It was never about a competition of strength or prowess. It was about a test of leadership and wisdom. Ip Man is being tested on his ability to make the transition of power acceptable by everyone else. To defeat the Chairman in combat would mean a continual bloodbath by all who wants to challenge Ip Man via strength. To break the cookie with force would mean a display of brutality, not intelligence. To break the cookie through the Chairman's own insistence to hold the cookie illustrates the exact point. The point is the Chairman is ready to leave because his inability to visualize further from his own limits. And Ip Man must allow the Chairman to leave with dignity intact so the cookie must be broken in the hands of the Chairman. Ip Man understood the control of strength, the display of wit, the measurement of dignity and the wise consideration of all present. That's why the Chairman could leave the position so happily, knowing that it would be in good hands of Ip Man now.
The signboard at 5:28 says "republic". It suggests Yip Man would pass on Chinese martial art in a new era of political change and turmoil, which he did. He taught apprentices like Bruce Lee who brought Chinese martial art on silver screens all around the world.
For those who are curious, the two characters on the signboard behind Yip Man at 5:27 form the Chinese word for "Republic". This, combined with the upbeat music, is probably to reflect the old chairman and Yip Man's common vision of a bright future for Chinese Martial Arts in the new era (i.e. the Republic). As for literal meaning, the two characters (共和) stand for "common harmony".
I would have walked over to the plate and grabbed two and proceeded to eat them. North..munch, munch South? Munch, munch... We can have both! The plate is the world and the cookies are Kung fu. Simple test.
The beauty of the scene is that when faced with fame, fortune, ego, accolades from peers, all within a heartbeats grasp, it is THEN you must put aside your own selfish desires, to stay self-less. Self-lessness thru continued example is more powerful than any fighting style or technique. 👊🏾😎👍🏾
(Part 2 of 2) Ip realizes he cannot or should not actually or directly break the cake. His greater understanding of the situation is that a torch and legacy is being passed on to him through the grandmaster, so the same understanding is applied to the technique to break the cake: the grandmaster must break the cake or through the grandmaster or together with the grandmaster the cake can be broken. What Ip realizes is not the limitation of the grandmaster’s skill but how the cake naturally limits and restricts the grandmaster. In ideology/theory, the grandmaster is bound by the cake. Ultimately the grandmaster has to hold the cake and keep it from Ip. Ip realizes he will not go for the cake but he will go for the grandmaster. This is why on Ip’s third consideration he readies his hand past the cake and in challenge of the grandmaster. The grandmaster can defend the cake but not truly or entirely defend himself. In harmony with this and the grandmaster, engaging, Ip reaches the position where he is able to make contact with the grandmaster and transfer the energy/chi through to the cake. Technically Ip never actually/literally breaks the cake. It was the energy/chi transfer from Ip through the grandmaster that breaks the cake. Or it takes both the grandmaster and Ip together to break the cake. Through this process, Ip understands how to answer the riddle: “The world is a big place; why limit it to North and south?” the next sentence is key: “It holds you back”. (The limitation of having to hold on to the cake and defend the cake and treat the cake so specialized, the same limitation of only seeing North and South and country when ultimately it is all part of life everywhere) “To you this cake is the country; to me it is much more.” “If the Southern arts go far, what boundary is the North?” -Meaning: since the north and south are each other’s border, each is as large or small as the other. If one is large then so is the other. No matter how far one expands they will still be together as borders of each other. Ultimately: there is neither without the other. The grandmaster confirms our analysis of Ip’s understanding and answer to the question: “Well said. All my life I have been the victor; my technique has never failed me.” ** “I never thought I’d see the limits of my own vision.” -I was through those limits that Ip was able to effectively solve the riddle. The grandmaster was bound by the bread, connected to the bread, so through the grandmaster the bread could be broken. If Ip would have tried to directly break the bread itself he would have failed the riddle.
God, this is such an incredible display of being a graceful loser in a contest. Why can't more people be like this...congratulate the victor with true sincerity and heartfelt wishes for their success in the future.
The first 2 times before he even touches the cookie he already felt the cookie is being 'protected', by his 'chi' energy. Using wing chun sticky hand style he manage to distract and redict the chi.
Agreed. I think the mastery was the circular dance and pushing chi through the forearms and palm every time they touched, just enough to build up a crack. If that is true, then that was real Chi-Kung mastery. Wow.
this is one scene i would have liked to see in person, to see the entire sequence not just through the camera, it's graceful watching it through the camera.
One of the best kung fu/tai chi scenes I've ever scene! The subtlety is worth more than 100 screaming fights. The Chi and wisdom are spectacular! The videography, the movement, you can almost feel the flow of energy between the 2 men!
One of many things that attracts people to a Martial Practice is that there is "more" than what meets the eye and that one may attain is possible. The Cookie test is a beautifully scripted Masterpiece.
Yes, and I think it is one of those embellished kung-fu stories (I am a student of Yang Taichi and do love it, just I think the stories get a bit far fetched though..)
Ip: "Hello, is it cookie monster on sesame street? This old dude is offering a cookie..." cookie monster " COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE!!!!!" old man: "oh shit, I'm outta here!"
I'm a martial artist myself and I wanted to share my perspective of the scene and the message it is trying to convey. First the concepts of energy vs resistance. In order for a sparrow to fly off or even a person to jump there has to be something to resist so that energy can be acknowledges in Chinese martial arts we learn to channel and manipulate that energy rather then just force on force this is what the Cookie test is conveying. Secondly is the conflict between ideas. There used to be this feud between which is better Northern or Southern? Rather then the rigid idea of trying to be the best its better to be open. Which leads me to our current feud between MMA and Traditional Martial arts.
gawd...this is a GREAT scene! He presents the "inquisitive hand" of Wing•Chun then engages the Grandmaster in Tai•Chi while drawing him in with Ba•gua. Makes the pressure break with a Zui•Quan shoulder stike! :0
The translation is not accurate. This is a mental warfare. Thats why so many western audience dont understand this part. This is Yang style Taichi. The bird theory is like a bird need to borrow strength elsewhere to uplift itself to flight. The old man outside said IP Man need to first find a spot to borrow the strength in order to break the biscuit. This is Taichi. Using the enemy's strength to defend itself. IP Man last words on imperfection brings progress had made him win the mental warefare.
I had a feeling there was more to understand in this scene. I'm a huge fan of foreign movies but it sucks because i know i won't fully understand the message that's trying to be passed across when i watch them. There are words even in my own language that have no English equivalent to them. So i can understand why the translations aren't enough.
@keahistight birds just don't levitate off the ground, most of them especially smaller birds push off and do a little hop to help them gain lift. So yes in theory if one can pull with the same flow of force as the bird the bird can never find purchase to push off.
Juan Godinez it’s not really translated wrong, just has the classic translation problem of nuance and wording, so it doesn’t sound right to native speakers
That's because of just how different Mandarin is from English. If we were to translate it literally, which would be in some sense the most accurate, then it would be the least understandable because it would require a breadth of understanding of cultural idioms, norms and poetics to get.

