I remember being a teenager in 1988, we were very poor and they were about to shut off our electric. I heard this for the first time then while standing in our driveway and just being overcome by the feelings of hope and joy this song gave me.
Almost 35 years later and it's still possibly my favorite song ever
Happy to know you're doing better, slightly jealous you were able to experience the 80s in any way
Did they shut off the electricity? Not being rude, just curious.

I heard it a couple of days ago while on my 50 mile motorcycle ride to work. I leave at 4:30 AM, so there's hardly any traffic to keep me company as I roll through the woods and farmland . At 71 and and looking at retirement on Dec.31, I'm looking at my twilight years and I tend to reflect a lot anymore. The memories are like swift flowing water going under a bridge. I really like this song and always have. It speaks to all ages.
P.S. I decided to give them another year. I know I can make it. Put one foot in front of the other and make it to lunchtime every day, and the rest of the day is downhill. 😀 I think I have 208 working days left. Thanks for all of your good wishes.
Congrats on your upcoming retirement! I sometimes wonder if I’ll make it the age and position you are in… one day at a time I guess
Take solace in a life well lived, in a road traveled long. Memories are we have in the end.
Congrats on many years of hard work. Wish you the best. Thank you for your words.

I had just graduated HS in 1988…..I worked some odd jobs, had some girlfriends, had no direction and owned a 1980 Fiat Spyder convertible (a terrible/awesome car). On those summer nights when it was warm and clear I’d play this song on my cassette as loud as I could with the top down and my mullet in a pony-tail to keep it out of my face to decompress from what I thought was stress back then….it was like a magic song that melted away all my fears, insecurities, and worries all at once as I sang along out loud….it was just me and the world at that moment, a feeling which I wish I could have kept in a bottle for when I needed it….
1988 was the year this song was released, it's been 36 years.
Amen my friend. I wish I knew what I know now back then. I graduated in 75, married in 76 and music was everything back then. Saw a LOT of bands but I will always regret not seeing W.I.R. and Queen. Was blessed to see Bowie, Cooper, oh so many bands! Music was and is everything!
Awesome backstory! I too graduated in 1988 and loved listening to this in my 1975 IH Scout II (also a terrible but incredible car lol!). Lord, I miss those days indeed!
1988 grad here. Music store employee with a mini-truck mullet. Such wonderful times.
I learned how to drive stick on a 1980 Fiat spider. It really is a terrible awesome car.

What I love personally about this song is having grown up with it and enjoying for most of my life. I've sang this song a million times, in my head, to my relationships, and my commitments. Just now, I realized, this is not only a love song, it's a family, commitment song. My dad was diagnosed with cancer, had the tumor removed, plastic surgery to repair the gapping hole... As I think about the last 6 weeks, wiping ass, cleaning bed pans and urinals of my 82 y/o dad, thinking about the cycle of life, I understand completely and believe totally in the promise, a promise, and the cycle of life. xoxo all.

I compare it to the three “Smokey and the Bandit” movies. The first one was a brilliant and fun adventure movie. The second one was a movie that was decent, but couldn’t decide if it was a comedy or an adventure movie. And the third came into existence after someone heard about the first two movies from a drunken hobo that was living in a dumpster.

I finally found the song Ive been hearing in my uncles house back when i was a kid, this is a treasure to me. ❤
Just up there with my favourites, OMD, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Alphaville, and on and on. The Eighties were the best!
I forgot this song for almost two decades till one day I listened this in a movie called Napoleon Dynamite. Tears were flowed on my cheeks. Goosebumps everywhere. Every strand of hand hair stood up crazy. I still remember that day. It was somewhere near 2005. More or less. Nostalgic. Intensely brought me to the late 80s.
😀💚
It’s bittersweet when you hear a song you haven’t heard in many years that you used to love and forgot about. Plus the memories that come with it.
I have never heard of this song until I saw the dvd of the movie. I've been in love with it ever since then, which is, what, when did the movie come out? A LONG TIME!!
Wait - there’s 2 Jennifer Connellys?
Napoleon dynamite made me love this song too💕
It's 2022 and I still love this song:)
Good music is good music
A true 80's masterpiece Bud 🎼🎵🎸..it never gets old
🤜🏻🤛🏻🇧🇷💋
For me too.
it's timeless
This is the type of song you play from a boombox while hoisting it above your head, standing in front of a girl's house.
I just heard this in the opening credits of Lisa Frankenstein! So great to hear it again! I loved this back then as well as now! 😃
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
Some bands only have one hit in them. I'm happy to share this song with you. You stay positive always
that´s soo damn true ,heard it today for the first time in my life
Yes it is and I will always love it!
There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
It's amazing how songs like this evoke a longing to go back! Memories flash through your mind...feel the feeling, a scent takes you back...brings an ache in your heart...
Try "Tell Me" from "Killing Eve" tv show.
Without a doubt
That’s the EXACT word that comes to my mind, and that I’ve used to describe this song. How uncanny.
Although it had that bittersweet feel - beautiful but meloncholic - even when it was first out, and current, as with a number of other Bittersweet songs during & from the 80’s, including “Forever Young” by Alphavlle, and “Time After Time” (Cindi Lauper), and so many other Greats.

So many great 80s songs, however, this is probably the quintessential song of the decade. Close second for me is the Cure's Just like heaven.
Man, seems like just yesterday. Tearing it up in my Datsun 280zx bumping this song my Senior year of HS. Mullet just a flowin’. What a song!
Best song ever and if anyone is still listening you’re a legend 👍👍👍
👏👏
I recommend the New Found Glory cover also, it isn't as cool, but these are big shoes to fill. What a great song
My father used to always listen to this, now I've finally encountered that one song I never knew the title to for over a decade now. The nostalgia brings me a sense of comfort.
Definitely didnt expect to see you here. Guess me and the legendary commenter had the same childhood.😆
hold on to that one. good luck
nice, welcome to rome
You're totally right 👍
Did he bounce you on his knee to this?
I think that the 80's is 1 of the best decades ever🙂🙂💜💜. I was born in '81 & even though I was so young I remember how much the times have changed so much, not to mention the best music, movies, TV shows & how simple they were. Lol, I always say that I was born in the decade.

Lara,, OMG sorry for the loss of your sister,, but your description of her and the strong words made me reflect
I remember the first time I heard this song. I was about 17 or 18. I loved 80s music growing up and still love it. At the time my parents had just got separated and I was couch surfing with my mom. We ended up living with my godmother, and I became really close with her two kids. I remember at the time I just felt so empty inside, like an outcast at school, anxiety ridden all the time. I was sitting in my 2001 Subaru outback smoking a cigarette at night- literally feeling just dead inside. Then- this song. This some came on and some part of my soul just ignited- causing a chain reaction throughout my body. This feeling of hope and joy multiplied seemingly endlessly. I instantly learned the words and listened to it again and again. This song reminds me of that time in life- where I’d just sit outside in the summer and paint even tho I was depressed- and processing so much. I don’t talk to my godmother or her two kids anymore. Me and my best friend at the time who was there through it all don’t talk anymore. But i love this song and I always will. And it will always remind me of that carefree yet challenging time in my life- where my sweet escape was old school music, getting drunk, dancing, smoking cigarettes, and making art.
I graduated from high school in 1988, and I never heard this song until Napoleon Dynamite.
