Congrats on all the progress. Two very nutritional and delicious vegetable sources you might consider, that require no labor, no prepping, no maintenance, and are self perpetuating every year, is to put water cress in the swamp/spring and asparagus around the perimeter edge of the swamp, just let them do their thing and enjoy the continuous harvest.

Have you considered the virtues of winter rye planted into a rough tilling of the top two inches of "soil"? I used this techniquie in Salisbury's clay and it saved a ton of back breaking work. the rye will develop roots 7-8" down even by May if planted now. Then you can put the chickens on it. The soil will be transformed.

Yes, you are farmsteading! You are doing more than suburban gardening. In the 70s, the whole point of my homesteading project was to have control over my food and environment. We raised pigs, meat chickens, turkies, ducks, geese, rabbits.and horses. It was an organic venture and mostly self-sustaining. We were fortunate to have Erwon to bulk order from. There should be such companies that would deliver to your area. We held a monthly pot luck dinner/ lecture and co-op catalog food order meeting. Had volunteers to break up the order when it arrived. A true organic community co-op to add staples to the foods you grow.

Lichens are not an indication of poor health in a tree. They are a self sufficient organism that combines algae and fungi. Not a parasite. Just using the trees as a place to sit and grow. Usually their presence does indicate that your air is pretty clean. They don't like smog and other air pollutants. Having lichens on your property should make you smile!Happy new year!

Great video content! Here in my urban garden my best friend and I collected and spread out tons of bagged oak leaves. Where I live is a lot of sand, like what's on the beach, only loaded with black dust. Nothing likes to grow in that except weeds. Now I have beautiful black soil full of big, fat Earth worms. I have also trucked in loads and loads of compost in addition to what my chickens and rabbits produce. Y'all are doing a great job. The lichen is a sign of good clean air. You should prune off any dead, diseased or damaged wood now, before the new buds break open. Take off no more than 25% of the tree in one year. Try to keep the centre open for easier harvesting. Remove any downward growing shoots. Great work today folks.🥰

We do not disturb the soil anymore, did that for many years and the result was always weeds and grass. Now we roll out old round bales of hay on top of the area we are working, along with leaves and our compost and chicken manure, I would never go back to disturbing the soil. We get the round bales and let them sit outside for a year and always prepare our beds in the fall. You guys are hard working and have great videos:)

Amazing how much you have achieved in such a short time, I know heavy clay soil is hard to work but when you add humas it turns into the best soil, just keep adding compost lots and lots of compost, it's great that you already have swalls to plant in and you know where the water runs. Happy gardening to come.

We also have very heavy clay soil. We found that building soil was FAR more effective on TOP of that, rather than trying to till in, and amend what we found to be rather poorly producing natural soil. We did this by starting with raised beds, and continuing to compost compost compost. This has been a slow process, over the course of a few years, but we're now getting that excess that we beg friends and family to take from us so that it doesn't end up as chicken feed or in the compost just as otherwise wasted food. We're now using our own blend of compost and river sand to grow in, and it holds a good ph and nutrient content all by it's self. It also saved this old man from a TON of back breaking labor. To get us a mass of material to start with, we raked out the woods, cut underbrush, and cleared out to park like quality our surrounding area, which had the second benefit of reducing the number of pests, both insect and rodent which adversely affected our gardens. Good luck in your endeavors, and I look forward to watching your progress.

Hi fellow ex-California people! Your land is very useful. What nice terraces/swales were already there! With time you will have all the garden beds so easy to plant you won't need the broadfork. Take it from someone who couldn't get one in her suitcase! Mulch, chickens and a couple years will turn even exhausted tropical soil into productive garden beds. Even better, you have actual temperate climate farmland. Maybe I went too far, but I had already invested in a small town in Mexico. So tropical it is! Bigger learning curve, but working out.

@@horsemumbler1 I don't think it's only mine. Over time, words, phrases, their meanings will evolve, change. I have known many a farmer who was NOT a large commercial farmer like they have out west. Whether it be dairy cattle, beef cattle, or crops. They were not huge, but they did manage to make a living at it. When I say "farmer" I am not talking about the HUGE commercial "farms" that are seen out west that are owned by corporations and pretty much destroy the land.

I must comment. I watched the video through. You were working your butt off tilling the soil for hours. I thought a lot about the effort you expended and the eventual return you will receive. I reflected upon my efforts at my job and realized that my sweat-equity was being exploited. Although you are only tilling dirt, you are benefiting you and your family directly. Off-grid has a certain true value to it. That autonomy means that there is no other party leeching your equity through taxation or other incurred fees.

Once you have prepared your soil why don’t you cover the soil with wood chips? It really works and will save you a lot of work in the future. As the chips break down it feeds the soil with nutrients etc. and solves your weed problem. Just layer it nice and thick. It will also keep in moisture in the summer and keep the soil warm in the winter. It also solves a lot of mud problems.

An experiment next time try putting the pigs on to the virgin land first before going over it with the fork. Pigs are nature’s cultivators.

It certainly is going to be an exciting spring/summer and watch what is going to happen with the garden. I love your new way of exercising with the broad fork. Never seen a broad fork like that before. Enjoy your day. Till the next time.

The lichen indicates a problem with the trees. Since they were already there, and the previous owners were not taking great care of the place, my first guess would be lack of nutrients. I have not watched every episode so I don’t know if you have had the soil tested. If you haven’t, you should. Most states have an extension office where you can get it done for a small fee. The trees probably need soil amended and PH changed to be able to take advantage of nutrients in the soil. We are in Virginia and need to add lime to our trees. Lots of lime. Wood ash will also help. But definitely get the soil checked so you understand how much you need. Also, keep the grass around the base of the tree pulled back and perhaps put compost around it for a foot so the grass doesn’t grow there and compete with the tree.

I think yous are doing amazing for 6 months in ! Sure yous came with some knowledge but yous have put a lot of work in. Yous pulled up basically with a truck full of shit.....you have a home in the works, pigs, chickens, land cleared, soaping back up and running, you've run lines, planted trees, went on trips, helped with other farms.
Yous are leveling up all the time.......take 10 to acknowledge !
    Much love from Canada

Great job! I love your vision and plans for your homestead. I also love that your beautiful sons have adapted so well to the lifestyle. They are so comfortable going without shoes without any care therefore grounding them to the energy of the earth. I am learning so much from you. Thank you for sharing your journey.

I’m not a big fan of tilling with tractors but it would have been nice to get the first start turned with a ton of manure then maintained it with broad forking etc.but you did good!

What an excellent garden plan layout! The hill is a prefect slope with prefect swells as if it were meant for a Permaculture Farm. I'm sure with a little love, pruning, and compost those apple trees will return

Here in NZ farming is strictly considered a business. People here who grow food on land more than a few acres are considered to have a lifestyle block. Describe yourself any way you want and keep enjoying the awesome work you are doing 💚🌻.

Love your channel. Love what your doing. That red dirt (clay) yeah we have it here in VA too. Plans are awesome for what you want to do. You may not have been on your property for long but considering how it was when you first got there it looks amazing. Homesteading and farming can be the same, but it's whatever your definition of either one is as to what you call it. Love the comments being back on. I hope you have a great evening.

@@lorriescott2443 Good Morning, I grew up in Franklin county, went to Callaway Elem. , and graduated from the high school. That was many many moons ago. I still have family there, but I don't go to see them. I live in Bedford now.
