- What do historians say about this viral shot from the Napoleon trailer featuring Joaquin Phoenix? Generally speaking, it would seem that such an event would be impossible, though Napoleon did fight in the Battle of the Pyramids. No wonder people were confused and the trailer was #trending

Napoleon was a history nerd. He was fascinated by the history of Egypt and brought scientists and archaeologists with him during his campaign so they could discover cool things (they did find the Rosetta stone). He would never have done such a vile thing as shooting the Pyramids.
Well im not agree..When he realized that those ancient dude were actually black African people..well ..Famous artist "Vivan Denon" drawed a picture of the Sphinx few years before Napoléon went to kemet ...go read a little (Condorcet, Champollion, Firmin, Diop)
Sick of those ignit dude..
I heard about that
His tactician abilities was mainly rooted in his love for history. He loved reading about Julius Caesar which is why he had a good eye for terrain and entrenching himself on hills to break up enemy formations

he may not have shot at the pyramids, but he did enjoy a large ice cream sundae before hitting the waterslides in San Dimas.

He fought against the ottoman/Mameluke contingent outnumber and fought from Egypt to Syria what a legend
Mameluke charge so stupid act
is it because he formed large squares?@@nikmohammadnurhakeembinmdy7173
Shooting at the pyramid is the last thing a history enthusiast like Napoleon would do. It's bcz of him we get to know a lot about these and I think obelix broke off Sphinx's nose
If there ever were an enlightened absolutist it was Napoleon Bonaparte. Anyone who knows even the slightest bit about him would know Napoleon would never have shot at the pyramids. It is a categorical falsehood.
Yea but it looks cooler so idc lmfao

Correction...the short and long answer is no.
It's not a long answer though
@spongebobsquarepants2981 Saying there is a short answer implies there is a long answer, and there certainly is a long answer. I only said no to the long answer because these historical inaccuracies don't really deserve an explanation.
The Spinx theory has been disproved because the 1737 painting by Frederic Louis shows the nose missing 61 years before the Egyptian campaign. Also, Napoleon never ordered his troops to fire on the pyramids either because there is no cannon indentations or evidence to even suggest it.
Actually the long answer is nooooooooooooooooooo.
When ever a movie shows false narratives, it ruins the movie
Correction: When a movie shows false narratives of your favorite person, it ruins YOUR perspective of the movie.
Remember, this was directed by the dude who took a lot of liberties when making Gladiator and it didn't stop it from being a classic.
When I watched another historian react to this trailer his exact words were “now did napoleon actually shoot at the pyramids? No. The battle of the pyramids actually was around 10 miles away from the actual pyramids. But having cannon fire being shot right next to the pyramids in film is so much cooler so I don’t care”

