun, But they are not cheap, Best buy in a Shipping container full of the bulbs you use from China, (Yes I am pissed too) Bloody Australia have made vaping illegal so people that want to quit smoking are now required to have a prescription. I hope this helps, Cheers lovely people.
Thing is with ceramic heat, i dont believe it creates a basking spot as it just help regulate the air temp?
