- Here is a quick how to video showing the replacement of a thermostat on a 2012 ford f 150 with the 5.0 liter V8. parts numbers used are shown in the video. Process should be similar for many other vehicles.
Same issue, a shop put a "Motorad" TS in my truck after a waterpump replacement...such a headache. I put an OEM TS in my truck and alls perfect. Many thanks!!
Good job on that one. Just gonna talk a little about that Peak coolant you put in there. I'm an old Ford tech, worked in a dealership in Southern Ontario for many many years. Obviously, when I was there, I bought all my stuff there, because of employee discounts and convenience. But I've been retired now for a number of years, so I get what I consider to be good quality combined with good price at local jobbers. I drive a 2013 F150 5.0L Yote, with 230,000 kms. I see no problem at all with using aftermarket fluids, as long as they meet the proper specs. I just did some cooling system work to mine over the last week, (thats what prompted me onto you video here), and I always top up with the Prestone 'mix with all colours' stuff. It comes on sale locally here quite often, and it has the specs. Ford seems to think that they need to constantly be changing the formulation of their coolant. The newest stuff out from Ford right now (Jan 2022) is designated as 'POAT'. If I look on the back of the bottle of Prestone I have here, it says that it meets POAT specs and can be mixed with it. Your peak bottle probably says 'OAT' on it, because this video is a year and a half old. OAT is what was out before POAT. As you know, your coolant is working just fine in your truck. I don't worry about this stuff too much. As long as you have a good 'clean strong mixture' to raise the boiling temp, and to lower the freezing temp, all is good.
Great video! For the record you don’t have to remove the cold air intake. I was able to do it in 15 mins just by taking those bolts off !
Takes five seconds to move it
Replaced the generic unmarked stat previous owner had installed a yr ago on my 2014 XLT 4x4 at Dobbs Tire with an OEM 190' , wasn't to hard, uses 5/16 bolts. Solved the fan problem and heat gauge settles right at about 7o'clock and stays there now. And the heat is also normal now, was way to hot before. I did have to disconnect the MAS sensor wire so I didn't f it up to get the hose clamp loose, just slide the red clip out. Drained gallon and 1/2 of coolant out, didn't lose a drop taking hose off. Anyone doing this get a o-ring also. Best video on this procedure I've found.
Thanks for the video. I was trying to get an idea of what gaskets I should replace when I replace the thermostat.
ONLY USE MOTORCRAFT THERMOSTAT. Aftermarket versions cause the fans to run on high frequently. Very annoying.
I learned that the hard way. Finally put a motorcraft in and fan is so much quieter. took over a month to get the thing shipped to me with all the supply chain issues
Same thing happened to me
Did you have to drain any coolant prior to starting my this?
Was doing this i ended up putting a new thermostat housing because of a broken bolt. I also dont use the Orange coolant
I replaced my thermostat because it overhead and I replaced it with the same Motorcraft from dealer....it runs after about 30 minutes it over heats I don't think the thermostat is doing it job, in your video shows you using an aftermarket one ...going to try that next ...
When you mix coolant it builds sludge doesn’t it 😅
Yes. Definitely want to stick with the same type
Do you recommend changing the thermostat when doing a coolant flush-refill since they tend to go bad with time?
It's not a bad idea.
So there's no gasket? Or is the o-ring the "gasket". Dobbs put an aftermarket Thermostat in for previous owner, now fans hit hi-speed after going 60 for 5minutes. Just ordered Motorcraft thermostat and new o- ring.
Hello there... I was wondering if u knw where the coolant sensor is located on 2013 ford f150 5.0
I don't have my truck with me for a few days, but I found a video on RUclips from "Jason's design shop" that looks like it shows where it is and how to replace. Best of luck to you.
Did you have any issues with the fans continuously running on high?
Mine doesn't constantly run on high, but it is very loud when it does run on high. Has been that way since the first water pump went bad.
@@daveaffolter9697 do you remember the mileage your water pump went bad at?
@@samwell707 it was around 125k then again around 225k.
Since I changed from orange to universal fluid my fan runs like a jet engine. Sounds awesome just like I was a pilot in top gun. Forget those motorcraft fools they only designed the thing.
Having same issue water pump replaced now fan always runs and sometime very high speed, were you guys able to find a fix?
Thank you for the information
Don’t have to bleed air out? I own a 2011 F150 with the 5.0 as well. Does it bleed itself?
I haven't had any issues. I do recommend using a OEM thermostat though. For some reason my fan ran on high alot with this one. I switched it out with OEM and the fan doesn't run near as loud now. Was very odd
@@daveaffolter9697 yeah I watched another video on it. Seems like it self bleeds through the radiator overflow container you fill at. But I’ll keep that in mind. OEM copy
That is true you don’t have to use the orange its trash anyways the best thing to do is if you change is to flush it then you can basically use whatever you want and they’ve updated it now to where the 2011 and up should use the new yellow
I get the P0128 code for thermostat and it's pinned to cold at the temp gauge. Do you think it's still the thermostat or a sensor?
Did you figure out the issue? I have the same code right now. Gonna try changing thermostat I guess
@@captcon4767 I did both the thermostat and the sensor. It's fixed now.
@@DTMtarik so you fixed and the code doesn’t show right?
@@mohammadsheerazi2684 yes its the thermostat. All good after replaced.
I've got the same code right now. Did you all get weird steering issues. Feels tight for the first 5 minutes before it warms up. Happened to appear same time as the code. Just curious if it's an oddball thing or we have a bigger problem 😬
Great video! I thought my truck was high mileage with 160,000km
I am loving this engine. Still driving it at 261,132 right now. My buddy has over 300,000 on his
@@daveaffolter9697 Pushing 600,000 km on my 2012 150/250 light duty, and the motor still running great
@@joemacintyre1961 I'm at about 185,000 miles now. Sadly will be getting rid of it once my Maverick gets built. I need those mpgs
Thanks Great video
where you have heating issues or was it just leaking?
Was leaking. Would only overheat if It leaked too much and the coolant got low
i have a f150 5.0L it takes forever for heater to start warming up in truck guage is at center still no heat help
@@belindagarcia2441 this could be your thermostat. Another cause could be the heater core needing a good flush
Make sure your water level is topped off. I just had the same heater problem 2 weeks ago and it turned out my coolant was almost a gallon low. The engine fan would run on high, heater would only work when driving, took forever to get warm air out of the vents, yet the engine never overheated. Turns out I was losing water from the thermostat housing, which lead me to this video.
Cheers
Thanks.
premix coolant. that said full strength
I mixed it ahead of time. premix costs more
DO NOT use aftermarket thermostat on this engine
Overheat!!!
I agree. In theory all thermostats with the same temps should be the same however My fan ran on High a lot with this one so I swapped it for a motorcraft later. I never had an overheating issue though, so the fan did it's job. This was done in 2020 so I had to use the thermostat I could get unfortunately. I can't remember when I swapped it again but I do remember I still had to wait over a month for it to be delivered.
Another stupid design by Ford.
