- This latest video travels more miles on my folding Cube eBike. Being designed more for urban use I am constantly testing its suitability for bike touring and off road reliability. its 250w motor and pedal assist set up make it 100% legal for use in the UK. i vist the Mull of Galloway and enjoy 4 days cycling, This video shows merely some extracts of these journeys. Though not a bike review I have added some comments and shared these along with some music. This piece is from an album 'Shikasta' by Afterlife and is titled 'Dust'. Its quite a number of years old and I chose it to reflect my journey. My channel is not moneterised and I hope I do not breach any copyright restriction in using it for this non profit making track.
top video thanks bob! I've had the non folding version for 2 years and have covered about 2K miles, it's been great but thinking about changing to the folding version. have you been happy with the folding mechanism? it''s a very heavy beast & was the reason I bought the non folding version but now fancy doing more touring taking trains and buses which limits the options to folding bikes. one tip re range is to upgrade the charger from the 2A to a 6A which dramatically reduces the charging time and allows charging over lunch etc! which reduces the need to carry a second battery
Mark, thanks for your comment on your own experience with the non folding version it’s much appreciated. Regarding the folding mechanism on my bike it’s worked OK to date but takes a bit of getting used to. I had to make lots of tweaks to the mechanism to get it set correctly and found it tricky getting information on how to set it up. Since then it’s been fine but I check it carefully every time I set off. I was used to the folding Brompton which has in my view a more secure folding mechanism with securing locking when actioned. The Cube folder isn’t as secure! These ebikes are all fairly heavy folding or not but it is great to be able to lock it in the back of your car which isn’t too far a lift from ground level. For me it opens up that wider touring option however I think it would be tricky managing it on trains and buses especially with luggage. As a boot of the car option though it’s great and I plan to take it down to Wales this year and tour the more northern routes available there. Good luck whatever you do, regards from Bob.
Hi Bob, I found this a very interesting vid as I’m thinking of changing my folding bike.
Can you please give me an idea as to the battery range / milage that you are getting.
Roland, thanks for your comment and question. The set up is a Bosch mid drive motor with a 500wh battery. Generally I am confident in achieving 40miles travel with the bike loaded and the battery controller set on ‘Tour’. This is in the hilly terrain of Scotland but does require some controller management. I can exceed that and achieve up to 50 miles if the weather is warm and the battery fully charged but it does require some active/ strenuous cycling on my part to limit battery strain. Most of my trips I like to cover 50 to 60 miles per day so do carry a spare battery in my rack pack and often have to change it out. My spare is from my Cube Mountain Bike with has the same Bosch drive system and the battery is interchangeable. Carrying a fully charged spare gives me options of doing 80 to 100 miles per day. I used to do such long distances many years ago but these days I like about 50 to 60 miles as my optimum. Clearly when my trips are below 40miles I use the fixed battery only but the freedom 2 batteries give is a huge advantage on trip planning. Thanks for your question, regards Bob.
@@BOBC001 Thank you Bob for the reply. For some unknown reason it's only just shown me that you had replied ??? On my estarli 20" folder, with 'management' I can get around 25-30 miles from my battery. I also carry a spare which in theory should give me around 50-60 miles. I would certainly like more. I had thought of buying a 2nd spare battery but then if I was staying away it would take hours and hours to recharge all three of them,
I do like the look of your Tern and may well 'upgrade' sometime later in 2025. Loving the Tern 'travel' vids and look forward to the next one.
Hi Bob,
I wondered if I may ask another question.
I’m thinking if maybe trying to do some short vids of my bike rides and wanted to ask what cameras and mikes you use.
Hope you don’t mind my asking.
@@rolandbrooks467 Roland sorry for taking so long to reply but it’s been a busy time recently with Christmas and New Year. I tend to use just a ‘GoPro’ camera for my footage these days. I use my old GoPro Hero 7 Black and now a Hero 10 Black as well. I bought the 10 recently when they dropped price after the latest GoPro model was released. My reason for change to the 10 was because I could then buy and use the ‘Media Mod’ enhanced audio microphone accessory. Wind noise is always an issue with cameras used for video and this accessory greatly improves the GoPro performance. Unfortunately when it’s attached the camera is no longer waterproof so that when I change to my Hero 7 when the weather is raining and very wet. I also put a sponge foam noise muffler accessory over the Hero 7 casing which helps its audio recording without compromising its water proofing. At times I take a Sony compact digital camera as well but that’s becoming less and less when cycling now. I do use it when hillwalking at times but even that is on fewer occasions and the GoPro is my ‘go-to’ camera. Regards, Bob.
@@BOBC001Hi Bob, and once again a big thank you for the reply.
I’m not looking to do such cracking videos like yours, but a dear friend who unfortunately has recently lost his sight, gifted me his Hero 8 along with a huge array of accessories.
I was just thinking that I may have a go at some short vids while out riding,
So, once again a thank you for all your help and info, I wish you a happy and safe 2025.