@@Medix916Is propaganda
No movie is. Period.
@@Medix916Is nothing like accurate man. Hace you ever seen Somalia? In the movie they shoot the scenes in Morocco, a country with no similarities with Somalia. And of course the Somalí militia looks nothing like the One we Saw in the movie. (The regular somaliam soldier its like 50kg).
@@mantisreturns2757 they actually put heavy research into that film as far as contracting the actual soldiers in the battle to be thier advisors, they sent the actors through a multi week ranger delta school, they interviewed multiple soldiers in the firefight that day, and even had a giant thank you letter written by the ranger group that was involved. I think 10 plus years ago one of the operators took a taxi back to the site he raided and it looked very identical to how the movie portrayed the battlefield.
The whole point is a history epic film is for it to be accurate to the history it portrays.
Not gonna lie, when I saw the trailer with the chunk of the pyramid blown off I legit LOLed. Like... Seriously?
Well if he really shot at the pyramids in real life, then why isn't a whole or visible damage in anyone of them? Also, the french occupation of Egypt wasn't the most peaceful one for the civilians but it has done 10 times more to preserve the monuments and artefacts than the previous mameluk rule.
Napoleon admired history, loved archeology, and respected other cultures, so this myth is just a myth
That cavalry charge makes me die inside.
Cavalry is supposed to be like a blunt weapon. If they are spread out like that, then they are less prone to penetrate the enemies lines and more prone to eat shit(suffer heavy casualties).
Thats why you concentrate them into a wedge 🔺️ or a line formation so they can pierce their lines more effectively.
Edit: There are other forms such as line, echelon, and column.
Line is your classic block of men and horses.
I also used triangle incorrectly, I meant (Line)
Hm, Interesting! I wasn't paying attention quite honestly, so nice observation!
I loved using the wedge in napoleon total war ahah very good at spreading in the enemy lines
Dam bro. Where were you at!? napoleon def would have been more successful with you by his side with your vast knowledge of Calvary!
@iceberggibson199
Are you coming with?🤣🤣🤣
I wasn't there because you weren't there.
It's a movie not a documentary
Yeah the Pyramids were barely visible on the horizon of that battle. But what sounds cooler "The Battle of... *insert random egyptian village here*" or "THE BATTLE OF THE PYRAMIDS"
In an alternate universe where Mel Gibson directs this film, Napolean wears tanker boots and sleeps with Cleopatra, after invading Egypt and ending the Ottoman Empire..
They won’t let Mel Gibson direct a film to ever hit theaters anymore
Mel Gibson would have probably respected Napoleon more and would have depicted him as the military genius he was.
And it's still more historically authentic than this movie
"History is a set of lies agreed upon" Napoleon Bonaparte
I'd say a mixture of truth and lies and we don't know so were gonna guess. but i don't think anyone is gonna believe Napoleon shot the pyramids. Ridley is going too big with that lie.
Dramatic effect 🤷♂️
The Guard dies but does not surrender! Long live the Emperor, long live France!
Fuck France.
No, the Battle of the Pyramids happened 17 km away from them.
No, he wasn’t short.
And
No, he was not even close to the likes of Hitler (don’t compliment Hitler).
There is also a scene where his troop shoot the ice under troops as part of some ambush however those most likely didn't happen, there was an occasion where artillery was fired on the ice that the enemy was fleeing over but that was after the battle and had limited results.
yeah im worried the movie is going to be filled with ridiculous moments like this for "dramatic effect"
The muslims destroyed the nose of the sphinx and even tried to bring down one of the pyramids and failed

