I'd be cautious. Mick might be using a harmonica holder, allowing him to also play guitar. We know he's playing guitar in the other recordings. Long time since I listened to the Altham tape, if this is on there, that would mean Brian wasn't present.

Thank you for the information, and this is indeed from the same tape so I’ll of course defer to your judgement here. It’d be nice if these had Brian but they’re still quite interesting without him.

@@Famulus9 Indeed they are. Roughness aside, it shows the Stones could sound much the same without him, atleast with bluesy or rock stuff.

@@TheBrianJonesResource It’s also nice to be able to listen to early recordings of Mick playing rhythm guitar before he began playing more in the 70s. To my ear he’s not that bad here, especially since he’s also singing and playing the harmonica.

@@Famulus9 Mick was really coming in to his own by 1968 with all the tools that would see him good up to the present day. Playing guitar, harmonica and piano, writing fully completed songs on his own etc.

@@TheBrianJonesResource You’re right, and just as Mick and Keith were blossoming creatively, especially in terms of songwriting, Brian was fast beginning to decline although he did some neat stuff on Beggars. Personal issues aside, it’s understandable that Mick and Keith would assert more control over the band at the expense of Brian.

Heard these sessions but never this and good quality. Thanks.

Of course! Despite being rough recordings I think they’re quite interesting and hint at what the Stones would sound like as a quartet.

Also, can you discern if there are two guitars on this? Listening again closely I’m beginning to think there’s two. Ry Cooder perhaps?

Yes awesome quality, best I've heard it - you're the man Fam!

@@Famulus9 I don’t think Ry Cooder was at the R.G. Jones rehearsals in Morden in Feb. ‘68. As you say Brian was in Paris but not the whole time.

Sounds like there are two guitars.

I believe you may be right, especially around 2:18.

@@Famulus9 Yes 2 guitars so maybe Brian is playing rhythm as he was at the rehearsals for some of the time.

@@BigSky1 Right, I’ve made a note of it in the description and will try to upload another Surrey track with two guitars for next time.

@@Famulus9 Unless Mick is playing the other guitar as well as the harp which could be possible also. I know Mick did play guitar at these rehearsals due to Brian’s lack of commitment.

Jaggers harp playing is terrible. Brian must of giggled seeing it. Keith clearly not much of a lead player

This is just them jamming really, and Mick by this time was a great harmonica player. Little By Little, Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man, I’m a King Bee, and Honest I Do is all him.
