  • This video from The Potomac Bead Company demonstrates the final technique in the Czech glass bead making process. After beads have been pressed, tumbled, faceted, and fire polished, sometimes they are also coated with different coatings to create unique colors. This video shows that process! This is actually the process for the luster coatings, picasso coatings, travertine coatings etc., however, anything with the metallic half finishes are done with a vacuum coating process, and we do not have video of that.

    I'll certainly think twice before complaining about the price of beads again.

    I am so surprised by how much of this process is done by hand, and in small batches! Great series of videos.

      Thanks Diane. Yes the entire Czech manufacturing process is EXTREMELY labor intensive. There are many more steps through the entire process than most people realize.

    I collect vintage jewellery and my favourites are the long glass beaded necklaces of the 20s/30s. After much research I found the beads on those necklaces were predominantly Czech glass. I was totally blown away! After 100 years, still stunningly beautiful. I can safely say that it's 100% solely down to Czech glass beads that I make jewellery now, my jewellery is 90% Czech glass. It truly is incredible, the finishes and the facets, so beautiful.

    Just found this series of videos and have LOVED them! My nephew is a glass blowing artist and so I'm a little familiar with that process from talking with him. Now I have much more appreciation for the Czech processes! So beautiful and they must also have a passion for the beads they make to put so much work into them! Have always loved Czech glass but it's just cool to have seen a little more of the process! Thank you so much and also the company you work with for allowing the filming!

    Wow! So are the beads coated and cured and then they wash the coating off and it just stays in the cracks?

    When will you be doing a video on the vacuum coating process

  • @beloved339

    Very interesting, thanks. Are the coatings permanent or do they come off?

    • @Potomacbeadco
      @Potomacbeadco  4 месяца назад

      The durability of different vacuum coatings tend to vary. Most are very durable and stand up to extensive wear and environmental factors but a few others aren't quite as durable. Crystal capri gold and crystal amber tend to be some of the least durable and rub off more easily than others.

    Thank you for sharing this series...very interesting to see the process. I am interested in the seed beads... are they similar...pressed or do they use a different process for those? Makes me really appreciate my beads!

      +Carla H seed beads are done differently through an extrusion process, with a few exceptions like Matubo beads, which are pressed:

      +Potomac Bead Company Thanks! It would be awesome to see this sometime if you ever get an opportunity to make a video. This was so amazing to see! You were very wonderful to allow the process to be photographed for all us bead lovers! It is hard for me to imagine making the tiny seed beads! Much gratitude to you.