There was nothing he could do
Napolean admired Ancient Egypt. The modern egyptology started with his invasion of Egypt. All first scientific texts about Ancient Egypt were written by French during Napolean's time
They didnt show his march through the alps
he did probably not, but its a cool shot in the movie, and it shows how freaky robust those piramids are, huge canonballs and barely any damage
He sighted his cannon on the sphinx
Now we need a smerf cat movie😂😂
We can only now read Egyptian hieroglyphs because of Napoleon Bonaparte as he found the the Rosetta stone.
sketches before napoleon of the sphinx show that its nose was missing in the late 1700s
There are paintings that show them fighting about 5 km away from the pyramids.
No. He respected history too much.
Wants badass war movie.... gets soap opera
Napoleon had great respect for the pyramids and spent a night alone in the King's chamber - as had Alexander the Great and Julius Ceasar : next morning he emerged visibly shaken and unusually silent.
The Muslims smacked off the nose to deface it as an idol. Method to de-idolize it.
that's not true. Napoleon didn't try to destroy the pyramids or the sphinx either. he was fascinated to no end with ancient Egypt and even founded L'institut d'Égypte and is the reason we foudn the rosetta stone.
No, Muslims didn't try to take down tge pyramids lmao. one sultan may have wanted to, but that does not represent all people that consider islam their relegion. what a stupid comment.
One day you delivered such a goood movie like Black Hawk down and the other you make a heresy like NaPoLeOn
Watched it last Thursday in the cinema. Pretty bummed. Expectations were high but the movie was made sloppy, too much skipping years/events and with lots of historical inaccuracies. Joachim's acting was great but the movie didn’t do him justice.
Napoleon Bonaparte didn't.
Joaquin Phoenix
did!
who?
THERES NOTHING WE CAN DO😔😔
A well known fact: this movie is 5% historically accurate and 95% making Napoleon boring, historically inaccurate and weird.
No the legend was he got to Egypt and shot the nose off the sphinx with a cannon. Not true
They want to make Napoleon look bad
What sources?
First hand accounts of napoleon himself and the French army for example.
Funny that godzilla minus one a movie about a giant dinosaur that shoots blue lazers is more historically accurate than Napoleon
it did look cool though, would have been a heck of a shot
Is this no or likely not true? Because leaving room open like that means you dont know for sure
Not true at all.
Not true. The battlefield was more 10-12 km away, so the bullet couldn’t reach the distance of the pyramids.
As for the nose of the sphinx, it is a Muslim guy who did it in XIV century because he could bear local people coming to revere the statue. I remember reading he was sanctioned to death after.
Key word "likely"! Not to say Muslims didn't try to destroy it.
Battle of the Pyramids -as we know- was for propaganda. It was fought on some watermelon fields
When is it free for viewing
He shoted off the nose tho
Yes he smashed the nose off the sphynx
Saladin or his son ordered his men to dismantle the pyramids but they gave up
Thank you for that info
Imagine if Mel Gibson directed this
Frankly I think Mel Gibson would have done a more better job.
Last I checked it was a movie for entertainment and not a documentary for educational purposes. People need to fucken calm down
At least Napoleon is more accurate in every other way than that Cleopatra bs lol😂
Just went to see it and that part kinda shocked me like what? 😂
Yes he did. It's posted to his tik toc
obviously, as they are not destroyed
It was the Muslims that tried to destroy the pyramids (like they try do with a lot of ancient history) not Napoleon. The fact the film showed this makes me think the film will be awful because they don’t care about history.
Nobody cares that Napoleon didn't shoot the pyramid just like nobody cares about the fact that hurricane Carter probably actually did do the murders. The films and the songs exist on their own and they are basically inspired by the real characters.
The syphinx thing i thought was for sure fake some people also said it may have been damaged in ww2 in the african theater but I'm almost certain that's false aswell?
Could be a dream sequence
Well it's not documenter movie lol
Its for effect
Well somebody shot the nose off. So who was it?
It was an Italian back in the 1700s that destroyed the pyramids and stole from the tombs. Apparently the spoils were given to Germany after his death?!
Thank you - British Authors started that awful rumor. Actually his profile was the far-opposite being a lover of the Arts, History, and Archeoology ... amongst other refined interests.
Not true..cleopatra was black😂😂😂😂

Napoleon loved ancient Egyptian history and he was a general history nerd. he would NEVER do this. Napoleon found the Rosetta Stone and founded L'institut d'Egypte.
No sadly this movie is just very historically inaccurate, he never fired at a pyramid nor did he kill all those the Austrians and Russians by drowning them in that lake, in a large scale during the battle of Austerlitz
If geezus Freaks say YES, you know answer is, NO!
bolivian army did thou , at nephilim stones
Waiting for this movie
A near masterpiece.
The Napoleon movie was basically a bad porno. More sex scenes than battles and no finding the stone.
Didn't he shoot at Greek ruins though?
Make an accurate history movie (100% impossible.):
Yeah, but then you have to ask this question, which looks more cinematic- 1. Fighting in a flat open dessert (historically accurate) 2. Shooting a huge towering pyramid while fighting a gruesome battle closely around it. Its #2 and that's why Scott did it lol
I would loved to see Guard climbing up Pyramid and shooting off it
@@jakenake3401 that would be sick

What makes you think that? Ridley Scotts history movies aber almost always inaccurate dramatisations of real evens. See Kingdom of Heaves or the Last Duel for example.

Absolutely not, Napoleon wasn't even a bad guy. I love how people romanticize people like Alexander the Great, or Julius Caesar. Both of whom killed many more people than Napoleon did, and had the same goal which was to conquer and build an Empire, Napoleon was known for being quite merciful, in treating pows very well