When life is short and material gains perishes, only honour stand the rest of times. Our ancient teachers knew that but sadly it is now receding into history.
Ip Man was on a diet, he never wanted the cookie... but it was being forced on him. So he broke it instead, to prove a point. Still, gotta hand it to Ip Man, he was declining it with such grace.

This is IP's character - flamboyant - no wonder Bruce Lee is his student. North gongfu is no joke. The cake will be held in no force so if IP man take it, it will be given to him in full. Breaking the cake into 2 pieces by one man is no brainer. If one man just breaks it right away, the whole audience will all fall off the stairs and this movie will be a comedy ( it might not be bad I should say). So very well said. Some will look just at the "fighting", the conflict
The signboard at 5:28 says "republic". It suggests Yip Man would pass on Chinese martial art in a new era of political change and turmoil, which he did. He taught apprentices like Bruce Lee who brought Chinese martial art on silver screens all around the world.
Their intellectual and emotional prowess is sage-like.
This is just like iroh in avatar: the last airbender. "Understanding others. The other elements, and the other nations will help you become whole".
For those who are curious, the two characters on the signboard behind Yip Man at 5:27 form the Chinese word for "Republic".

Kung Fu Panda would have eaten the cake before the Grandmaster finished the first sentence.
true....panda likes burn.....
he would swallow it in one piece without breaking it
he would swallow it along with those hand holding the cookies
I would have walked over to the plate and grabbed two and proceeded to eat them.
North..munch, munch South? Munch, munch... We can have both! The plate is the world and the cookies are Kung fu. Simple test.
you got that right , hah !
I absolutely LOVE this scene. You can almost feel the chi energy!
Tony Leung is awesome, we almost never see him in action roles or Kung fu epics like this. He is a great actor, but he is also a great martial artist.
a true master never stops learning or admitting he can learn XD
Is one of unwritten laws of martial arts , the learnings curve is endless

No cake involved most times that's why 😂
They made fighting over a cookie really cool. I'm impressed.
Luckily for them it was not a chocolate chip cookie or punches would have been flying.
so IP is Po from kung fu panda???
DOVAH FARCRY Exactly! 😂
Even in old times, the cake was a lie.

Really like this scene, it's full of traditional scenery Kungfu history and discipline, absolutely spectacular. loved every minute of the film.
@crawlFace
At 05:27, the plaque over IP Man's shoulder is 共和 usu it is translated as "Republic". Literally it means 'together peacefully.'
I am so doing this for the last Oreo....
What a wonderful gallery of faces, beautifully lit, in this scene!
Ip: "Hello, is it cookie monster on sesame street? This old dude is offering a cookie..."
cookie monster " COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE!!!!!"
old man: "oh shit, I'm outta here!"
maybe that cookie cracked because it doesn't have enough moisture in it. it looks dry
Lolana Kahale hahaha that’s a good one. But sadly no, I ate this kind of cakes before, it’s not crunchy but really resilient.
