    I'm Irish stranded in Asia during the lockdown. What I really miss is Irish Creamery Butter, Sausages, Black and white pudding, West of Ireland flowery potatoes and a bag of Tayto cheese and onion crisps in Brennans bread sandwich. Also Club Milk bars and a cup of Lyons Tea with real Irish milk in it.

    I’m from Ireland but lived in Canada for two years so I have a comment to make about the service you get here in restaurants. It’s slower because we are European and dining out is an experience, not a conveyer belt. We go out to eat as an event to make a whole evening out of. I found that in North America, they try to get you in and out of the restaurant as fast as possible. Maybe because of the tipping culture in North America, more customers = more tips for the servers. But here, our servers are paid a decent wage plus tips (usually 10% per table).
    We like to sit and really relax at our meals so being rushed is considered very rude here. If your bill gets dropped to your table without you asking for it is a BIG no no! Very rude! We feel unwelcome and rushed.
    Just to explain that a little 🙂 hope you enjoyed your stay!

      America believes in cheap prices that is why restaurants can’t afford to have customers relaxing at their table.. 😁
      Eating out is very common here in America that it is considered incredibly casual, normal, and common! 😁 So we like to keep our prices cheap so people would come more often and they believe they get more customers as well. I feel very bad for the servers here in America because they are paid insane;y cheap!
      Only if they increase the prices then the servers would get higher pay and dining would be a nice night out experience in America (:

    All the fish and roast potatoes! 😋 My ex is from Ireland, so when I went there, I stayed with his father. Bless him, he was so worried that I ate too much fish, and I was depriving myself of good food. The older generations didn't like fish. Fish is what you ate when you're not supposed to eat meat for religious reasons like on Fridays. I can't eat pork, so he made sure I had smoked salmon on buttered brown bread every morning, each of my visits! 😋😭

    • @siramea
      @siramea 6 лет назад +1

      It's true. Fish used to be a luxury food in Ireland. Historically most people in Ireland were poor so unlike other places with fishing cultures (like Spain)- fish never got that popular in the national cuisine. Old habits die hard- but fish is more popular now.

    • @maryfelton7733
      @maryfelton7733 6 лет назад +12

      Sira Mea actually I think it was seen as the opposite of luxury food - meat was luxury - fish was on days that you ‘fasted & abstained’ as it was easy to get and free

    • @siramea
      @siramea 6 лет назад +3

      That does make sense. I am in no way a food historian but I was reading recently on why fish was not traditionally consumed more in Ireland, especially during the famine, considering we were an island nation. The suggestion put forward in the article that fish at the time was a luxury item, it was more profitable to sell the fish and buy cheaper food than to keep for yourself (even then Ireland exported a lot of fish), so you didn't have it that often and so it wasn't part of the usual cuisine.

    • @maryfelton7733
      @maryfelton7733 6 лет назад +2

      Sira Mea yea maybe that was part of it but I know my parents who grew up in 40s and grandparents thought of fish as a second rate option (we loved by the ocean so were able to get fish, cockles, mussels, periwinkles for free)
      Probably for many the option of selling was good?

    He says phenomenal a lot in this vid, but the food I had in Ireland WAS phenomenal!
    One of my favorite dishes is duck, and in Donegal I think it was, I got duck stuffed with apple slices--it was delicious. Duck I've had in the US can be amazing, but seems to usually be sauced, so the addition of apples was delightfully original.
    Fish and chips was great, it felt good eating it when the fishing boats were literally across the street in one small town!
    Never saw or had chips with the full breakfast, just eggs, sausage, pudding sausage, etc--oh and bacon rashers which were SO good. I can't find them in the US! I had a burger with a bacon rasher on it, and even that was 'phenomenal.'

    2016 - had oysters in Galway that had been in the bay earlier in the day. The place was recommended by the barkeep at a pub by the train station in Galway. After the oysters i and two other guys in our tour hustled back to the pub for Galway ales and live music. The Bank, in downtown Dublin, it is in an old bank and the meat, cheese bacon, buns and potatoes were all locally sourced - possibly the best burger I ever had. And in Temple Bar is a place that sells Cornish pasties and they are open late to catch the bar crowd.

    Most places don't charge a service charge (in my experience). Some do, and some only do for large groups. Tips are always optional. If you are not into the traditional foods, there are lots of choices for modern dishes. You won't go hungry. Carvery lunch is also popular, sort of traditional, especially on a Sunday (some type of roast meat, vegetables, potatoes and gravy). The beef in Ireland is also very good. 3:45- Colcannon - you're pronunciation sounds ok, I would say 'Kul-can-en'.

      Yes but it really depends on the state. Some states, especially in the south like Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia the minimum wage is lower, however, in the states with a more expensive cost of living the minimum wage is much higher. I live in California and the minimum wage is $15 or about €12.60. California is one of the more expensive states to live with higher taxes and not everyone who lives here lives by the beach. But if you do happen to live by the beach its either because your sleeping in a multi-million dollar mansion in a gated community or your sleeping underneath a bridge. Just to give you a general idea of what taxes are like here I have a job that used to pay about $16.50 an hour and I was bring home around $1100 a paycheck. Eventually the warehouse I was working at were given raises and my pay went up to $20 an hour. That put me in a higher tax bracket. Now im making $1200 every paycheck which is basically only $100 more. Rents here where I live go for about $1250 to $2000 a month. Its kinda gay.

