Thank you for this; Had this exact issue with my PSA upper several years ago. Would not cycle 300 AAC selous rounds when loaded from the right of center round of the magazine. Send back to PSA with pictures and description. Received upper back (with pictures crumbled and jammed into the box) and told that they were able to cycle ball ammo through it so I should be satisfied. Got ghosted after that by customer service. Haven’t bought a single product from them since, and I let everyone know about it at work when they ask about the PSA sticker on my igloo lunch box with a big red “X” though it.
I had the opportunity to work @Mercedes Benz, in SIndelfingen, Germany, in 1997. QC on fasteners was a line position, at the end of the lines I worked on.
Since ISO came out and 99% of companies use the EXACT same CAD programming dimensions for AR 15s so most issues come from assembly aka human error. I agree with you on that. I have been a licensed gunsmith for over 35 years and I see more guys bugger up that barrel nut because they are afraid of it being too loose so they torque the snapple out of it shifting the barrel over.
So glad I sold that "premium" PSA upper I had. Mk14 handguard, 14.7(I think) FN chf barrel with the pinned Geissele gas block. I think it was like 650 or so. I thought it was a pretty good deal. Then I got it and noticed that the barrel extension and upper receivers feed ramps weren't aligned. My gunsmith said it manually cycled dummy round, but my OCD wouldn't allow me to keep it. Never shot it. Plus, i started seeing shit about how dumb their armors are at PSA and based on some of the things I've seen ppl complain about, that seems to be true.
Recently got an Aero M5 upper that had the same problem. The notch for the barrel extension pin was oversized. Aero EVENTUALLY fixed their mistake. Only took three months to get a new upper…
M&P sport 1.5. Pin and fsb in line. Receiver extension clocked. All other I have barrels from CMMG, BCM, and Criterion do not have this issue. Must be a Muh just as good thing?
The good part is, PSA is a great company that will fix issues that are discovered on the consumer end of their rifles. The bad part however is that this escape the quality control process. Typically this is where their cost savings comes in to be a negative factor for the end user. However, if you get a good example of an AR from them, it's typically a rifle that will last you years if you're a common person who does not compete in competition 🤷🏻 Is it worth it to save the money on the are and take a gamble, or is it worth it to spend a few extra $100 and get the proper quality control and possibly better parts from another manufacturer?
Thanks for the video. Something to look for on uppers if I didn't use the correct tools for the job. Had a rifle that actually started to unscrew from the barrel extension before the muzzle device broke loose. Any way to re-clock the assembly so it can be assembled again or is it done for?
Had a S&W M&P 10 blow up under me because the barrel was overclocked so badly that the bolt wasn't getting full lug lock up. .308 exploding out of battery and blowing all the guts out of a gun under you is an enlightening experience S&W made it right tho
I bought a PSA upper, and everything was over torqued! To get the gas block set screw off, I had to use a manual impact wrench. When I work on things like this, I picture the brute that assembled it! How can you over torque a tiny set screw?
Just out of curiosity, how often are the feed ramps on the receiver wrong? Or is it a situation where several small errors ad up to a overall failure? Just wondering.
Some receivers (A1/A2, older A3s) only have feed ramps milled into the barrel extension. Apart from backyard gunsmiths modifying these older receivers - I've never seen it happen.

@ well he says in the video it’s never been taken apart. The muzzle device looks original, so unless the guy replaced it then put a run of the mill flash hider back on I would suspect it’s a psa qc issue. Chad has other videos showing that other psa guns have had similar issues. I don’t think Chad would miss the signs of a md being changed. Most barrel nuts have a higher torque spec than a muzzle device. Unless you’re really gorilla’ing the thing I don’t think you’re bending the extension pin.
And never "just as expensive" either. I have one and I've had no problems, although the FSB must be canted a little. I still have 17 clicks left to the right before hitting the side of the carry handle. I think each click is 1/2 MOA, so if that's the case, would I still have 8-1/4" adjustment at 100 yards? I checked the alignment with an FSB alignment rod. I'm building an A1 clone, using a Brownells 20" Phosphate CL A1 barrel. I hope the FSB isn't canted on it also. Anyone having experience with those barrels from Brownells, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks, guys!
