Nice tree Sam! I am unfamiliar with the species. Never seen anything like it around here. Native trees seem to be the best ones no matter where you live. We do have Brim though.

You are right there mate. Whatever tte country the trees seem better if they are native 😁😁

Hi Sam. Question; is it true that the red gums don't like root pruning? I have three InDividual ones growing as bonsai, I've let them grow really tall to get some trunk thickening but they now need lopping and and repotting. I did shorten them once but I didn't touch the roots. I've never done redgums before and have grown these from seed two years ago. They currently stand at a whippy metre tall. Any advice is greatly appreciated. And you are so right about the branches self pruning!. Cheers

Hi Mandie. I dont think they mind a root prune at all. They are quite good in that respect. Also in summer I put mine in a tub of water for days at a time. They back bud well also 😁😁

I have most of my trees,in water dishes over summer, can't afford to lose them! Too much effort put into them for that

Have you ever tried partial defoliation for this tree? You just cut the leaves in half, so the interior gets more light and it encourages new and finer growth, just without the risk that a full defoliation brings with. Love to see your Australian natives by the way. Have you already constructed the shade for your Bonsai area? Greeting from Germany!

Hi mate. Love your thinking about cutting the leaves. The thing is with these ones they are getting good light into the inner leaves but still they choose to die back. Some people are doing full defoliation on Aus natives already 😁😁

U could grow them like willow and put a pot of water under the tree pot so the roots grow down into the water.

Hi mate the that is what I do in the hottest weeks. Works well. They do not like to stay in water though. So finding a happy balance is the goal 😁😁

    Hey mate,
I've just bought some River Red Gum seeds online.
I'll be chucking in fridge moist with moss for a few weeks first for stratification, then in seedling raising mix in mini greenhouse.
I'm wondering when you believe to be a good time to sow? I'm in Sydney west suburbs.
Also if you think my planned germination method will work in your opinion.
Nice Red Gum by the way and good that you include family mate.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

Hi mate. Yeh give the stratification method a go mate. Does help. I have a feeling that they will grow however you plant them.
Let me know how they go