    I would like to add that Food hygiene laws are extremely strict too, so you can be sure it’s good quality, also this is helped by the fact much of it is produced here. Also just to clarify, coffee culture here really has boomed and our coffee is stronger than that in the US, if you want the Diner style coffee ask for “filtered” which is usually cheaper otherwise you will be given european style coffee and there a big focus on “artisan” coffee and sand which shops, with all manner of wraps and salads, with usually a few veggie or vegan options to boot .Furthermore if you don’t like a pint with your meal, we love a glass of wine too, so much so that “wine O Clock” is seen as a health concern, as our media likes to constantly tell us about it. I don’t understand how we seem to be seen as living in the culinary dark ages, it really what you find in any modern european country however I use to live in the UK (not London but other “Large” cities) and travel frequently in Germanic countries and I feel like it’s much more “foodie” and experimental here especially when you compare our secondary cities to those in other countries. Even my rural town has a few decent places with all the “notion” food, to suit the most cosmopolitan of tourist yet you still will find the stuff we are famous for and if fast food is more your speed, don’t worry we have plenty of that too & often with our own Irish take on it.

      Irish meat watery?!? What are you talking about? I think juicy is the word you're looking for. Where are you getting your meat from? McDonalds? Get yourself down to a good butcher and they'll sort you out with some good Irish beef. I've been to the heart of cattle country in Brasil and Irish meat, although different from what I had in Brasil (the cows in Brasil tend to be african breeds), is every bit as good. As for Irish food sucking; again, where are you eating? Pao de queijo is amazing, but so is freshly made soda bread; and I mean freshly baked in a real bakery, not something you've picked off the shelf in Tesco. The food in Brasil was amazing, but I think you're being very narrow minded regarding Irish good. You need to find the good stuff, not cheap meat and bread you're picking up in supermarkets. Get out there and enjoy what Ireland has to offer.

    • @SERGIO-cr6uy
      @SERGIO-cr6uy 5 лет назад

      @@ianmccready7238i've lived 15 years in Ireland, now I'm back in France where I'm originally from (from Portuguese descendants). If you wanna be proud of ur meal, fair play. But you're not objective at all. I've mentioned Brazil as I know for a fact that a lot of beef meat come from there. I met many Brazilian while in Ireland. If you go yo Naas (co Kildare) many work in "QK meats", then there is Gort (co Gslway) it's called the little Brazil. All of them working in meat factories. It is most likely the beef you're eating is from Brazil and cut in Ireland by Brazilian people. I said that the Irish beef meet is watery and I stand by it. As the diet is composed of grass. Ireland, while being a beautiful country, is a wet country. Eating green grass has an effect on the milk and the meat. For example beef from the south of France is better (more expensive) than beef from the north of France. Why that? Simply coz of the food they eat.

    • @ianmccready7238
      @ianmccready7238 5 лет назад

      @@@SERGIO-cr6uy. I'm still not convinced. We'll have to agree to disagree. As for eating Brazilian beef in Ireland, it hasn't been imported into the EU for some time now (maybe in cans, but not as fresh meat). However, if your home country is France, I can't really argue with you when it comes to anything food related. I have been to France on several occasions and I will say that the standard of food on offer in France, especially in restaurants, is of a higher standard than what it is in Ireland. Ireland has come a long way with regards to what food it has on offer, but the standard of food in France is still considerably higher. The chief reason for that as I understand it, is simply because the French demand a much higher standard of food. So basically any food in France is going to have to be of a high quality, whether you eat at a French restaurant or an Italian one, or wherever; the French demand a high standard of food and if you can't offer that, you're not going to be serving food for very long. I hope you enjoyed your time in Ireland. France has some of the best food in the world. You're very fortunate to have it all on your door step. Enjoy every morsel of it.

    Loverly video. One clarification regarding tipping. It is now becoming more customary to give a 10% tip if you liked your service/server. By law this has to go to the staff. If service charge is already added (usually for 6 or more people), you do not need to tip. This is the tip. A the pub, you don’t have to tip the bartender, but if they have been serving you a few times it’s nice to give them €5 (or just say take one for yourself and they will add the price of a pint to you bill and take the money instead). Wait staff in the pubs usually get a €1 per serve.

    Crazy us were in Kinsale the week before Christmas. Most of the restaurants are seasonal and were closed when we were there. However the Whitehouse pub had great food. Murphy’s was awesome! Bring your own shopping bags if you go to the co-op or super value. We got that crazy Americans look when we paid 50p/bag at the cashiers. County Cork was great and we really enjoyed the “Oh Jesus!” roads. (Because that’s what you say when another car is coming at you and it’s a miracle both of you fit on the road) 30 miles point to point on a map might take you a couple of hours to drive because the roads follow streams and trace around the coastal inlets. Relax and enjoy the sights.
