    I just learned a really neat and simple way to dry herbs that I thought I would share. You can tie them up just like you did then put them in a brown paper bag, fold the bag at the top and clip it with a clothespin, throw it in the backseat of your car for about 10 days to 2 weeks. Herbs dry perfectly also your car will smell wonderful and they'll stay protected from dust, sunshine, smells and all the other things that can make your herbs less effective, this is of course for people who don't have a great place inside that is dark and warm to dry them.

    I loved the super simple knot for the string. I've done that but never realized how much its helped me from losing any herbs as it dries until waitching this. So simple but so helpful

    Thank you for the information! Very helpful! And yes, labeling is so important-one time I heated my lunch at work, thinking it was soup, and it was salsa! So I ate it as tomato soup since that’s all I had brought. 😂 Since then I make sure to label things. Haha

    I did see one video where the person hung the herbs upside down, but before tying them together they put them into a brown paper bag and then tied the string around the bag and stems, which also helped to catch any leaves that naturally fall off.

      great thing about drying herbs is you really cant go wrong and definitly is pretty much impossible to hurt someone with dried herbs as long as not allergic. just do what she said in the video and leave them up tell there crispy. i like to hang them in my kitchen away from the stove. when there done i like to but them in my high power blendar and turn them to powder for cooking. the taste difference is amazing. but totally fine if there not blended to a super fine powedr or just cruch them real good is fine also

    Can you preserve herbs in oil? Fir example, a glass jar of olive oil, and place inside it cilantro or what not, and when you need to use it, you can take out of the glass jar and use it. Like in salads or on cooked meats!

    So a few questions first, with the herbs that you have already stored, can you put the new herbs in with the old herbs or do you have to put them in a new jar? Second, are you labeling The date on the jars? And how long do the herbs last for? And also do you need to wash the herbs first or do you just let them dry?

    I had a horrible time with basil this past year. It grew fabulous from the few tiny plants I did (I just got started this year) but they did not want to dry whatsoever. My mint dried so easily but the basil was too moist and tender and would discolor and get moldy if I put it in a bag

  • @mrsmj
    @mrsmj 2 года назад

    Okay please don’t laugh at me, I’m a beginner and I have some questions: So when harvesting the basil, oregano, rosemary, etc. we pull the whole branch? All of the branches or just some of them? How many branches should we leave on the plant? Do we pull it all the way to where it connects to the stem/root of the plant? Or just a piece/portion of the branch?

    • @LM-kv5kp
      @LM-kv5kp 2 года назад

      I clip mine with a scissors and where I clip it depends. You could probably pinch off some, like basil. If I’m not at the end of harvest, I leave about half of each plant. I don’t know what the official “rule” is for pruning but that’s what I do. 😊 If I’m doing a final harvest before winter, I cut them down with a scissors. They could be pulled out root and all but then there’d be a mess of dirt everywhere. Good luck!

    • @HomesteadingFamily
      @HomesteadingFamily  7 лет назад +6

      +Emma T. Lol - Yes at 80% humidity you do certainly need some air movement to get your herbs to dry... but even there you don't want them to stay out in air movement... it just continues to pull the oils and other active component out of the herbs to the point where they don't have much goodness left in them!

    • @floot6799
      @floot6799 6 лет назад +4

      Emma... my granny dried herbs in her kitchen, because of the humidity. They dry in a gentle way and maintain the oils in them. Oh btw, my granny used a granny knot on her herbs... no nooses needed.. :)
