Awesome, didn't expect two of my most favorite teachers to make a podcast together so this was a nice surprise! The "Suffering = Pain * Resistance" formula changed my life when I heard about it, it's embedded deep in my consciousness and I draw strength and motivation from it every day.
YEEEEEEEES. at min 50, he is speaking about "non duality", the actual and only authentic "spirituality" there is, of which one can discover the nature of the Self, and thus existence, the universe and all of that.." good stuff". Brilliant man.
This was great! I had no idea Shinzen was almost 80 years old. His ability to articulate the nuances of mindfulness in a coherent fashion was amazing. And thanks, Aubrey, for being present and letting him do his thing. So many podcast hosts talk over their guests. Much love for both of you.
Aubrey, if you see this. You need to have a discussion with Shinny ol' boy ♡♡♡♡ about the progess of insight. Meditation and psychs are great, of course, but almost no one knows about or talks about "awakening". Like real awakening, no the classic peak experience where someone feels "awakened" after. Something that takes several hours to change their brain physically, permanently. They call it "kensho" in Zen, or stream entry in the oldest form of Buddhism. :) ♡♡♡
More of a side note: re. the blood drawing example: we all have different pain sensitivities (in a large part due to genetics). So for some people (me included) getting blood drawn is indeed acutely painful (even if it lasts a few seconds). Anyway, thank you for the great interview!
I did it in horse stance instead of sitting. Wanted to amp up the body resistance to pain by applying concentration clarity and equanimity to the stance itself. Started at 5 minutes and by the time I got to 30 minutes something wierd happened. 2 hours in the blink of an eye and no pain. Little to no reactivity to touch sight sound. Kensho. As for big e that’s the non ado. The more you put into it the more comes out of it. It is inexhaustible.
Nice! And now we must have Shinzen on JRE as well
