Also I've heard that the beneficial bacteria can grow by themselves, is that true? I also have alot of questions but this Is it for now. Thank you!

    Wow, things were different when I had mine 40 years ago. I read through books before I got my fancy goldfish but back then they were pretty inexpensive, even at a fish store. I had hanging filters, a heater and a couple air stones. For water I had a dechlorinator plus kept a few gallon jugs sitting open for a couple days to evaporate the chlorine. I fed them a couple kinds of foods, flakes and pellets plus dried worms. My books didn't say to use test kits, those were for "other" fish. Looks like an awful lot has been learned. I want fish again soon, but not until I am confidently up to date in care requirements.

    I bought goldfish for my young daughter. She brought one from a carniuval and that did not go well. I then purchased 5 10 cent feeder fish. These are purchased as food for other fish. Treebasher fish had such a face. The others wre missing fins or others things. The first 10 cent fish passed at 11 years od. Numbers 2 and 3 went at 13 years old 4 and 5 went at 15 years old. They were so reactive for their whole life. They would splash to be fed. If I put my hand in the tank they would rub against it taking turns. So polite.

    i LOOOVE fish, especially betas and goldfish. had a quite long lived beta while i was a kid and looking back, it was a MIRACLE that fish lived that long. i was 11 and totally winging it bc no one in my family had any idea how to take care of fish. now that i have three, very inquisitive cats, a fish tank is a bit of a dream for me but i love watching and learning about how to better take care of them. maybe in the future i will keep goldies once more.

    45 years ago I had a goldfish in a standard round goldfish bowl. Changed water as needed, city tap water. Fish flakes for food. Kept it quite awhile, until my 3 yo used a bar of soap, to give it a proper bath. He cried as if he'd killed a puppy.
    Are goldfish no longer strong stock? All the supplies needed now make keeping simple goldfish an expensive investment. Rethinking it now. I can do a lot of other things with $300-$400...
    Thx for the thorough intro to keeping goldfish.

    Love the guide! Wish I had that when I started. Took lots of research and trial and error to get where I am now.
    Something I struggled with was finding the right filter and air pump that I could keep in my room... and I'm quite sensitive to noise... I eventually settled on the Eheim Classic 600 filter and Hygger adjustable air pump. Both are very quiet and I highly recommend them. Still looking for a good air stone. However, sponge filters are pretty quiet and agitate the surface enough so I've been using that for air lately. I think I might need to downgrade my air pump since I think it might be a bit too powerful for my current tank (had it for a larger one that I don't use anymore). Still sticking with Hygger though! There is little-to-no vibration with their pumps.

    • @dirtymoney7783
      @dirtymoney7783 8 месяцев назад +1

      Two answers:
      1. Natural ponds/wetlands have tons of plants and beneficial bacteria feeding off of them to filter the water in ways that aren't always possible in a tank or container.
      2. Garden ponds or container ponds do indeed have filtration and testing, and that's a whole rabbit-hole of its own. But also they just have way more space per fish, which dilutes wastes so less drastic maintenance is necessary. l

      no idea how the goldfish r doing today but that was a fantastic decision, goldfish get BIG and typically 20 gallons is the *minimum* recommendation per goldfish, particularly if they’re adults 😭
      Also completely relate to the big heart, I’m 23 and my goldfish I got from the carnival when I was 12 died a few days ago, I’m soo cut up about it. My family gave me so much shit about the size of his tanks and all sorts of things growing up but come to find out they were STILL too small and he likely could have lived a lot longer if I’d upgraded his tank size. Shoulda coulda woulda, ofc, but just letting you know that I relate to the big heart LOL and I’m willing to bet those fishies are still alive 😊❤

    It's been about 20 years ago but I used to have four fish tanks. My fancy goldfish tank was always my favorite. Two of my goldfish were named Hermy and Kermy and we're originally my tank starter fish. One had a long pretty tail and one didn't. Back then you used to use so many 10 cent goldfish per gallon of the tank size and let them go through the hard process of creating a biological filter bed that got get rid of the ammonia before you put in the expensive fish. It usually took a few several weeks. A lot of the feeders would die. I didn't use any heat and I had two large hanging filters on a 60 gallon tank. I used one large you sucker fish. Kermi and Hermie lived the longest, over 12 years. They were more like water dogs. I kept my tank clean by only feeding them every few days after years of having a dirty tank and cleaning it all the time.

    I honestly recommend everyone start with tropicals. Basic cichlids such as Convicts or Firemouths. Once you can keep them healthy and keep the tank balanced - then maybe switch to standard goldfish. If you can keep those alive and they do well, then try fancy goldfish. Fancy goldfish are just not a good fish to start with period. Extremely expensive imported goldfish are DEFINITELY not good to start with.

    • @lukesgoldies
      @lukesgoldies  3 года назад +12

      Yeah I think there are definitely easier types of fish to keep than fancy goldfish, but if a beginner does enough research, I think they’ll be able to keep some just fine. Putting so many types of fish through the same tank can increase the chances for a parasite problem in the future. If someone wants a goldfish, I’d honestly recommend they just go get that goldfish from the start. There are plenty of good cheap $30 options for smaller fancy goldfish.

    • @CanineGrowTime
      @CanineGrowTime 3 года назад +3

      @@lukesgoldies I KNOW many types of basic tropicals are far easier to keep because I keep them as well as fancies.
      Fish that are thriving in a system for an extended period of time are very unlikely to leave anything behind that could infect the next batch of fish. You would clean the system well and change the scape anyway ideally.
      While you are correct that a beginner who wants to start with fancy goldfish most certainly can do so, I still say that because they are not at all hardy, that they don't make good starter fish.
      Also, not all tropicals make good starters either. This is why I used two relatively small and hardy species. Discus, for example, are very fragile, tend to be expensive, and require tanks larger than many can afford/keep up with. They make for poor starter fish very similar to fancy goldfish.
      Just my opinion. To each his own and everyone can enjoy the fishkeeping hobby however they like.

      True. With me I started with a nerite snail, bettas ( I will never buy dragonscales ever again ), then endlers and amano shrimp, then pygmy corydoras until I started keeping mbuna. I've never kept central American cichlids but they are really cool and rather hardy. All these health issues are why I'm hesitant to keep fancy goldfish

      @@apss5736 I have an issue with fancy goldfish keepers who seem to try and push the agenda that these GMO inbred mutants are the same as normal fish. They aren't. Like at all. They have shorter lifespans. They're way harder to keep healthy. They have special requirements. They can get sick or get SBD or any other issue suddenly and without warning. There's a LOT of learning (years) to be a good fancy goldfish keeper and have some longevity from your fish.
      Your SOURCE of fish is also extremely important when it comes to these fish. Imports often have weird parasites and bacteria that are hard to fight. Extremely salt and med resistant strains of costia etc. Big box stores have more easy to fight issues such as ich, but the fish are tiny and often poor quality. You can't just buy from anywhere!
      Is it possible to have great success with fancy goldfish as your first type of fish? Yes. Is it probable? No.

    • @apss5736

      @@CanineGrowTime i agree. a big box store near my area has a nice fancy goldfish selection but they always have ich or other issues. another lfs has some black ranchus but all of them are tiny and blind. i like fishkeeping because it is relaxing and enjoyable. in my opinion constantly treating issues that pop up like swim bladder issues or similar can be stressful especially for a beginner

    If I wanted to retain the old water to use in my garden what would be the best “filtration” system? Would the fish be ok if I just did a full water replacement weekly?

    Luke, I live in the city and have city water with ammonium chloride, fish die if I don't add water conditioner before adding water from the python system. Maybe switch the order when you give directions for others with this problem?
